Emergence, spread, persistence and fade-out of sylvatic plague in Kazakhstan.

Predicting the dynamics of zoonoses in wildlife is important not only for prevention of transmission to humans, but also for improving the general understanding of epidemiological processes. A large dataset on sylvatic plague in the Pre-Balkhash area of Kazakhstan (collected for surveillance purposes) provides a rare opportunity for detailed statistical modelling of an infectious disease. Previous work using these data has revealed a host abundance threshold for epizootics, and climatic influences on plague prevalence. Here, we present a model describing the local space-time dynamics of the di

Child health and environmental pollution in the Aral Sea region in Kazakhstan.

Environmental pollutants, which may occur in breast milk and in various food products and drinking water, and which are also transferred to the foetus, constitute a severe threat to the health of infants and children. Among such compounds, various organochlorines, such as pesticides for the control of parasites (DDTs, HCHs), and products of industry and agriculture, such as dioxins and dioxin-like compounds (PCBs), are much discussed, in addition to organic mercury and heavy metals, such as lead and cadmium. The consequences of acute exposure to PCB have been documented in Japan following the

Environmental pollution and child health in the Aral Sea region in Kazakhstan.

The deterioration of human health with increasing infant mortality rate, declining life expectancy at birth and increasing prevalence of serious infectious diseases in Russia and other former Soviet Republics is thought to be due to a combination of several factors such as inadequate nutrition, poor sanitation, collapse of the health care system and pollution from Soviet agriculture and industries. In the Aral Sea region in Kazakhstan, the environmental problems are of near catastrophic proportions. As a result of the implementation of a massive irrigation scheme to support the cotton fields i

Integrated BLV surveillance in Kazakhstan, 2025: diagnostic complementarity and risk zoning.

BACKGROUND: Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is a cell-associated retrovirus that remains endemic in many cattle-producing countries. In the absence of effective vaccination, BLV control relies on sustained surveillance and accurate interpretation of serological and molecular diagnostic data. However, the systematic integration of multiple diagnostic layers with spatial analysis at the national level remains limited in endemic settings. METHODS: In 2025, a nationwide integrated surveillance of BLV was conducted in the Republic of Kazakhstan. A total of 3,650 serum samples were collected from 140 e

Proposing new lipoprotein (a) cut off value for Kazakhstan: pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: There is no consensus on the optimal concentration of lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) for the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) and aortic valve stenosis. In various clinical guidelines and agreed documents, the threshold level of Lp (a) is 30 mg/dl or 50 mg/dl. We estimated the cut-off value of Lp (a) associated with the risk of developing various localizations of atherosclerosis for the Central Asia, including Kazakhstani population. METHODS: This study was conducted at National Research Cardiac Surgery Center, Kazakhstan. 487 patients were included, of which 61.3

Animal Rabies in Kazakhstan: Stable Endemicity, Surveillance Pitfalls, and Priority Actions.

Rabies is endemic in Kazakhstan, with the primary reservoirs being wild canids, such as foxes and dogs, maintaining distinct sylvatic and urban cycles. This paper outlines three high-return priorities for rabies control in the country, informed by the epidemiological patterns of the disease, the national regulatory framework (Order No. 7-1/587), and evidence on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of the Kazakh population. The three priorities are (a) transition into a One Health, real-time surveillance system featuring standardized digital reporting and GIS-guided interventions; (b)
