Prebiotic Inulin and Sodium Butyrate Attenuate Obesity-Induced Intestinal Barrier Dysfunction by Induction of Antimicrobial Peptides.

Defects in the mucosal barrier have been associated with metabolic diseases such as obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Mice fed a Western-style diet (WSD) develop obesity and are characterized by a diet-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction, bacterial endotoxin translocation and subsequent liver steatosis. To examine whether inulin or sodium butyrate could improve gut barrier dysfunction, C57BL/6 mice were fed a control diet or a WSD ± fructose supplemented with either 10% inulin or 5% sodium butyrate for 12 weeks respectively. Inulin and sodium butyrate attenuated hepatos

Inulin and fructooligosaccharide affect in vitro calcium uptake and absorption from calcium-enriched gluten-free bread.

Compromised intestinal calcium absorption affecting a deterioration of bone state is a sign of coeliac disease. Experimental calcium-fortified gluten-free bread (GFB) of improved calcium bioavailability could increase calcium content in the diets of coeliac disease patients, allowing them to obtain the amount of calcium they need for therapeutic use. Prebiotics, including inulin-type fructans (IFs) have a beneficial effect on calcium bioavailability. In the present study, the in vitro model composed of the intestinal-like Caco-2 cells and the human intestinal bacteria (Lactobacillus, Enterococ

Characteristics of selected peripheral blood parameters in polar fox (Alopex lagopus L.) fed diets with inulin.

This study aimed at investigating changes in selected peripheral blood parameters in male polar foxes fed diets with different supplementation of inulin: 0.25% (group El), 0.5% (E2) and 1% (E3). The blood for analysis was sampled from the brachial vein. The study showed that adding 0.25 and 0.5% of inulin to fox feed resulted in a lower content of haemoglobin (Hb) as well as mean mass of Hb in red blood cells in the 0.5% inulin group. The total count of thrombocytes decreased significantly with a higher level of prebiotic, while the total number of white blood cells and the percentage of diffe

An in vivo evaluation of the antifibrotic potential of inulin against bile duct ligation-induced liver fibrosis.

OBJECTIVES: Hepatic fibrosis is a major cause of liver-related mortality worldwide. This study evaluated the hepatoprotective and antifibrotic effects of inulin, a natural polysaccharide, in a rat model of cholestasis induced by bile duct ligation (BDL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats (230-250 g) were randomly divided into six groups: control, sham, inulin (200 mg/kg), BDL, and BDL+ inulin (100 and 200 mg/kg). Inulin was orally administered for 30 days after BDL. Serum liver enzyme levels, bilirubin, and lipid profiles were measured. Liver tissues were analyzed for oxidative s

Iron Fortification and Inulin Supplementation in Early Infancy: Evaluating the Impact on Gut Microbiome in a Piglet Model.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic iron fortification in infant formula effectively prevents iron deficiency anemia. However, the low absorption rate results in excess unabsorbed iron accumulates in colon, where it has been linked to harmful microbiota changes and increased diarrheal incidence. Prebiotic oligosaccharides have shown promise in mitigating these adverse effects, but the role of inulin or synbiotic supplementation with inulin-fermenting lactic acid bacteria in modulating early gut microbiome under iron fortification remains understudied. OBJECTIVES: This study used a neonatal pig model to

Effects of faecal microbiota transplantation supplemented with inulin on early immunity and immune organ histomorphology in chickens.

1. Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a technique that promotes gut microbiota diversity and abundance by transplantation of faeces into a recipient's gastrointestinal tract via multiple routes.2. Inulin, a plant polysaccharide, is a natural functional dietary fibre found in a variety of plants, including vegetables and fruits. Inulin can inhibit pathogenic bacterial growth by lowering pH, promote mineral absorption and improve intestinal barrier integrity.3. In this study 90 one-day-old chicks were randomly into three groups; control (CON) group was fed a basic diet; FMT group fed two

Development of inulin nanocarrier for effective oral delivery of insulin: synthesize, optimization, characterization, and biophysical study.

The susceptibility of insulin against gastric acid degradation presents a major challenge for oral insulin delivery. The potential of biopolymer-based nanocarriers was investigated in order to address this issue. Inulin, a biopolymer produced by the halophilic bacterium Salinivibrio sp. GM01, has been evaluated for its effectiveness as an insulin nanocarrier. Using central composite design (CCD) method, the optimum condition of inulin-encapsulated insulin (I-In) was achieved at 53 mg of inulin stirred at 17,800 rpm for 10 min, resulting in spherical I-In nanoparticles (I-In NPs) with an averag

Effect of daily co-exposure to inulin and chlorpyrifos on selected microbiota endpoints in the SHIME® model.

The intestinal microbiota has a key role in human health via the interaction with the somatic and immune cells in the digestive tract environment. Food, through matrix effect, nutrient and non-nutrient molecules, is a key regulator of microbiota diversity. As a food contaminant, the pesticide chlorpyrifos (CPF) has an effect on the composition of the intestinal microbiota and induces perturbation of microbiota. Prebiotics (and notably inulin) are known for their ability to promote an equilibrium of the microbiota that favours saccharolytic bacteria. The SHIME® dynamic in vitro model of the hum

Impact of Citrus Pulp or Inulin on Intestinal Microbiota and Metabolites, Barrier, and Immune Function of Weaned Piglets.

We investigated the use of citrus pulp (CP) as a novel prebiotic capable of exerting microbiota and immunomodulating capacities to alleviate weaning stress. Inulin (IN), a well-known prebiotic, was used for comparison. Hundred and 28 male weaned piglets of 21 days old were assigned to 32 pens of 4 piglets each. Piglets were assigned to one of the four treatments, i.e., control, IN supplemented at 0.2% (IN0.2%), and CP supplemented either at 0.2% (CP0.2%) or at 2% (CP2%). On d10-11 and d31-32 post-weaning, one pig per pen was euthanized for intestinal sampling to evaluate the growth performance

Prophylactic Potential of Synbiotic (Lactobacillus casei and Inulin) in Malnourished Murine Giardiasis: an Immunological and Ultrastructural Study.

Giardiasis is a re-emerging infectious disease with outbreaks reported globally specially in children and malnourished individuals leading to malabsorption, growth retardation, and severe diarrhea. Thus, in the present study, prophylactic administration of synbiotic as the functional food was used to assess its antigiardial potential in malnourished murine giardiasis. Interestingly, prior administration of synbiotic (Lactobacillus casei + inulin) even to malnourished-Giardia-infected mice led to increased body mass, small intestine mass, lactobacilli counts, and reduced severity of giardiasis

Mucosal Barrier and Th2 Immune Responses Are Enhanced by Dietary Inulin in Pigs Infected With Trichuris suis.

Diet composition may play a crucial role in shaping host immune responses and commensal gut microbiota populations. Bioactive dietary components, such as inulin, have been extensively studied for their bioactive properties, particularly in modulating gut immune function and reducing inflammation. It has been shown that colonization with gastrointestinal parasitic worms (helminths) may alleviate chronic inflammation through promotion of T-helper cell type (Th) 2 and T-regulatory immune responses and alterations in the gut microbiome. In this study, we investigated if dietary inulin could modula

Arabinoxylans and inulin differentially modulate the mucosal and luminal gut microbiota and mucin-degradation in humanized rats.

The endogenous gut microbiota affects the host in many ways. Prebiotics should favour beneficial intestinal microbes and thus improve host health. In this study, we investigated how a novel class of potential prebiotic long-chain arabinoxylans (LC-AX) and the well-established prebiotic inulin (IN) modulate the gut microbiota of humanized rats. Six weeks after axenic rats were inoculated with a human faecal microbiota, their colonic microbiota was similar to this inoculum (∼ 70%), whereas their caecal microbiota was enriched with Verrucomicrobia and Firmicutes concomitant with lower abundance o

Effects of inulin on performance, egg quality, gut microflora and serum and yolk cholesterol in laying hens.

1. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of inulin on laying hens. A total of 360 Brown Nick laying hens were divided randomly into 6 groups of 60 with 6 replicates of 10 hens and fed on diets containing 0 (control), 0·1, 0·5, 1·0, 1·5 or 2·0% inulin during the 4-week trial. 2. Dietary supplementation of inulin reduced cholesterol concentration (mg/g yolk) and content (mg/egg) in eggs. Cholesterol content in eggs decreased linearly with increasing levels of dietary inulin level. 3. Supplementation of inulin in diets decreased coliform bacteria counts and pH in the caecum.

Effect of dietary inulin supplementation on inflammation of pouch mucosa in patients with an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis.

PURPOSE: Inflammation is a constant finding in the ileal reservoir of patients with an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis and is associated with decreased fecal concentrations of the short chain fatty acid butyrate, increased fecal pH, changes in fecal flora, and increased concentrations of secondary bile acids. In healthy subjects, inulin, a dietary fiber, is fermented to short chain fatty acids and leads to a lower pH and potentially beneficial changes in fecal flora. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of enteral supplementation of inulin on inflammation of the ileal reserv

Effects of two fermentable carbohydrates (inulin and resistant starch) and their combination on calcium and magnesium balance in rats.

Resistant starch and inulin are complex carbohydrates that are fermented by the microflora and known to increase colonic absorption of minerals in animals. The fermentation of these substrates in the large bowel to short-chain fatty acids is the main reason for this increase in mineral absorption. The purpose of the present study was to examine the potential synergistic effect of a combination of these two fermentable carbohydrates. For this purpose, thirty-two adult male Wistar rats weighing 200 g were used in the present study. The rats were distributed into four groups, and fed for 21 d a f

Inulin-armored hesperetin‑zinc nanodrugs for synergistic redox-immune modulation and barrier repair in ulcerative colitis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory bowel disease with a rising global incidence rate, which poses a significant challenge to clinical management due to the limited efficacy and adverse reactions of current treatments. To overcome these limitations, we engineered Hes-Zn@IN, a novel core-shell nanoparticle system combining a hesperetin‑zinc (HesZn) metal-polyphenol coordination core encapsulated in an inulin (IN) polysaccharide shell. This nanotherapeutic platform exhibits synergistic therapeutic benefits: superior antioxidant capacity through metal-polyphenol coordinati
