Feeding jejunostomy tubes can be useful in patients with gastroesophageal reflux or a nonfunctioning stomach and can be short-term, long-term, or permanent. These tubes can be inserted surgically, endoscopically, radiologically, or laparoscopically. Each of these techniques is described, and their mortality, morbidity, advantages, and disadvantages are compared.

BACKGROUND: Ganoderma lucidum (Lingzhi; LZ) and San-Miao-San (SMS) are Chinese medicines (CMs) used to treat inflammatory ailments and numbing syndrome/arthralgia syndrome (Bi Zheng), respectively. Given that the main symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) include inflammation of the joints, joint pain, edema and palpitations of the heart because of problems associated with Bi Zheng, it was envisaged that LZ and SMS could be used as potential treatments for this autoimmune disease. This study aims to investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of a combination formulation containing LZ

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy has been used for preventing pulmonary aspiration arising from gastric contents by concomitant jejunal feeding and gastric decompression in susceptible patients. Our objective was to evaluate gastroesophageal reflux in patients with percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy tube feeding.
METHODS: Eight cerebrovascular accident patients with percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy tube placement caused by reflux esophagitis with hematemesis, food regurgitation or vomiting, and/or recurrent aspiration pneumonia were tested for gastroesophageal reflux using 2

OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to assess adverse events, readmissions, and resource use associated with routine jejunostomy tube placement after esophagectomy.
METHODS: From September 2018 to October 2021, 215 patients, with a median age of 65 years and a median body mass index of 27 kg/m2, underwent routine jejunostomy tube placement during esophagectomy. J-tube-related adverse events were collected from date of surgery to date of removal and categorized as (1) nonserious, resource-nonintensive (eg, skin irritations, discomfort); (2) nonserious, resource-intensive (eg, infection, clogged

Objective:The aim of this study was to compare the perioperative outcomes and complications between pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) candidates with and without jejunostomy tube (J-tube) feeding. Materials and methods:This retrospective cohort study was performed on 48 patient candidates for PD, with or without J-tube placement during surgery, in Shahid Modarres Hospital, Tehran, Iran, between 2013 and 2021. Two groups were matched for age, gender, history of heart, endocrine, hypertension and kidney diseases, and drug use. A 12 French jejunal feeding tube was placed at 20-30 cm distal to gastroje

Percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy (PEJ) has been developed and is considered to be a better method than percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy for preventing the occurrence of aspiration pneumonia. However, the incidence of other complications associated with this procedure is less clear. We herein report a rare case with a small intestinal intussusception due to a PEJ placement. In this case, a radiologic examination with gastrografin was useful to detect the typical findings of a small intestinal intussusception, a beak-like filling defect, and identify the location of the lesion. An endoscop

Previous experimental studies have shown that multiple puncturing and stitching of the pancreas results in an increased pancreatic injury response. Furthermore, post-operative pancreatitis, which still is a largely under-diagnosed condition, appears to be an important mediator of many post-operative complications after pancreatic head resection. Stenting has been suggested to improve both short-term and long-term outcome after pancreaticojejunostomy. We have recently developed a biodegradable, radiopaque self-expanding stent, which has experimentally been shown suitable for pancreatobiliary ap

Simulated test of effectiveness of the original tool grasping tie--technically already illustrated in a former paper listed in bibliography--for fixing a spongy rubber tube simulating an oesophagus on a circular stapler head axis, by tightening over it a nylon ribbon slip-knot (the tie). After connecting the head to the stapler anvil through an other spongy rubber tube simulating a jejunal loop, and the firing of the stapler, it is demonstrated the correct circular anastomosis achievable.

We herein report a rare complication of the migration of a feeding jejunostomy tube through the entire intestine. A surgical Stamm jejunostomy was performed in a patient with an unresectable gastric cancer using a 28-F silicone catheter with a mushroom tip (Pezzer catheter). The catheter was suture-fixed to the skin, family members were given instructions regarding tube feeding and tube care, and the patient was discharged to home care. Two months later, he presented because of the "disappearance" of the tube. A clinical examination revealed a mature jejunostomy tract, skin erosion at the site

Feeding jejunostomy has become a useful method of feeding many patients with upper digestive tract dysfunction from a variety of causes. Although problems infrequently do occur with the tube itself, such as dislodgement or obstruction, most patients tolerate the procedure well. We report here a case of perforation of the jejunum that was caused by the tube itself and required reoperation. As with many problems in surgery, careful attention to technical details should help prevent this and other problems after feeding tube insertion.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative nutrition after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) remains controversial. Although many centers routinely place a feeding jejunostomy tube (FJT) after PD, it is associated with morbidity. We conducted this study to compare the perioperative outcomes with and without FJT placement post-PD.
METHODS: This was an open-label randomized controlled trial, in which the FJT was placed in one arm and the nasojejunal tube (NJT) in the other. All patients with periampullary neoplasm who underwent pylorus resecting PD were included in this study. The primary outcome assessed was clinic

BACKGROUND: Gastroparesis is a chronic motility disorder characterized by delayed gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction. Patients with refractory gastroparesis often require enteral nutrition support, but traditional feeding methods such as nasojejunal tubes and percutaneous gastrojejunostomy tubes have significant limitations including frequent displacement, infection, and impact on quality of life.
AIM: To explore patients' experience post insertion of laparoscopic Roux-en-Y jejunostomy in a cohort of eight adult patients with idiopathic gastroparesis.
METHODS: Eight pa

BACKGROUND: Hirschsprung disease (HD) is a congenital disorder of the enteric nervous system, and its management will differ clinically depending on the degree of aganglionosis. Total intestinal HD (TIHD) is a rare variant, accounting for < 1 % of all cases, and is defined as aganglionosis of nearly the entire intestine with less than 20 cm of ganglionated small bowel past the ligament of Treitz (LOT). TIHD can be challenging to manage with high risk for chronic intestinal failure.
CASE REPORT: Ours is a neonate confirmed pathologically to have total intestinal aganglionosis, surgically manag

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that enteral nutrition (EN) helps reduce severe postoperative complications after esophagectomy. However, the incidence of jejunostomy-related complications is approximately 30%. We evaluated the operative outcomes in patients who did not receive EN via feeding jejunostomy after esophagectomy.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 76 consecutive patients with esophageal cancer who received radical esophagectomy. Operative outcomes were compared between 33 patients who received postoperative EN via feeding jejunostomy (group A; from May 2014 to September

Penetrating neck injuries account for 5-10% of trauma cases and are potentially life threatening. We report a case of cut- throat zone II neck injury in a 45-year-old male extending up to posterior pharyngeal wall and exposing the underlying cervical vertebra. Tracheostomy was done and wound repair was started from the posterior aspect in layers using 3-0 Vicryl. Intraoperatively, a conscious decision was taken for a feeding jejunostomy for postoperative feeding, which was likely to be prolonged, in view of sensory-nerve damage along the transected pharynx. Prolonged use of Nasogastric tube fo

Jejunostomy feeding tubes provide surgeons with an excellent method for providing nutritional support, but there are several complications associated with a tube jejunostomy, including complications resulting from placement of the tube, mechanical problems related to the location or function and development of focally thickened small-bowel folds. A 76-year old man who presented with multiple medical diseases was admitted to our hospital due to aspiration pneumonia with acute respiratory failure and septic shock. He underwent exploratory laparotomy with feeding jejunostomy using a 14-French nas

We have experienced 59 jaundiced patients with unresectable carcinoma of the biliary tract or pancreas in our institute for 7 years and 6 months. A side-to-side anastomosis between a bile duct in the segment III of the liver and jejunum by Roux-en Y manner was preferred as a palliative internal drainage operation in 13 cases out of them. The operative procedure was described in details. There was no operative death. The postoperative complications occurred in 4 cases, 2 at early and 2 at late phase, respectively. However, they were all recovered within a short period. Mean survival time after

PURPOSE: Jejunostomy feeding tubes are commonly used during esophagectomy to provide postoperative nutritional support, but their impact on clinical outcomes remains uncertain.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 507 patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer at the Northern Oesophagogastric Unit between 2012 and 2014 and 2016-2019. Routine postoperative jejunostomy feeding was introduced in 2015. Outcomes measured were percentage weight change at 2, 6, 12, and 24 weeks postoperatively, length of hospital stay, weight loss in patients with major complications (Clavien-D
