A community-based study of parents' knowledge, attitudes and beliefs related to childhood injuries.

This study assessed parents' knowledge of injury risks for children, attitudes within children's injury-risk behaviours, and beliefs related to a number of aspects of childhood injuries. Parents completed questionnaires and participated in discussions using scenarios depicting child-injury situations that involved a parent and child. Results indicated that parents view injuries largely as a natural consequence of childhood and they believe children learn about risk avoidance from injury experiences. Parents' responses did not indicate a strong belief that injuries to children are preventable o

Impact of a clinic-based growth monitoring programme on maternal nutrition knowledge in Lesotho.

An evaluation of the impact of a nationwide clinic-based growth monitoring (GM) programme was done in Lesotho to determine if clinic attendance was associated with improved maternal knowledge of weaning practices and diarrhoea. A total of 907 mothers from eight clinics were included in the study. Our results showed that mothers who had attended the clinics knew more about the appropriate timing for introducing animal protein-rich foods in the child's diet and about the use of oral rehydration salts for diarrhoea, than those who had not. The difference in knowledge between previous clinic atten

Measuring planetary health knowledge: Development and psychometric evaluation of a taxonomy-based test.

Planetary Health Knowledge (PHK) refers to knowledge about global conditions and interrelations between the health of the planet, human health, and human civilization. In times of various humanitarian and environmental crises, knowledge about and awareness of these problems become increasingly important. This is reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals and various Global Citizenship Education programs that emphasize the importance of knowledge about global challenges as a key characteristic in promoting sustainability. Despite its relevance, a comprehensive, psychometrically evaluated me

An optimized knowledge-based planning method for craniospinal irradiation integrated with auto-contouring.

BACKGROUND: Craniospinal irradiation (CSI) is a complex treatment requiring precise delineation of extended plan target volumes (PTV) and multiple organs at risk (OARs). The process traditionally demands substantial time and expertise from physicians and medical physicists. While artificial intelligence (AI) has shown promise in auto-contouring and auto-planning in other tumors, its application to CSI remains limited due to challenges in model generalizability and outlier sensitivity. METHODS: We developed an automated workflow integrating deep learning-based auto-contouring and machine learn

SingPro 2.0: a proteomics-centric knowledge base for single-cell multimodal profiling.

Protein-inclusive single-cell multimodal profiling has emerged as a transformative strategy for resolving cellular heterogeneity by jointly measuring proteins and complementary molecular features in the same cells. The resulting protein-inclusive datasets are increasingly used to characterize cellular states, construct multimodal cell atlases, and decode disease mechanisms. However, such data are rarely included in existing databases. In this study, SingPro was updated from a single-cell proteomics database into a proteomics-centric knowledge base for single-cell multimodal profiling. Distinct

The disputed role of knowledge in truth illusions: A critical test based on comparative judgments.

It has been argued that the illusory truth effect - the tendency to judge repeated statements as more likely true - persists even when a statement is known to be false, whereas a competing view maintains that knowledge shields against such truth illusions. In this study, we reexamine two models of truth judgment that formalize these opposing perspectives: the fluency-conditional model (FCM), which assumes that repetition-induced fluency can override knowledge, and the knowledge-conditional model (KCM), which assumes that knowledge always takes precedence over fluency, such that fluency only be

Dosimetric impact of knowledge-based automated planning using HyperArc for angiosarcoma of the scalp.

This study aimed to automate and standardize treatment planning by comparing the dosimetric performance of conventional volumetric modulated arc therapy (C-VMAT) with that of HyperArc optimized using the knowledge-based RapidPlan model trained with the HyperArc plan (RP-HA) for total scalp irradiation (TSI) in the treatment of angiosarcoma of the scalp (AS). Additionally, this study compared the dosimetric performance of RP-HA with that of non-coplanar VMAT optimized using the same model (RP-NC-VMAT). From 40 patients with AS who had undergone TSI, 20 patients were selected for HyperArc planni

Blood-based epigenetic biomarkers in rheumatoid arthritis: current knowledge and future perspectives.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease that leads to progressive joint destruction, extra-articular manifestations, disability, and increased mortality. Early detection, particularly in seronegative patients, remains challenging because current diagnostic criteria based on joint involvement, serology, and acute-phase reactants may fail to identify disease at its earliest stages. Epigenetic mechanisms, including DNA and RNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), provide a dynamic interface between genetic predisposition and environmental tr

Mobile-based health education interventions for improving tuberculosis knowledge in rural communities.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge in many low- and middle-income countries, especially in rural areas where access to formal health services is limited and awareness of the disease is low. Surveys in rural community in UP, India show that fewer than half of rural adults have adequate knowledge of TB and only about 11 % demonstrate positive attitudes toward the disease, underscoring the need for community-focused education. Digital health technologies, such as mobile phone applications, text messages and interactive videos, have been endorsed by the World Health Organiza

Effects of model size and composition on quality of head-and-neck knowledge-based plans.

PURPOSE: Knowledge-based planning (KBP) aims to automate and standardize treatment planning. New KBP users are faced with many questions: How much does model size matter, and are multiple models needed to accommodate specific physician preferences? In this study, six head-and-neck KBP models were trained to address these questions. METHODS: The six models differed in training size and plan composition: The KBPFull (n = 203 plans), KBP101 (n = 101), KBP50 (n = 50), and KBP25 (n = 25) were trained with plans from two head-and-neck physicians. KBPA and KBPB each contained n = 101 plans from only

Augmenting Expert Knowledge-Based Toxicity Alerts by Statistically Mined Molecular Fragments.

Structural alerts are molecular substructures assumed to be associated with molecular initiating events in various toxic effects and an integral part of in silico toxicology. However, alerts derived using the knowledge of human experts often suffer from a lack of predictivity, specificity, and satisfactory coverage. In this work, we present a method to build hybrid QSAR models by combining expert knowledge-based alerts and statistically mined molecular fragments. Our objective was to find out if the combination is better than the individual systems. Lasso regularization-based variable selectio

Explicit knowledge of task structure is a primary determinant of human model-based action.

Explicit information obtained through instruction profoundly shapes human choice behaviour. However, this has been studied in computationally simple tasks, and it is unknown how model-based and model-free systems, respectively generating goal-directed and habitual actions, are affected by the absence or presence of instructions. We assessed behaviour in a variant of a computationally more complex decision-making task, before and after providing information about task structure, both in healthy volunteers and in individuals suffering from obsessive-compulsive or other disorders. Initial behavio

A questionnaire-based study of Paediatric Dentists' knowledge of teething signs, symptoms and management.

INTRODUCTION: Signs and symptoms attributed to erupting primary teeth are commonly known as "teething". Its existence is controversial with concern that overusing this term might mask other illnesses and some treatments may be unnecessary or harmful. Parents/carers can access over-the-counter remedies and may seek professional advice. This survey-based investigation explored gaps in knowledge, training, perceptions and experiences of UK Paediatric Dentists (PDs) regarding teething in young children. METHOD: Cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of PDs with different training levels,
