Less indication of muscle damage in the second than initial electrical muscle stimulation bout consisting of isometric contractions of the knee extensors.

This study compared the first and second exercise bouts consisting of electrically evoked isometric contractions for muscle damage profile. Nine healthy men (31 +/- 4 years) had two electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) bouts separated by 2 weeks. The knee extensors of one leg were stimulated by biphasic rectangular pulses (75 Hz, 400 mus, on-off ratio 5-15 s) at the knee joint angle of 100 degrees (0 degrees , full extension) to induce 40 isometric contractions, while the current amplitude was increased to maintain maximal force generation. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) torque o

Evaluation of the first annular pulley stretch effect under isometric contraction of the flexor tendon in healthy volunteers and trigger finger patients using ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: Isometric exercises for a flexed finger have been reported to be effective for treating trigger finger as the flexor tendon widens the space under the first annular (A1) pulley towards the palmar destination during the exercise. This study aimed to evaluate the structural changes during the A1 pulley stretch in healthy volunteers and patients with trigger finger using ultrasonography. METHODS: We enrolled 25 male and 14 female patients (39 middle fingers). The thickness of the subcutaneous tissue (parameter a), A1 pulley (parameter b), and the flexor tendon (parameter c) and the d

Effects of Prednisone on a Patient with Dysferlinopathy Assessed by Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction: Alternate-Day Low-Dose Administration for a 17-Year Period.

Glucocorticoids are candidates for the pharmacological treatment of dysferlinopathy. Deflazacort, however, showed a worse effect on muscle strength than placebo. Alternate-day low-dose prednisone may have beneficial effects with fewer adverse effects. The outcomes for a female patient with dysferlinopathy (limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2B) were assessed by maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) using a newly devised chair and arm table with push-pull type strain gauges. Grip strength was also measured isometrically. Prednisone 15 mg was started orally at the age of 24 years and w

VisR Ultrasound for Monitoring Muscle Fatigue with FES-Induced and Volitional Isometric Contraction of the Rectus Femoris in Participants with Uninjured and Injured Spinal Cords.

PURPOSE: Hybrid exoskeletons for spinal cord injury rehabilitation combine functional electrical stimulation (FES) with robotic assistance, but muscle fatigue limits FES effectiveness. Improved fatigue measurements could improve exoskeleton control by optimizing assistance. This study evaluates Viscoelastic Response (VisR) ultrasound imaging as a method for monitoring muscle fatigue through changes in muscle stiffness. METHODS: VisR ultrasound was used to assess the rectus femoris in five unimpaired participants and three with spinal cord injury (SCI). Changes in relative elasticity (RE) from

From Populations to Programming Variables: Post-Activation Performance Enhancement Following Isometric Contractions on Muscular Strength and Power-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Isometric contraction (ISO) has emerged as a potentially effective conditioning activity (CA) for inducing post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE). However, findings regarding its effects on subsequent muscular strength and power remain inconsistent, and the participant- and protocol-related characteristics associated with more favorable responses remain unclear. This systematic-review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the acute effects of ISO on subsequent muscular strength and power, compared ISO with control (CON) and dynamic isotonic contraction (DYN) conditions, and explore chara

Sustained Isometric Wrist Flexion and Extension Maximal Voluntary Contractions Similarly Impair Hand-Tracking Accuracy in Young Adults Using a Wrist Robot.

Due to their stabilizing role, the wrist extensor muscles demonstrate an earlier onset of performance fatigability and may impair movement accuracy more than the wrist flexors. However, minimal fatigue research has been conducted at the wrist. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine how sustained isometric contractions of the wrist extensors/flexors influence hand-tracking accuracy. While gripping the handle of a three-degrees-of-freedom wrist manipulandum, 12 male participants tracked a 2:3 Lissajous curve (±32° wrist flexion/extension; ±18° radial/ulnar deviation). Assessment of arthrogenic quadriceps muscle inhibition by physical examination in the supine position during isometric contraction is feasible as demonstrated by electromyography: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Preventing severe arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) after knee injury is critical for better prognosis. The novel Sonnery-Cottet classification of AMI enables the evaluation of AMI severity but requires validation. This study aimed to investigate the electromyography (EMG) patterns of leg muscles in the examination position from the classification during isometric contraction to confirm its validity. We hypothesised that the AMI pattern, which is characterised by quadriceps inhibition and hamstring hypercontraction, would be detectable in the supine position during isometric cont

Boys vs men differences in muscular fatigue, muscle and cerebral oxygenation during maximal effort isometric contractions: the effect of muscle blood flow restriction.

PURPOSE: To examine whether the children's superiority, over adults, to resist fatigue during repeated maximal-efforts depends on their often-cited oxidative advantage, attributed to greater muscle blood flow and O2-delivery. We also investigated the mechanisms underlying child-adult differences in muscle-oxygenation (due to O2-supply or O2-utilization) and examined if there are age-differences in cerebral-oxygenation response (a brain-activation index). METHODS: Eleven men (23.3 ± 1.8yrs) and eleven boys (11.6 ± 1.1 yrs) performed 15 maximal-effort handgrips (3-s contraction/3-s rest) under

Mitochondria-targeted antioxidant supplementation does not affect muscle soreness or recovery of maximal voluntary isometric contraction force following muscle-damaging exercise in untrained men: a randomized clinical trial.

Unaccustomed exercise causes muscle damage resulting in loss of muscle function, which may be attributable to exercise-induced increases in skeletal muscle reactive oxygen species. This study examined the effect of mitochondria-targeted antioxidant supplementation on recovery of muscle function following exercise. Thirty-two untrained men received MitoQ (20 mg/day) or a placebo for 14 days before performing  300 maximal eccentric contractions of the knee extensor muscles of 1 leg. Muscle function was assessed using isokinetic dynamometry before, immediately after, and 24, 48, 72, and 168 hours

Age-related differences in strain rate tensor of the medial gastrocnemius muscle during passive plantarflexion and active isometric contraction using velocity encoded MR imaging: potential index of lateral force transmission.

PURPOSE: The strain rate (SR) tensor measures the principal directions and magnitude of the instantaneous deformation; this study aims to track age-related changes in the 2D SR tensor in the medial gastrocnemius during passive joint rotation and active isometric contraction. METHODS: SR tensors were derived from velocity encoded magnetic resonance phase-contrast images in nine young (28 years) and eight senior (78 years) women. Strain rates along and in the cross-section of the fiber were calculated from the SR tensor and used to derive the out-plane SR. Age-related and regional differences i
