Mandibular condyle lesions, jaw movements, and occlusal status in 15-year-old children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

The purpose was to determine the number and severity of lesions in the temporomandibular area and their association with occlusal status and mandibular movements in 15-yr-old children afflicted with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). The series comprised 121 JRA children, 78 girls and 43 boys, and a control group of 104 schoolchildren, 70 girls and 34 boys, taken for clinical examination. Of the JRA children, 55% had roentgenologically detectable lesions in the TMJ area. Lesions were found in 60% of the girls and in 42% of the boys, the ratio thus being 3:2. The largest group had grave lesio

[The Gottron syndrome from the dentist's viewpoint, case report].

Facultative changes in the teeth, mouth, and jaw in addition to acrogeria, acromicria, and facial erythema are found with Gottron's syndrome. Hypoplasia of the jaw, changes in the position of the teeth, or disproportional relations in the vertical dimensions of the face have been observed. These findings were also recorded in the case described here. The possibility of Gottron's syndrome should be considered if several of the above-mentioned symptoms are present.

Psychosocial Scores and Jaw Muscle Activity in Women.

AIMS: To test whether women with temporomandibular disorder (TMD)-related pain showed higher psychosocial scores and higher awake- and sleep-time jaw muscle activities (characterized by duty factors) compared to pain-free controls and whether psychosocial scores and the jaw muscle duty factors were associated. METHODS: Subjects gave informed consent to participate. The Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD) were used for diagnosis of TMD pain, and 31 and 36 women were included in the TMD-related pain and control groups, respectively. DC/TMD Axis II instruments were used to determine psychosocia

Virtual patient-based fully digital workflow for confirming jaw relationship: A dental technique.

For patients with terminal dentition and occlusal interference resulting from long-term partial edentulism, determining a reliable jaw relationship before extraction is challenging. The present technique addresses this by introducing a digital workflow for establishing and transferring the jaw relationship. A 3-dimensionally printed custom gothic arch tracer was first used to register the optimal centric relation. Combined with facial scans, the mandible was then virtually rotated to establish the vertical dimension. On this basis, preoperative denture tooth arrangement and implant planning we

Suppression of the Swallowing Reflex during Rhythmic Jaw Movements Induced by Repetitive Electrical Stimulation of the Dorsomedial Part of the Central Amygdaloid Nucleus in Rats.

A previous study indicated that the swallowing reflex is inhibited during rhythmic jaw movements induced by electrical stimulation of the anterior cortical masticatory area. Rhythmic jaw movements were induced by electrical stimulation of the central amygdaloid nucleus (CeA). The swallowing central pattern generator is the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and the lateral reticular formation in the medulla. Morphological studies have reported that the CeA projects to the NTS and the lateral reticular formation. It is therefore likely that the CeA is related to the control of the swallowing r

Involvement of the maxillary sinus in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: Radiologic aspects.

BACKGROUND: The use of bisphosphonates is very common among patients with osteoporosis and multiple myeloma as well as those with bone metastases from various malignancies. The benefits of bisphosphonates are well recognized, but it became evident during the past decade that these medications portend the major adverse effect of osteonecrosis of the jaw, known as bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the specific manifestations of bisphosphonate use on the maxillary sinus in patients with documented bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Intraoral scanner-based virtual facebow transferring: A chairside dental technique.

Accurately mounting dental casts on an articulator is an essential step in prosthetic treatments. In digital dentistry, virtual articulator mounting procedures rely on virtual facebow records. However, virtual facebow records usually require devices like face scanners or jaw motion tracking systems that are not commonly available in most dental practices. The present technique report describes a straightforward intraoral scanner-based virtual facebow transfer approach. In this technique, a reference facebow joint support was first scanned and aligned with a virtual articulator. Then, a patient

[Functional analysis in orthodontics and pedodontics].

The special examination of occlusion in the gnathological sense is less important for functional analysis in orthodontics and pedodontics. At the beginning of and during therapy, simple clinical examinations and observations provide the necessary diagnostic and prognostic information on the functioning of the individual parts of the masticatory system or their relation to each other. The clinical relevance of these findings was tested by electromyographic examinations, electronic pressure and volume measurements and tele- and cineradiographic tests. In the retention period, i.e. after therapy

Vowel effect on glottal parameters and the magnitude of jaw opening.

This study investigated the relationship among the magnitude of jaw opening, intrinsic fundamental frequency (F0), and glottal parameters in natural speech. Acoustic, jaw opening, and electroglottographic (EGG) signals were simultaneously recorded. The subjects were 10 healthy men with New Zealand English as their native language. Subjects were asked to repeat a standard nonemphasized sentence in which one of the target vowels (/a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, and /u/) was embedded in various contexts. The glottal parameters F0, open quotient (OQ), and speed quotient (SQ) were measured from the EGG signal.
