An in-vivo study of the safety of copper-containing intrauterine devices in 3.0 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to prospectively evaluate whether women with copper-containing intrauterine devices (Cu-IUD), currently listed as MR conditional, can safely undergo 3.0 Tesla (3 T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: 73 women, age 18-54 years old, with a Cu-IUD who were undergoing MRI for any reason were included consecutively. Pre- and post-MRI standard pelvic ultrasound examinations were completed to determine the appropriate pre- and post-MRI positioning of the Cu-IUD. Displaced IUDs were defined by IUD crossbars not in the fundal portion of the endometrial cavity,

Differential expression of microRNAs in human endometrium after implantation of an intrauterine contraceptive device containing copper.

Intrauterine devices containing copper placement will release a large amount of Cu2+ into the uterine fluid, leading to local endometrial damage and inflammation, which is considered to be one of the causes of abnormal uterine bleeding. Studies have shown that the metabolism and function of metal ions are related to the regulation of microRNA. The aims of this study were to investigate changes in endometrial microRNA levels after implantation of an intrauterine device containing copper and to preliminarily explore the signalling pathways involved in abnormal uterine bleeding. The subjects were

User characteristics, experiences and continuation rates of copper intrauterine device use in a cohort of Australian women.

BACKGROUND: Copper intrauterine device (Cu-IUD) use in Australia is low despite being a highly effective, cost effective non-hormonal contraceptive with reported 12-month continuation rates of 85% compared to 59% for oral contraception. AIMS: To describe the characteristics of Cu-IUD users in the Australian context, their experiences of side effects, continuation rates and reasons for discontinuation. METHODS: Between August 2009 and January 2012 we undertook a prospective cohort study of consecutive women presenting for Cu-IUD insertion to three family planning clinics in Queensland and New

The effects of copper contraceptive intrauterine device on the uterine blood flow: A prospective transvaginal Doppler study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the hemodynamic changes by transvaginal color Doppler sonography (CDS) in the uterine vascular bed after the insertion of a contraceptive intrauterine device (CIUD) and to investigate whether those CDS findings could predict potential side effects, such as dysmenorrhea and abnormal bleeding. METHOD: Pulsatility index (PI), resistance index, and systole/diastole ratio (S/D) were measured in the uterine artery and its myometrial branches on 28 patients before and after the insertion of copper IUD, and a correlation with dysmenorrhea and abnormal bleeding was investigated.

[Intrauterine contraception with copper-T 200 device- a retrospective analysis of 334 cases (author's transl)].

A review is given of the findings obtained in 334 women in whom a Cu-T 200 intrauterine device had been inserted at least two years previously and regular follow-up examinations were subsequently undertaken. The most frequent indications were an expressed preference for IUD on the patient's part (38.3%), poor tolerance to the "pill" (24.8%) and so-called "pill fatigue" (11.1%). Varicose veins led to IUD preference in 8.1% and thromboembolic disease in 6.-%. The failure rate - with 12 pregnancies - was 3.6%, all within 6 months of insertion of the device. Half of the pregnancies went to full te

Hysteroscopic Retrieval of Retained and Fractured Copper Intrauterine Devices: A Case Series of Three Patients and Literature Review.

This case series describes the hysteroscopic management of retained and fractured copper intrauterine devices (IUDs) in three patients treated at a tertiary gynaecology unit between January 2025 and August 2025, all presenting with missing IUD threads or a retained copper T (CuT) fragment following prior IUD use of variable duration. Patient ages ranged from 36 to 46 years; all were multiparous (P2L2 or P2L2A2), and two of the three had a history of prior caesarean section. Presentations comprised two retained isolated CuT arms following incomplete office removal (one with partial myometrial e

Effect of the timing of insertion of postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device (PPIUCD) copper T380A on expulsion rates.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device (PPIUCD) is well accepted and recommended for contraception. However, anxiety at the time of delivery may restrict the acceptance of a PPIUCD for its immediate insertion. So far there is limited evidence to conclude anything concrete on the association between the expulsion rates and the timing of insertion following a vaginal delivery. Thus, this study was undertaken to compare the expulsion rates in immediate and early insertions and their safety and complications. METHODS: This prospective comparative study was carried o

Fractured copper intrauterine device (IUD) retained in the uterine wall leading to hysterectomy: A case report.

Several types of contraception methods exist, and among these are hormonal and non-hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs). Cases have been reported of fractured IUD pieces and retention of copper fragments upon attempted removal in office. These findings suggest the importance of careful removal of an IUD by providers. A 38-year-old Caucasian woman, gravida 2, para 2, presented for a colposcopy and endometrial biopsy (EMB). She had had a copper IUD (ParaGard) placed 10 years prior. She now requested to have it removed. After completion of the colposcopy and EMB, the provider located the IUD stri

Can uterine artery Doppler parameters predict copper intrauterine device-induced side effects?

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the predictive value of uterine artery Doppler characteristics in predicting copper intrauterine device (IUD)-induced side effects such as dysmenorrhoea and menorrhagia, and worsening of dyspareunia. METHODS One hundred and twenty regularly menstruating women were enrolled in the study. All underwent transvaginal uterine artery Doppler analysis in the early follicular phase, on two occasions: before insertion of the IUD, and six months after insertion. Pre- and post-insertion resistance (RI) and pulsatility (PI) indices of the uterine arteries were measured. Doppler para

Long-term safety, efficacy, and patient acceptability of the intrauterine Copper T-380A contraceptive device.

The intrauterine device (IUD), primarily in the form of the copper IUD, is used by more than 150 million women around the world, making it the most widely used reversible method of contraception. With a remarkably low failure rate of less than 1 per 100 women in the first year of use, the Copper T-380A is in the top tier of contraceptives in terms of efficacy. Risks of utilization include perforation and an increased risk of infection in the first 20 days following insertion. Overall, the number of adverse events is low, making the Copper T-380A a very safe contraceptive method. The most commo

Transvaginal sonographic evaluation of subendometrial-myometrial contractility in women using a copper-releasing intrauterine device.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a copper-releasing intrauterine device (IUD) on myometrial contractility midway through the menstrual cycle. STUDY DESIGN: Uterine peristalsis was studied midway through the cycle with transvaginal sonography in two groups of women, a control group and women in whom a copper-releasing IUD had been inserted. RESULTS: The results showed that 12 months after insertion, no uterine motility could be detected with sonography in any of the women with an IUD, but motility did occur in all the controls. CONCLUSIONS: Subendometrial-myo

Pain response following insertion of a Gravigard (Copper-7) intrauterine contraceptive device in nulliparous women.

A total of 33 nulliparous women aged between 18 and 35 have been observed for related symptoms following insertion of an intrauterine contraceptive device. Seventy-five percent suffered some abdominal pain initially but this was reduced to 1% by the end of the week. The symptoms of cramp and backache showed a similar trend. There was no relationship between symptoms and the day of the cycle on which insertion was performed. It is concluded that careful insertion of the Copper-7 in this group of patients is well tolerated irrespective of the day of cycle on which insertion is performed. The ini

From contraception to complication: Copper-T intrauterine contraceptive device migration leading to foreign body appendicitis.

Uterine perforation is one of the serious complications associated with the use of an intrauterine contraceptive device, and its migration can lead to complications involving neighbouring organs, including the appendix. We report an unusual case of a 22-year-old Pakistani woman, who presented to the emergency department with pain in the right iliac fossa and was diagnosed as a case of foreign body appendicitis resulting from migration of an intrauterine contraceptive device and entering the lumen of the appendix. This case adds to the limited literature, with only 17 previously documented case

Elevated Risk of Bacterial Vaginosis Among Users of the Copper Intrauterine Device: A Prospective Longitudinal Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence suggests that the nonhormonal contraceptive copper intrauterine device (Cu-IUD) may increase bacterial vaginosis (BV) risk, possibly due to increased volume and duration of menses, a common side effect of Cu-IUD use. Although increases in bleeding typically resolve within 6-12 months following initiation, evaluations of the association between Cu-IUD and BV have not included more than 6 months of follow-up. METHODS: This secondary analysis of a human immunodeficiency virus type 1 prevention trial included 2585 African women ages 18-45 followed for up to 33 months.

Use of copper intrauterine device is not associated with higher bacterial vaginosis prevalence in Thai HIV-positive women.

The study assessed and compared bacterial vaginosis (BV) prevalence in Thai women in reproductive age in four study groups - group 1, HIV-positive with copper intrauterine device (Cu-IUD); group 2, HIV-positive without Cu-IUD; group 3, HIV-negative with Cu-IUD; and group 4, HIV-negative without Cu-IUD. We conducted a cross-sectional study. BV prevalence was assessed by Nugent score and Amsel criteria. Descriptive statistics was used to present baseline characteristics; kwallis rank test - to compare variables between the four groups; logistic regression - to assess factors, related to BV preva

Acceptability of randomization to levonorgestrel versus copper intrauterine device among women requesting IUD insertion for contraception.

OBJECTIVE: Assess feasibility of randomizing women to intrauterine device (IUD) type. STUDY DESIGN: Women enrolling in a 2-month study who desired an IUD for contraception were randomized 1:1 to receive a levonorgestrel-releasing 52-mg IUD (LNG-IUD) or copper T380A IUD (Cu-IUD), understanding they could switch IUD type at the end of the study. RESULTS: Randomization to IUD type was acceptable to 54/55 (98%) women who screened. All 32 enrolled participants completed follow-up. Two women exchanged their IUD (Cu-IUD to LNG-IUD), and two requested removal (one LNG-IUD, one Cu-IUD). Overall, 88%
