Maxillary and mandibular fracture repair using a modified bis-acryl reinforced interdental wiring technique: Description of the technique and report of 11 cases.

BACKGROUND: Repair options for maxillary and mandibular fractures in horses are dictated by the proximity of dentition, fracture configuration, and implant design. Jaw fractures can be repaired by minimising tension forces via intraoral splint constructs when dentition is present on either side of the fracture line. This repair option reduces iatrogenic damage to dentition while achieving reduction and stability until appliance removal. OBJECTIVES: To first report a modified technique for jaw fracture repair in horses with cadaveric example images. Second, to report the clinical outcome of ma

Facial Cellulitis of Unusual Odontogenic Origin.

A healthy man in his 40s was referred to the Oral Surgery and Implantology Unit of Geneva University Hospital for diagnosis and management of facial swelling affecting the right side of his lower jaw. The patient's history revealed that the patient had been hit by several punches to the face a few months earlier. To investigate the swelling, an intra-oral radiograph, an orthopantomographic radiograph, and computed tomography were performed, which revealed no fracture of the lower jaw but the presence of a partly impacted fractured wisdom tooth (third molar). This finding, together with the cli

[Midfacial and mandibular fractures during the growth period].

This study investigated the occurrence of primary and secondary complications following conservative versus surgical intervention in the treatment of midface and lower jaw fractures. Follow-up studies were undertaken on 81 patients who had been admitted to the above clinic with such fractures during their adolescence. It was found that more complications developed after surgical intervention.

Mandibular bone structure, bone mineral density, and clinical variables as fracture predictors: a 15-year follow-up of female patients in a dental clinic.

OBJECTIVE: To compare three mandibular trabeculation evaluation methods, clinical variables, and osteoporosis as fracture predictors in women. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred and thirty-six female dental patients (35-94 years) answered a questionnaire in 1996 and 2011. Using intra-oral radiographs from 1996, five methods were compared as fracture predictors: (1) mandibular bone structure evaluated with a visual radiographic index, (2) bone texture, (3) size and number of intertrabecular spaces calculated with Jaw-X software, (4) fracture probability calculated with a fracture risk assessment tool (

Case Report: An Unusual Finding of a Solitary Bone Cyst in a Patient with a Fractured Mandible.

Solitary bone cysts are uncommon. They have a reported incidence of 0.6% and are commonest in the mandible. The case of a 16-year-old patient who attended Accident and Emergency with a fractured mandible and the incidental finding of a solitary bone cyst is presented. Solitary bone cysts are usually asymptomatic and generally heal fully following surgical exploration. CPD/Clinical Relevance: This case report aims to increase awareness of the general dental practitioner of solitary bone cysts as a possible finding in patients with pathological jaw fractures and radiolucencies of the jaws. Risk of Jaw Osteonecrosis After Intravenous Bisphosphonates in Cancer Patients and Patients Without Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the risk of jaw osteonecrosis after intravenous (IV) bisphosphonate administered to patients with cancer vs patients without cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of a 5% national sample of Medicare patients administered IV bisphosphonate from January 1, 2008, through December 31, 2013, for cancer vs noncancer indications. Probable jaw osteonecrosis was estimated with an algorithm including diagnoses, surgical procedures, and imaging studies. A non-IV bisphosphonate comparison group included patients prescribed an oral bisphosphonate for

Mandibular trabecular bone as fracture indicator in 80-year-old men and women.

The objective of the present study was to compare assessments of the mandibular bone as fracture risk indicators for 277 men and women. The mandibular trabecular bone was evaluated in periapical radiographs, using a visual index, as dense, mixed dense and sparse, or sparse. Bone texture was analysed using a computer-based method in which the number of transitions from trabeculae to intertrabecular spaces was calculated. The sum of the sizes and intensities of the spaces between the trabeculae was calculated using Jaw-X software. Women had a statistically significantly greater number of fractur

A short period of maxillomandibular fixation for treatment of fractures of the mandibular tooth-bearing area.

PURPOSE: This study was aimed to determine whether a short period of maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) followed by an arch bar splint wired to the lower jaw is a suitable alternative to conventional MMF for treatment of fractures of the mandibular tooth-bearing area. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with mandibular fractures associated with no other facial fractures were selected. They were randomly assigned into 2 groups for treatment with conventional MMF (group A) and MMF for a short period of 2 weeks followed by an arch bar splint wired to the lower jaw (group B). A retrospective study of head fractures in 21 horses.

The clinical features of 21 horses which sustained head fractures are reviewed. There was a higher incidence of fractures in males and Standardbred horses. Surgical treatment was practical and successful in most cases when the fractures involved the bones of the jaws and the face. Fractures which involved the cranial cavity or the cranial nerves were difficult to treat and usually held a poor prognosis.

Oromandibular dystonia: a diagnosis not to miss.

Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) is characterised by sustained or repetitive involuntary movements of the jaw, face, and tongue. People with the condition may present to their dentist, general practitioner, or a secondary care specialist with non-specific symptoms including jaw or facial pain, bruxism, subluxations or dislocations of the jaw; fractured teeth or dental restorations, or both; or jaw tremor. Many clinicians are not aware of the disorder and this can lead to delayed diagnoses, unnecessary complications, and inappropriate treatment. OMD is an important diagnosis not to miss because ref

Antiresorptive therapy in combination with radiation results in enhanced risk for necrosis and associated complicatifions.

OBJECTIVE: Patients exposed to a combination of antiresorptive medication and radiotherapy of the head and neck area developing necrosis of the jaw in the course of treatment are extremely rare. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the outcome and complications in this highly vulnerable patient cohort. STUDY DESIGN: Seventeen patients who received both antiresorptive treatment and radiotherapy (medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw/osteoradionecrosis = the [MRONJ/ORN] group) in the head and neck area were enrolled in this study. Included patients were treated in our departme

Osteonecrosis of the jaw induced by treatment with anti-PD-1 immunotherapy: a case report.

Recognizing rare but clinically significant toxicity of immunotherapy is critical. Here we describe the first detailed case of severe osteonecrosis of the jaw due to anti-PD-1. A 75-year-old man with metastatic melanoma, with no prior radiation or treatment with bone-targeting agents, experienced jaw pain 1 week after his first dose of nivolumab. Imaging studies were negative, and treatment was resumed after pain was controlled. 4 months later, the patient experienced acute exacerbation of pain and malocclusion of the jaw. Imaging showed bilateral fractures of the angle of mandible with extens

[Osteoprotective therapy with bisphosphonates or denosumab in patients with multiple myeloma: benefit and risks].

Bisphosphonates have been used during the complete treatment of multiple myeloma for more than twenty years. They slow osteolysis and thereby contribute to the improvement of quality of life. Their long-term use, however, is related to 2 serious, usually later appearing complications: osteonecrosis of the jaw, occurring in 6-9 % of patients, and rarer atypical bone fractures. Both these complications are very difficult to heal, and all the more emphasis is therefore laid on prevention. This first of all includes discussion about the risk with the patient, followed by a dental checkup before th

Impact of Drug Safety Warnings and Cost-Sharing Policies on Osteoporosis Drug Utilization in Spain: A Major Reduction But With the Persistence of Over and Underuse. Data From the ESOSVAL Cohort From 2009 to 2015.

Background: Recent studies in several countries show a significant decrease in the consumption of osteoporosis drugs from a peak around 2009, mainly attributed to bisphosphonate safety warnings issued by regulatory agencies on jaw osteonecrosis, atypical fractures, and esophageal cancer, but no studies have assessed the impact of these warnings by risk of fracture strata. Aim: The aim of this work is to assess changes in the utilization of osteoporosis drugs in the region of Valencia (Spain) after safety warnings from regulatory agencies and cost-sharing changes, according to patient socio-dem
