A Spectrum of Intraoperative and Postoperative Complications of Cochlear Implants: A Critical Review.

A cochlear implant is a neuroprosthetic, electrical device that is developed for the treatment of patients who have sensory hearing loss. It directly stimulates the hearing nerve by bypassing the injured or damaged sensory receptors, the hair cells. This implant is directly placed in the inner ear. It is an electronic device which is proved to be very useful in patients with sensorineural hearing loss. This implant consists of a speech processor (externally present), which takes up the sound; transforms it into digital signals, and then internal components take it to convert it into electrical

Intraoperative hemorrhage as a complication of cesarean myomectomy: analysis of risk factors.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Cesarean myomectomy is a controversial issue. It was considered relatively contraindicated for many years due to increased risk of intraoperative hemorrhage. Recent studies showed that cesarean myomectomy in some women may not be associated with increased morbidity. The aim of the study was to determine the causes and risk factors for intraoperative hemorrhage in patients subjected to cesarean myomectomy. METHODS: This retrospective study included women subjected to cesarean myomectomy, divided into the study group of 36 patients in whom intraoperative hemorrhage was registere

Intraoperative hyperkaliemia complicating hand-assisted live-donor nephrectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Live donation has become increasingly valuable as a potential source of kidneys for transplant with hand-assisted laparoscopic donation is an important method of organ procurement. An important consideration is adequate preoperative and intraoperative planning, and precautions to minimize potential risks in the donor while providing a graft with good primary function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a case of live donation in which a hand-assisted laparoscopic approach was used to facilitate kidney donation. The process was complicated by a period of profound intraoperative hype

Intraoperative antegrade irrigation in complicated left-sided colonic cancer.

Emergency one-stage surgery for acute, complicated, left-sided colonic cancer can be performed because of intraoperative antegrade irrigation of the large intestine. This procedure was performed in 17 patients: 15 patients with an obstructive, left-sided cancer and two patients with a perforated carcinoma. The age distribution ranged between 57 and 92 years. There were two postoperative septic complications: a small wound abscess and a partial abdominal wall dehiscence. One patient died because of massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding. This method permits the creation of a primary anastomosi

Usefulness of intraoperative culture swabs in laparoscopic appendectomy for complicated appendicitis.

PURPOSE: Intraabdominal abscess (IAA) is a feared complication after laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) for complicated appendicitis. Benefits of obtaining intraoperative culture swabs (ICS) still remain controversial. We aimed to determine whether ICS modify the rate and management of IAA after LA for complicated appendicitis. METHODS: A consecutive series of patients who underwent LA for complicated appendicitis from 2008 to 2018 were included. The cohort was divided into two groups: group 1 (G1), with ICS, and group 2 (G2), without ICS. Demographics, operative variables, pathogen isolation, an

Assessment of Colorectal Anastomosis with Intraoperative Colonoscopy: Its Role in Reducing Anastomotic Complications.

The use of intraoperative colonoscopy (IOC) to evaluate the integrity of newly created anastomosis has been advocated by some surgeons. However, whether direct visualization of fresh anastomosis can help reduce anastomotic problems is still unclear. This study investigates the impact of immediate endoscopic assessment of colorectal anastomosis on anastomotic problems. This is a retrospective study conducted at a single center. Among six hundred forty-nine patients who underwent stapled anastomosis for left-sided colorectal cancer, the anastomotic complications were compared between patients wh
