Deviations from adequate use and reporting of PROMs may be problematic and misleading. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent of such problems in randomized clinical trials (RCTs). RCTs involving sports medicine research that used PROMs as primary outcomes were identified in 13 preselected journals. The articles were reviewed for nine potential problems related to how the PROM was used and how the data had been reported. The potential problems were as follows: aggregating subscale scores; combining patient-reported scores with physical, clinical, or para-clinical measures; using a

Animal models are commonly used for translational research despite evidence that the methodology of these studies is often inconsistent and substandard. This study describes the characteristics and impact of published research using animal models in the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM). Peer-reviewed articles published in the AJSM between January 1990 and January 2010 using animal models were identified using MEDLINE. The articles were reviewed for funding source, anesthesia used, animal used, study type, study location, outcome measures, number of animals, duration of animal surviva

Asbestos is a well-known cause of cancer and respiratory diseases. The aim of the current study was to investigate the scientific production in asbestos research evaluating temporal trend, geographic distribution, impact factor (IF) of published literature, and taking into account socioeconomic variables. The PubMed database was searched starting from 1970. Publication numbers and IF were evaluated as absolute values and after standardization by population and gross domestic product (GDP). Six thousand nine hundred seven articles related to asbestos were retrieved. Publications grew steeply in

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Systematic reviews (SRs) provide crucial evidence for gastric cancer interventions, but their reliability can be compromised by methodological flaws. We aimed to evaluate the methodological quality of SRs on gastric cancer interventions and identify factors affecting their quality.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, APA PsycInfo, Embase, and Cochrane Database of SRs for eligible SRs published between January 2014 and October 2023. The methodological quality was assessed using AMSTAR 2. Multivariable regression analyses were conducted to identify factors influencing qua

BACKGROUND: Although randomized trials and systematic reviews provide the best evidence to guide medical practice, many permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus (PNDM) studies have been published as case reports. However, the quality of these studies has not been assessed. The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which the current case reports for PNDM comply with the Case Report (CARE) guidelines and to explore variables associated with the reporting.
METHOD: Six English and four Chinese databases were searched from their inception to December 2022 for PNDM case reports. The 23 item

The biological and medical importance of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) has been recognized for decades. The aim of this bibliometric study is to analyze the quantity and quality of publications in H₂S biology and medicine (H₂SBM) based on the databases of Web of Science and Google Scholar. A total of 5881 publications published between 1990 and 2016 were analyzed. The number of H₂SBM papers published before 2004 was below 100 annually, but thereafter this number rapidly increased and peaked in 2015 with more than 7-fold increase. All publications related to H₂SBM research achieved a total h-index of

BACKGROUND: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are considered the gold standard in evidence-based medicine. Underpowered RCTs that describe comparative outcomes without significance are of questionable benefit. The present study hypothesizes that a substantial proportion of RCTs in the orthopaedic literature that do not note significant differences between groups are inadequately powered.
METHODS: Using the ISI Web of Science database, we searched all English-language journals in the orthopaedic category for RCTs published from January 2012 to December 2013. Qualifying articles were analyzed

BACKGROUND: Nigeria carries the highest burden and diversity of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in sub-Saharan Africa and is preparing to scale up its efforts to control/eliminate these diseases. To achieve this it will require a range of internal technical support and expertise for mapping, monitoring and evaluating, operational research and documenting its success. In order to begin to evaluate this potential in Nigeria, this study collated and analysed information for lymphatic filariasis (LF), onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths (STH), which are currently bein

OBJECTIVE: Professional medical writers assist authors with ethical and accurate publication of scientific research. We hypothesized that the support of a medical writer would enable timely publication of research and explored their association using papers reporting phase III oncology trials from 2019-2023. Given the time frame of this research, we also assessed the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic on publication volume as a secondary objective.
METHODS: We searched PubMed for phase III clinical trials published in New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and the Lanc

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a rare autoimmune blistering disease characterized by intraepithelial and mucocutaneous blister formation and erosion. Numerous articles related to PV have been published. However, which articles have a tremendous influence is still unknown, and factors affecting article citation numbers remain unclear. We aimed to visualize the prominent entities using the top 100 most-cited articles on the topic of PV (T100PV), and investigate whether medical subject headings (i.e., MeSH terms) can be used to predict article citations.
METHODS: By searching the PubMed

BACKGROUND: Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic liver disease characterized by intrahepatic bile-duct destruction, cholestasis, and fibrosis. It can lead to cirrhosis and eventually liver failure. PBC also shows some regional differences with respect to incidence and prevalence that are becoming more pronounced each year. Recently, researchers have paid more attention to PBC. To evaluate the development of PBC research during the past 11 years, we determined the quantity and quality of articles on this subject. We also compared the contributions of scientists from the US, UK, Japan, I

This paper investigates the quality of outcomes reported in systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of bladder pain syndrome and its relationship with study quality and journal impact factor. We searched until August 2013 the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Medline, CINAHL, LILACS and SIGLE, without language restrictions. Quality of outcome reporting in systematic reviews and constituent RCTs was assessed using a 6-point scale. Overall study quality was assessed using the AMSTAR and Jadad scoring systems, and impact factor in the year of publication was noted. Spearman's rank corr
