A specific system of transport for p-aminohippurate (PAH) is demonstrated in rabbit renal basal-lateral membrane vesicles. The PAH uptake into an intravesicular space is inhibited by probenecid in concentrations above 0.2 mM. The transport is saturable and is also temperature-dependent with an optimum between 37 and 45 degrees C. Divalent cations are able to enhance the uptake 2- to 3-fold. The stimulatory effect of the divalent cations diminishes in the following order: Mg++ = Mn++, Ba++, Ca++ and Sr++. Maximum stimulation occurs between 2.5 and 5 mM Mg++. Because the mechanisms that govern mitosis are a key to the understanding of cell growth, the proteins associated with chromosomes specifically during this phase have received thorough attention. The incidence of side-effects produced by meglumine diatrizoate and meglumine-, meglumine-calcium-, and sodium-calcium-magnesium metrizoate, was compared in 800 urographies. Patients older than 60 years seem to have less side-effects than younger patients. The incidence of sensation of warmth seems to be higher in patients who have had previous urographies, compared to those who are examined for the first time. The incidence of this effect is higher for the sodium-calcium-magnesium salt of metrizoate, than for other salts of metrizoate.

Glycoprotein was isolated from a purified thymocyte membrane preparation by two methods: lithium diiodosalicylate-phenol extraction and hot 75% ethanol extraction. A higher yield of membrane sialic acid was obtained by the latter method. The preparations had similar apparent molecular weights on sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis. Both had similar receptor activities against a panel of hemagglutinins, although the 75% ethanol extract was more active on a weight basis. However, there were significant differences in carbohydrate and amino acid compositions of the two thymocyte extracts.

In a further exploration of idiosyncratic reactions to injections of contrast media, a systematic study of immediate or delayed hypersensitivity in guinea pigs injected with contrast media analogs was performed. No evidence of immediate or delayed hypersensitivity could be ascertained to either contrast media analogs alone, or analogs bound to protein carriers. This does not represent conclusive evidence against the notion of antibody formation as a factor in the production of some adverse reactions, but makes such a pathogenesis less likely.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the capacities of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) to diagnose tongue cancer.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Intravenous bolus contrast-enhanced MDCT was performed in 40 patients with tongue cancer diagnosed during complex clinical and instrumental examination. In all cases, the tumor had a structure of squamous cell carcinoma of varying grades. The results of MSCT were compared with the data of surgery and cytological and histological examinations. Tongue tumor accumulation of a contrast agent was qualitatively analyzed.

The accumulation of diatrizoate and two new low osmolality contrast agents, iopamidol and ioxaglate, was investigated in three experimental tumors (a well differentiated mammary adenocarcinoma, a poorly differentiated colon carcinoma, and a hepatoma) in the rat. All three tumors were implanted into the liver 12 to 14 days prior to intravenous injection of the contrast agents in a dose of 300 mg iodine per kg. The new nonionic contrast medium iohexol (Omnipaque) was compared with its predecessor metrizamide (Amipaque) and with the conventional ionic medium meglumine metrizoate (Isopaque Cerebral) in carotid angiography using a double-blind crossover technique. The results indicated that iohexol and metrizamide caused less discomfort than the ionic medium. The circulatory effects of the three media were generally mild, and the diagnostic effectiveness was comparable when the iodine concentration was kept in the range of 280-300 mg I/ml.

Pharmacokinetics and excretion of iohexol, a new nonionic water-soluble contrast medium, were determined after lumbar myelography. Peak plasma concentrations were obtained 2 to 6 hours after injection and ranged from 29 to 177 microgram/ml. Terminal elimination half-life was 4.0 hours, and over 90% of the dose was recovered in the urine within 24 hours. We compared the haemodynamic effects of a low osmolality contrast medium Hexabrix 320 (meglumine/sodium ioxaglate) with a high osmolality medium Urografin 370 (meglumine/sodium diatrizoate) in 32 patients. Different agents have been employed to extract the histones and other soluble components from isolated HeLa S3 nuclei during nuclear matrix isolation. Hexabrix, a low-osmolality radiographic contrast agent consisting of the meglumine and sodium salt of ioxaglic acid (600 mOsm/kg), was evaluated in 50 children undergoing cardiac catheterization in a randomized double-blind manner.
