Youth Soccer Parents' Perceptions of Long-Term Effects of Concussion .

Increased focus on sports-related concussion (SRC) in football in the media, and mandatory concussion education for parents of youth sport athletes, may result in parental concern that youth athletes will experience long-term effects from concussion. We sought to identify beliefs about long-term effects of concussion in parents of youth soccer athletes. Four hundred and eleven parents from soccer leagues in three states completed a survey assessing parents' perceptions and knowledge of long-term effects of SRC. Nearly all youth soccer parents surveyed (96.5%) believe there are long-term effect

Rapid diagnosis of viral infections in the central nervous system.

Rapid diagnosis of viral infections in the central nervous system has become increasingly important. Antiviral treatment, prevention of spread of disease and differentiation from infections caused by agents sensitive to antibiotics may be the important consequences of a virus specific diagnosis gained early in the disease. The diagnosis can be obtained by detection of virus or viral antigen in the human specimen: herpes simplex virus by electron microscopy, immunofluorescence or immunosorbent assays in brain biopsies; rabies virus by immunofluorescence in corneal cells or skin and mucous membr

Cognitions That Support Concussion Reporting in Collegiate Athletes: An Analysis of a Worksheet Activity.

BACKGROUND: Sports related concussions continue to be a public health concern and improving reporting behavior a focus of educational programs. While educational programs have addressed changes in knowledge of concussion symptoms, it has been challenging to design educational programs which have lasting effects on reporting behavior. AIMS: The current analysis describes an intervention in which thoughts about reporting behavior are actively written down in a worksheet exercise to "pre-arm" athletes with cognitions designed to enhance reporting behavior prior to the injury event. METHOD: A to

Detecting changes in postural sway.

Postural sway has been identified as a valid marker for assessing the presence of a concussion and monitoring return to activity progression. Instrumented balance assessments have shown to be more reliable in detecting postural sway. However, many sports medicine programs cannot afford to purchase a force plate system to objectively assess postural sway and changes, which may occur due to a head injury. The purpose of this study was to determine if the C3Logix™ application can detect postural sway with the same degree of accuracy as the VSR Sport™ by NeuroCom®. Forty-five Division I Lacrosse p

Global climate change and infectious diseases.

The effects of global climate change on infectious diseases are hypothetical until more is known about the degree of change in temperature and humidity that will occur. Diseases most likely to increase in their distribution and severity have three-factor (agent, vector, and human being) and four-factor (plus vertebrate reservoir host) ecology. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes may move northward and have more rapid metamorphosis with global warming. These mosquitoes transmit dengue virus, and Aedes aegypti transmits yellow fever virus. The faster metamorphosis and a shorter extrins

Hamstring muscle kinematics and activation during overground sprinting.

Hamstring muscle strain injury is one of the most commonly seen injuries in sports such as track and field, soccer, football, and rugby. The purpose of this study was to advance our understanding of the mechanisms of hamstring muscle strain injuries during over ground sprinting by investigating hamstring muscle-tendon kinematics and muscle activation. Three-dimensional videographic and electromyographic (EMG) data were collected for 20 male runners, soccer or lacrosse players performing overground sprinting at their maximum effort. Hamstring muscle-tendon lengths, elongation velocities, and li

Evaluation of chest barriers for protection against sudden death due to commotio cordis.

Blunt precordial blows triggering ventricular fibrillation (commotio cordis) represent a leading cause of sudden death in young athletes. Attention has focused on the primary prevention of these tragedies with chest barriers. The U.S. Commotio Cordis Registry was accessed to determine the likelihood of sudden death in athletes exposed to precordial blows while wearing chest protectors. Of 182 cases of commotio cordis, 85 (47%) occurred during practice or competition in organized sports. In 32 of these 85 competitive athletes (38%), fatal chest blows occurred despite the presence of potentially

The Development of Fast, Fit, and Fatigue Resistant Youth Field and Court Sport Athletes: A Narrative Review.

Humans are fascinated by the bipedal locomotor capacities at both ends of the athletic spectrum-sprinting speed and endurance. Some of the more popular field (eg, soccer, rugby, and lacrosse) and court (eg, basketball, tennis, and netball) sports utilize mixed energy systems requiring an interplay of both maximal sprinting speed (MSS) and maximal aerobic speed (MAS) to meet the high-intensity running demands of varying frequency, duration, intensity, and recovery. Recently, these locomotor capacities have been considered in combination to produce what is called the anaerobic speed reserve (ASR

Chronic Compartment Syndrome in Athletes.

Chronic compartment syndrome (CCS) is a pressure increase within a non-expandable fibro-osseous space resulting from continuous and intense physical activity. Its symptoms usually improve with rest or reduced activity. It is a critical cause of lower limb pain in athletes and the second most common cause of effort-related leg pain. Less frequent reports include CCS in the lumbar paravertebral compartments, in the hand, the forearm, the thigh, and the foot. Although CCS mainly affects long-distance runners, it may also occur in sports such as lacrosse, football, basketball, skiing, and field ho

Management guidelines for participation in collision activities with congenital, developmental, or post-injury lesions involving the cervical spine.

Conditions involving the cervical spine in the athlete requiring management decisions are numerous. The purpose of this paper is to present appropriate guidelines for return to collision activities in those with congenital, developmental, or post-injury lesions. Collision activities include boxing, football, ice hockey, lacrosse, rugby and wrestling. Information compiled from over 1200 cervical spine lesions documented by the National Football Head and Neck Injury Registry, an extensive literature review, as well as an understanding of injury mechanisms have resulted in reasonable management g

Fractures and refractures in intercollegiate athletes. An eleven-year experience.

This report on fractures and refractures in intercollegiate athletes covers an 11-year period from the early Fall of 1968 through the Spring of 1979. Two hundred thirty-one fractures occurred in 219 athletes. Of these athletes, 185 were male and 34 were female. Fractures occurred in 18 sports. Of these 18, football, basketball, wrestling, and soccer led in number for Men's (M) teams, and gymnastics, lacrosse, and volleyball led for Ladies' (L) teams. (Because of this institution's early involvement with Title IX, and the strong position taken by our administration, our teams are designated Gen

Quadriceps Tendon Autograft Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction With Internal Brace Augmentation: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is among the most common knee procedures in the United States, particularly in athletes who participate in cutting and pivoting sports. While bone-patellar tendon-bone (BTB) autografts have long been considered the gold standard for this group, drawbacks such as anterior knee pain and difficulty kneeling have prompted interest in quadriceps tendon autografts. With a larger cross-sectional area and higher load-to-failure, the quadriceps autograft is a promising alternative. This study reported return-to-play timelines and re-rupture

A reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction assay for detecting Highlands J virus.

Highlands J (HJ) virus is an arbovirus frequently recovered at high rates in mosquitoes collected in the eastern United States. HJ virus is primarily a veterinary pathogen causing disease in domestic birds including turkeys, chickens, and partridges. It has an enzootic cycle similar to eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus and is often used as an indicator species in EEE surveillance programs. Current immunologic techniques to identify HJ virus are often inefficient and can involve cross-reactivity of antibodies. Therefore, we developed a molecular-based assay by a reverse transcriptase (RT)

Sport-Specific Recovery Trajectories for NCAA Collegiate Athletes Following Concussion.

The recovery trajectories of collegiate athletes with sport-related concussion (SRC) are well characterized in contact/collision sports but are less well understood in limited contact sports with lower risk, reducing the ability of clinicians to effectively manage the return-to-play (RTP) process. The current study investigated the time to asymptomatic and RTP across a broad range of male and female collegiate sports and sought to group sports by recovery intervals. Data from the Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium included 1049 collegiate athletes who sustained a S
