In normal subjects transient horizontal body rotation in the dark (vestibular stimulation) elicited a DC potential change with the maximum at Cz. The response appeared to covary with stimulus velocity, which is the most relevant stimulus parameter transferred by the horizontal semicircular canal system. A similar response was obtained during optokinetic stimulation. However, the following findings suggested that the responses are related to 'high' perceptual functions rather than representing a visuo-vestibular evoked cortical potential: (a) the visual response was found independent of whether

Six patients with a distinct syndrome of persistent sensations of imbalance are presented. Common features included onset following a period of motion exposure, symptoms lasting months to years, mild unsteadiness and anxiety, minimal relief from antivertiginous medication, and normal neurologic and quantitative vestibulo-ocular examinations. One patient experienced recurrent episodes. Mal de debarquement refers to sensations of motion experienced on return to stable land after adaptation to motion lasting from hours to days in normal individuals. The presented patients exemplify a syndrome of

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the cortical processing of spindle input in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), hypothesizing that functional MRI (fMRI) activation elicited by muscle-tendon vibration would reveal specific disruptions in the integration of this sensory pathway.
METHODS: A block-designed fMRI protocol was used, consisting of 20-second periods of focal muscle-tendon vibrations (∼70-Hz frequency) applied to the first dorsal interosseous tendon, alternating with rest periods. Parametric brain activation maps were examined in 22 patients with ALS without clinicall

Body awareness is the result of sensory integration in the posterior parietal cortex; however, other brain structures are part of this process. Our goal is to determine how the cingulate cortex is involved in the representation of our body. We retrospectively selected patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, explored by stereo-electroencephalography, that had the cingulate cortex sampled outside the epileptogenic zone. The clinical effects of high-frequency electrical stimulation were reviewed and only those sites that elicited changes related to body perception were included. Connectivity of th

AIM: This study was carried out to systematically describe nurses' competence in kinaesthetics.
BACKGROUND: In elderly care the kinaesthetics program for nurses has been taught for over 25 years; however, the competence that nurses should gain through kinaesthetics training from a theoretical perspective has not yet been systematically described.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The method was modelled after the three phases of the hybrid model of concept development by Schwartz-Barcott and Kim (2000). In the theoretical phase a working definition was established and a literature review conducted. We s

The brain typically uses a rich supply of feedback from multiple sensory modalities to control movement in healthy individuals. In many individuals, these afferent pathways, as well as their efferent counterparts, are compromised by disease or injury resulting in significant impairments and reduced quality of life. Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) offer the promise of recovered functionality to these individuals by allowing them to control a device using their thoughts. Most current BMI implementations use visual feedback for closed-loop control; however, it has been suggested that the inclusio

This research was designed to test the predictions of 2 approaches to perception. By most traditional accounts, people are thought to derive general-purpose spatial perceptions that are scaled in arbitrary, unspecified units. In contrast, action-specific approaches propose that the angular information inherent in optic flow and ocular-motor adjustments is rescaled and transformed into units related to intended actions. A number of studies have shown, for example, that the apparent distance to targets is scaled by the effort required to walk the extent. Such studies can be accommodated by the t

UNLABELLED: Pusher syndrome is an interesting disorder of balance in patients with encephalic lesions characterized by the peculiar behavior of actively pushing away from the non-hemiparetic side and resisting against passive correction, with a tendency to fall toward the paralyzed side. The role of vestibular system on the pushing behavior is not clear.
AIM: To evaluate horizontal semicircular canal function in patients with Pusher syndrome, using caloric and rotation tests.
STUDY DESIGN: Observational prospective.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We evaluated 9 inpatients with stroke and Pusher syndr

OBJECTIVE: To apply the lesion method to assess neuroanatomical substrates for judgments of forearm orientation from proprioceptive cues in humans.
METHODS: Participants were 15 subjects with chronic unilateral brain lesions and stable behavioural deficits, and 14 neurologically normal controls. Subjects aligned the forearm to earth fixed vertical and trunk fixed anterior-posterior (A-P) axes ("straight ahead"), with the head aligned to the trunk and with head and shoulder orientations varied on each trial.
RESULTS: Most subjects with posterior parietal lobe lesions made larger variable erro

Motion sickness provides a unique setting for the study of nausea. Studies of illusory self-motion have linked nausea and objective measures of gastric dysrhythmias and the stress hormones vasopressin and epinephrine. Electrogastrographic methods utilize Ag-AgCl electrodes placed on the abdominal surface in the epigastric region to record electrogastrograms (EGGs), a noninvasive measure of gastric myoelectrical activity. The EGG frequencies of interest are the normal range (2.4-3.6 cpm), tachygastrias (3.6-9.9 cpm), and bradygastrias (1.0-2.4 cpm), and duodenal respiratory frequencies (10.0-15

In the present experiment the role of vision in the control of repetitive circular movements was examined. Subjects drew circles at a 600 ms per circle rate. During the first nine seconds of the trial subjects moved with full vision and were paced by a metronome. During the latter 15 seconds, vision could be removed and/or the pacing signal could be removed. There were no effects of the pacing signal on the temporal and spatial characteristics of the circle. Withdrawal of vision did not affect the shape of the circle, but did change its scaler quality. The circles became smaller and the center

In order to investigate the changes of motoneuron excitability during mental simulation of a voluntary movement (motor imagery; MI), the soleus H-reflex and several activities of autonomic effectors were recorded simultaneously when MI of speed skate sprint was performed. The subjects were seven elite speed skate athletes ranging in age from 18 to 24 years old. They were all skilled in MI, and could imagine full vivid skating movement internally as if they were really exercising. The subjects were awake, relaxed and blindfolded. At first, rest (5 min), positive relaxation (4 min) and concentra

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of prior instruction on automatic postural responses and voluntary postural sways measured about the ankle joint. Ten subjects with right hemiplegia resulting from a cerebrovascular accident (mean age = 56 +/- 14 years) and 5 healthy subjects (mean age = 47 +/- 6 years) stood symmetrically on a movable force platform. During platform-induced sway, the support surface was translated horizontally to induce antero-posterior body sway about the ankle joints. Surface electromyographs were obtained from the tibialis anterior, quadriceps femoris, g

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of recurrent lateral ankle sprains on subjects' active and passive judgments of joint position. Fourteen subjects with recurrent unilateral ankle sprains contributed data to two groups: 1) In Group 1, the subjects' 14 sprained ankles were tested and 2) in Group 2, the same 14 subjects' contralateral nonsprained ankles were tested. An additional seven subjects with no history of injury to either ankle comprised Group 3 with 14 nonsprained control ankles. The experimenter tested all blindfolded subjects with active and passive attempts at repl

BackgroundProprioception is critical for daily activities and is often impaired after stroke. Recent studies have highlighted the prevalence of proprioceptive impairments of the upper limb in stroke; however, few studies have examined the relationship between proprioceptive impairments and motor function.ObjectiveWe examined how proprioceptive detection thresholds (movement discrimination thresholds [MDTs]) relate to existing assessments of upper limb proprioceptive, motor, and clinical function after stroke.MethodsStroke (N = 39) and control participants (N = 39) completed 5 tasks using the K

Background: Poststroke hemiparesis presents with motor asymmetry and decreased postural control leading to functional limitations. Serious games (SG) for balance rehabilitation of people with stroke may improve motor recovery, and the visual and auditory feedback provided by the SGs helps to explain the therapeutic benefits. However, the contribution of SG combined with kinesthetic and verbal cues during balance training has not been investigated. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of two feedback conditions for an SG balance intervention, with or without the addition of kinesthet

Dynamic knee valgus (DKV) malalignment affects the biomechanical characteristic during sports activities. This cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate mechanical energy absorption (MEA) strategies at initial contact (IC) and total landing (TL) phases during single-leg landing (SLL), and double-leg landing (DLL). Twenty-eight female athletes with DKV (age 10-14) were invited. MEA analysis of lower extremity joints was done in sagittal and frontal motion planes employing 8 Vicon motion capture cameras and 2 Kistler force plates. Statistical analysis was done using IBM Statistics (version
