Lactation stages modulate the hematological, serum biochemical, and endocrinological profiles and oxidative stress markers in crossbred cows under tropical humid island ecosystem of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The present study was designed to assess the interrelationship between hematological, serum biochemical, and endocrinological profiles and oxidative stress markers and lactational stages in crossbred (CB) dairy cows of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI). Healthy (n = 6) CB cows (50-62.50% exotic inheritance; Holstein Friesian × Andaman local) of 4th parity with age of 7-9 years and body weight of 350-400 kg were selected from Cattle Breeding Farm, ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CIARI), Port Blair, ANI. These experimental cows were synchronized with Ovsynch protocol, a

Fetal Programming Is Deeply Related to Maternal Selenium Status and Oxidative Balance; Experimental Offspring Health Repercussions.

Nutrients consumed by mothers during pregnancy and lactation can exert permanent effects upon infant developing tissues, which could represent an important risk factor for diseases during adulthood. One of the important nutrients that contributes to regulating the cell cycle and tissue development and functionality is the trace element selenium (Se). Maternal Se requirements increase during gestation and lactation. Se performs its biological action by forming part of 25 selenoproteins, most of which have antioxidant properties, such as glutathione peroxidases (GPxs) and selenoprotein P (SELENO

Periparturient Diseases in the Dam.

This article provides an overview of some of the most common diseases affecting the dam in the periparturient period, including disorders of lactation, inappropriate maternal behavior, mastitis, metritis, and eclampsia. The dam experiences hormonal, physiologic, and physical changes during pregnancy, parturition, and lactation. Obtaining a detailed history and performing a thorough physical examination are essential for accurately diagnosing and treating the dam during this unique time. A particular challenge exists when identifying problems in the periparturient period, because all medication

Lactation Duration and Long-Term Thyroid Function: A Study among Women with Gestational Diabetes.

Lactation is associated with reduced postpartum weight retention and a lower risk of several cardiometabolic disorders in population-based studies. We examined the association between lactation and long-term thyroid function among women with history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a high-risk population for subsequent metabolic complications. The study included 550 women who developed GDM in the Danish National Birth Cohort (1996⁻2002) and followed-up in the Diabetes & Women's Health Study (2012⁻2014). We assessed adjusted associations between cumulative lactation duration and conc

Hypothalamic AgRP neurons regulate the hyperphagia of lactation.

OBJECTIVE: The lactational period is associated with profound hyperphagia to accommodate the energy demands of nursing. These changes are important for the long-term metabolic health of the mother and children as altered feeding during lactation increases the risk of mothers and offspring developing metabolic disorders later in life. However, the specific behavioral mechanisms and neural circuitry mediating the hyperphagia of lactation are incompletely understood. METHODS: Here, we utilized home cage feeding devices to characterize the dynamics of feeding behavior in lactating mice. A combina

Effect of increased milking frequency in early lactation with or without recombinant bovine somatotropin.

Multiparous Holstein cows (n = 300) were assigned to 1 of 2 milking frequency treatments at parturition. Cows were either milked 6 times (6x) or 3 times (3x) daily to determine effects on early lactation milk yields and subsequent lactation persistency with or without use of recombinant bST (rbST). Treatments included a control group milked 3x and 3 groups milked 6x for either the first 7, 14, or 21 days in milk (DIM). Those 4 groups of cows all received rbST starting at 63 DIM. The fifth treatment group was also milked 6x for the first 21 DIM but those cows received no rbST during the entire

Management of cluster headache and other trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Many clinicians lack experience in managing trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs) in pregnancy and lactation. In addition to cluster headache, TACs include hemicrania continua, paroxysmal hemicrania, and short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache with conjunctival injection and tearing/autonomic symptoms (SUNCT/SUNA). Treating these rare, severe headache conditions often requires off-label drugs that have uncertain teratogenic potential. In the last few years, several new treatment options and safety documentation have emerged, but clinical guidelines are lacking. This narrative review

Metabolic profiles of cow's blood; a review.

The term 'metabolic profile' refers to the analysis of blood biochemical parameters that are useful to assess and prevent metabolic and nutritional disorders in dairy herds. In the higher standards of milk production, the priority in modern breeding is keeping dairy cows in high lactation and healthy. The proper analysis, as well as control. of their feeding and metabolic status is immensely important for the health condition of the herd. The disproportion between the genetically determined ability for milk production and the limitations in improving the energy value of the ration may be the c

An Observational Study Protocol for Assessing Lactation Intensity and Reduction in the Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome After a Maternal Complication of Pregnancy (LEMON Study).

BACKGROUND: Major pregnancy complications, such as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus, delivery of a small for gestational age infant, preterm delivery, and placental abruption, are associated with the development of Type II diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Improving breastfeeding longevity may reduce long-term risk for cardiovascular disease for those with major pregnancy complications. Metabolic syndrome (i.e., the presence of at least three specific cardiovascular disease risk factors) is an appropriate marker to assess future cardiovascular risk

Rumination time around dry-off relative to the development of diseases in early-lactation cows.

Monitoring rumination time (RT) around the time of calving is an effective way of identifying cows at risk of disease in early lactation. However, this only allows for the identification of cows a few days before the onset of clinical signs; thus, effective preventive measures cannot be implemented. Recent research has suggested that biomarkers of immune and metabolic function measured at dry-off (DO) can predict higher disease risk in early lactation. Nevertheless, the extent to which RT around DO is associated with early-lactation disease risk remains unexplored. Thus, the objective of this

[A decrease in blood beta-carotene in dairy cows during late pregnancy period].

In four successive seasons of green and winter feeding in the years 1980-1984, beta-carotene concentrations were determined in the plasma of venous blood of 3441 cows in the first phase of lactation, in the other phase of lactation, in the eighth month of pregnancy and in the 9th-9.5th months of pregnancy. The cows in the other phase of lactation had the significantly highest beta-carotene concentrations in the two feeding seasons. In the eighth month of pregnancy there occurs a significant drop that continues also in the 9th-9.5th months of pregnancy. In the first phase of lactation beta-caro

[Diseases and culling of Swiss dairy cows. 2. Culling and relation between diseases and milk production parameters].

During three years (1982 to 1984) data were collected concerning diseases and reasons for culling in 612 dairy farms with Brown Swiss, Simmental and Black and White cattle. The frequency of culling increases in all three breeds with increasing age, from 20% at the first lactation up to 33% from the 4th lactation on. The main reasons for disposal are insufficient production, reproductive problems or udder diseases. After treatment for reproductive problems, mastitis or acetonemia, the risk for culling within the same lactation period is increased. Reproductive problems (no heat symptoms, repeat

Toxoplasma gondii in naturally infected goats: Monitoring of specific IgG levels in serum and milk during lactation and parasitic DNA detection in milk.

The zoonotic protozoa Toxoplasma gondii is one of the major abortive pathogens in small ruminants. Nevertheless, data on T. gondii infection in goats during lactation and on the presence of T. gondii in goat milk are lacking. A longitudinal study was planned in a T. gondii naturally infected dairy goat farm with the aim of (i) evaluating the variation of anti-T. gondii antibodies in blood and milk during the lactation; (ii) identifying the optimal phase during lactation for T. gondii monitoring; (iii) detecting the presence of T. gondii DNA in the milk. Incidence and Treatments of Bovine Mastitis and Other Diseases on 37 Dairy Farms in Wisconsin.

The aim of this research was to describe the incidence and treatments of mastitis and other common bovine diseases using one year of retrospective observational data (n = 50,329 cow-lactations) obtained from herd management software of 37 large dairy farms in Wisconsin. Incidence rate (IR) was defined as the number of first cases of each disease divided by the number of lactations per farm. Clinical mastitis (CM) remains the most diagnosed disease of dairy cows. Across all herds, the mean IR (cases per 100 cow-lactations) was 24.4 for clinical mastitis, 14.5 for foot disorders (FD), 11.2 for m

Migraine and other headache disorders in pregnancy.

Migraine prevalence is three times higher in women than in men during fertile years, which is mainly due to sex hormone differences. The majority of women suffering from migraine without aura report improvement of their migraine attacks during pregnancy. Migraine attacks with aura can also improve during pregnancy, but more often remain the same or worsen. Anovulation caused by lactation is generally associated with a decrease in migraine attacks in breastfeeding women. This chapter describes the current knowledge on acute and prophylactic treatment options of migraine and other primary headac
