Gut Microbial Profile in Asymptomatic Gallstones.

There are few studies on the changes of gut microbiota in patients with gallstones, especially in patients with asymptomatic gallstones, and there are some deficiencies in these studies, for instance, the effects of metabolic factors on gut microbiota are not considered. Here, we selected 30 asymptomatic gallstone patients from the survey population, and 30 controls according to the age and BMI index matching principle. The 16SrDNA technology was used to detect and compare the structural differences in the gut microbiota between the two groups. Compared with healthy controls, the abundance of

The Microbiota and Cancer Cachexia.

Cancer cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome defined by weight loss, muscle wasting, and systemic inflammation. It affects the majority of patients with advanced cancer and is associated with poor treatment response, early mortality and decreased quality of life. The microbiota has been implicated in cancer cachexia through pathways of systemic inflammation, gut barrier dysfunction and muscle wasting. The imbalance of the microbiota, known as dysbiosis, has been shown to influence cancer cachexia. Bacteria that play beneficial and detrimental roles in the disease pathogenesis have been identif

Auricularia auriculaPolysaccharides Exert Anti-inflammatory Effects in Hepatic Fibrosis by the Gut-Liver Axis and Enhancing SCFA Metabolism.

Auricularia auricula, esteemed in Chinese culture for their culinary and medicinal properties, exhibits notable metabolic and immunomodulatory effects. The principal active constituents are indigestible fermentable polysaccharides, which not only exhibit anti-inflammatory activities but also facilitate the proliferation of beneficial gut microbiota. However, the influence of gut-derived components on liver-regulated metabolic products remains insufficiently understood. This item offers insights into the therapeutic potential of wood ear mushrooms for treating hepatic fibrosis and the associate

Integrative multi-omics identifies coordinated alterations in the gut microbiome and in plasma and aqueous humor metabolomes in high myopic cataract.

Growing evidence suggests that chronic inflammation contributes to the development of myopia, but the biological link between systemic processes and ocular changes remains poorly understood. In this study, we explored the gut-retina axis using a multi-omics approach in patients with high myopic cataract (HMC) compared with age-related cataract (ARC) controls. Fecal 16S rDNA sequencing revealed distinct microbial signatures in HMC, notably the enrichment of Lactobacillales and depletion of Roseburia, taxa associated with systemic inflammatory status. Metabolomic profiling of plasma and aqueous

The Role of Lactic Acid Bacteria in Colon Cancer Mitigation: Insights into Mechanisms of Action.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have garnered significant attention for their potential role in mitigating cancer through various mechanisms of action, such as immunoregulation. The LAB, primarily from the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, contribute to gut health by maintaining microbial balance, enhancing gut barrier function, and producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Colon cancer and colorectal cancer are some of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, with their incidence rising in many parts of the world. This review explores the ecology and the con

Fermentation of plant-based foods: Microbial consortia and their impacts on composition, sensory quality, and health benefits of food products.

Fermented plant-based foods have obtained growing interests for their improved nutrition profile, enhanced flavor and taste, as well as their health-promoting properties. Fermentation using lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts can eliminate antinutritional components and off-flavor compounds present in plant matrices while also generating beneficial metabolites. The interaction between fermentative microbes and plant substrates is dependent on plant matrices, microbial strains, and processing conditions. Accumulating evidence indicates that fermentation modifies the generation, degradation, a

SOD mimics delivered to the gut using lactic acid bacteria mitigate the colitis symptoms in a mouse model of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which include Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, represent a global health issue as a prevalence of 1% is expected in the western world by the end of this decade. These diseases are associated with a high oxidative stress that induces inflammatory pathways and severely damages gut tissues. IBD patients suffer from antioxidant defenses weakening, through, for instance, an impaired activity of superoxide dismutases (SOD)-that catalyze the dismutation of superoxide-or other endogenous antioxidant enzymes including catalase and glutathione peroxidase. Research progress in the use of lactic acid bacteria as natural biopreservatives against Pseudomonas spp. in meat and meat products: A review.

Meat and meat products represent excellent sources of key nutrients for human health, such as protein, essential amino acids, B vitamins, and minerals. However, they are recognized as highly perishable foods since they represent an ideal substrate for the growth of spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms. Meat spoilage is a complex process that involves multiple microorganisms and a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic ecological factors. One of the most common causative agents of meat spoilage is represented by species of the genus Pseudomonas. To prevent the development of such undesired mi
