Ingestion of Lactobacillus intestinalis and Lactobacillus reuteri causes depression- and anhedonia-like phenotypes in antibiotic-treated mice via the vagus nerve.

BACKGROUND: The brain-gut-microbiota axis plays a role in the pathogenesis of stress-related disorders such as depression. In this study, we examined the effects of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in mice with antibiotic-treated microbiota depletion. METHODS: The fecal microbiota was obtained from mice subjected to chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) and control (no CSDS) mice. FMT from these two groups was performed to antibiotic-treated mice. 16S rRNA analysis was performed to examine the composition of gut microbiota. Furthermore, the effects of subdiaphragmatic vagotomy in depressi

Oral Administration of Lactobacillus helveticus LA401 and Lactobacillus gasseri LA806 Combination Attenuates Oesophageal and Gastrointestinal Candidiasis and Consequent Gut Inflammation in Mice.

Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen that causes mucosal gastrointestinal (GI) candidiasis tightly associated with gut inflammatory status. The emergence of drug resistance, the side effects of currently available antifungals and the high frequency of recurrent candidiasis indicate that new and improved therapeutics are needed. Probiotics have been suggested as a useful alternative for the management of candidiasis. We demonstrated that oral administration of Lactobacillus gasseri LA806 alone or combined with Lactobacillus helveticus LA401 in Candida albicans-infected mice decrease th

Regulation divergences of Lactobacillus fermentum PCC and Lactobacillus paracasei 431 on penicillin-induced upper respiratory tract microbial dysbiosis in BALB/c mice.

Antibiotic-induced host health imbalance during upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) treatment is an emerging issue. Studies have confirmed that Lactobacillus casei 431 and Lactobacillus fermentum PCC alleviate gut microbiome dysbiosis and improve immune response. However, their effect on the upper respiratory tract (URT) microbial structure and the correlation between the URT microbiota and immunological indicators remain unclear. To evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus strains on restoring penicillin-induced imbalance in the URT microbiome and on immune response, Lactobacillus fermentum

Lactobacillus plantarum GKM3 and Lactobacillus paracasei GKS6 Supplementation Ameliorates Bone Loss in Ovariectomized Mice by Promoting Osteoblast Differentiation and Inhibiting Osteoclast Formation.

Osteoporosis, an imbalance in the bone-forming process mediated by osteoblasts and the bone-resorbing function mediated by osteoclasts, is a bone degenerative disease prevalent among the aged population. Due to deleterious side effects of currently available medications, probiotics as a potential treatment of osteoporosis is an appealing approach. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the beneficial effects of two novel Lactobacilli strain probiotics on bone health in ovariectomized (OVX) induced osteoporotic mice model and its underlying mechanisms. Moderate Dietary Lactobacillus acidophilus Supplementation Enhances Mid-Growth Nutrient Utilization and Shifts Intestinal Lactobacillus and Escherichia coli Counts in Yellow-Feathered Broilers.

This study tested the hypothesis that dietary L. acidophilus would improve nutrient utilization in yellow-feathered broilers mainly through intestinal changes rather than a consistent increase in growth performance. A total of 195 one-day-old broilers were assigned to a control group (basal diet), a T1 group (basal diet with 10 g/kg L. acidophilus), or a T2 group (basal diet with 15 g/kg L. acidophilus), with five replicates of 13 birds per treatment over 63 days. The biological responses followed a clear pattern. First, supplementation did not significantly affect average daily feed intake, a

Functional genomic analysis of the isolated potential probiotic Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. indicus TY-11 and its comparison with other Lactobacillus delbrueckii strains.

UNLABELLED: Probiotics refer to living microorganisms that exert a variety of beneficial effects on human health. On the contrary, they also can cause infection, produce toxins within the body, and transfer antibiotic-resistant genes to the other microorganisms in the digestive tract necessitating a comprehensive safety assessment. This study aimed to conduct functional genomic analysis and some relevant biochemical tests to uncover the probiotic potentials of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. indicus TY-11 isolated from native yogurt in Bangladesh. We also performed transmission electron micro

Effects of a microbial treatment of Lactobacillus casei, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Lactobacillus plantarum on blueberry fruit quality, rhizosphere soil properties, and bacterial communities.

INTRODUCTION: Microbial amendments are increasingly used in sustainable crop production, but it remains unclear whether their application is accompanied by coordinated changes in fruit traits, rhizosphere soil conditions, and resident bacterial communities in blueberry cultivation. This study examined whether microbial culture treatment was associated with concurrent changes in blueberry fruit performance, rhizosphere soil chemical properties, and bacterial community characteristics. METHODS: Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. cv. Duke) plants receiving no microbial treatment (NT) we

Lactobacillus derived small RNAs protect against Klebsiella pneumoniae infection.

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) is a major multidrug-resistant pathogen with limited treatment options. Plant-derived natural products have broad biological activities, but their protective effects against extraintestinal multidrug-resistant bacterial infections remain poorly understood. Herein, we show that selected plant-derived natural products protect mice against CRKP pulmonary infection by remodeling the gut microbiota. Fecal microbiota transplantation and microbiota-depletion experiments demonstrated that this protection was microbiota dependent, with Lactobacillus eme

Intestinal Lactobacillus: Origins, colonization factors, diversity, and health associations.

Genus Lactobacillus is one of the most widely acknowledged probiotics, already detectable in maternal breast milk and in maternal and infant feces. Its gut colonization is governed by host genetics, diet, drugs, and other environmental pressures. Accumulating evidences links the relative abundance or specific species of this genus to health outcomes spanning infancy to adulthood. Exhibiting extensive species-level and phylogenetic diversity, Lactobacilli possess typical probiotic characteristics including modulate the gut microbiota, production beneficial metabolites, and anti-inflammatory, im

Strain-resolved biology of Lactobacillus johnsonii across host systems.

Lactobacillus johnsonii is widely described as a probiotic species, but current evidence supports a strain-resolved view. Its biological effects depend on strain background, host niche, diet, challenge context and delivery format, including live cells, cell-derived structures and postbiotic fractions. This review synthesizes comparative genomic, mechanistic and intervention studies on L. johnsonii, using weaned piglets as the main translational reference because barrier injury, inflammation, microbial disruption, diarrhea and impaired growth often coincide after weaning. Piglet studies show th

Lactobacillus Taiwanensis Inhibits Gallstone Formation by Regulating Ileal Metabolism.

In recent years, gut microbiota has been recognized to participate in gallstone formation via the gut-liver axis, yet the specific changes and roles of ileal microbiota remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the effects of microbial communities in different digestive tract segments on the formation of gallstones and the underlying mechanisms. Six-week-old C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into a lithogenic diet group and a normal diet group. Ileal and colonic contents were collected separately for metagenomic sequencing. The Lactobacillus taiwanensis gavage model was constructed to co

Therapeutic Value of Lactobacillus gasseri 345A in Chronic Constipation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic constipation is a prevalent, burdensome gastrointestinal disorder whose etiology and pathophysiology remain poorly understood. Differences in the composition of the intestinal microbiota have been shown between constipated patients and healthy people. Data indicate that these microbial differences contribute to the disorder. METHODS: Preclinical studies in mice examined the effects of Lactobacillus gasseri on intestinal motility ex vivo, the reversal of motility inhibition by μ-opioid receptor agonists ex vivo and in vivo in mice, and the effects on capsaicin-stimulated tr

Amino acid utilization allows intestinal dominance of Lactobacillus amylovorus.

The mammalian intestine harbors heterogeneous distribution of microbes among which specific taxa (e.g. Lactobacillus) dominate across mammals. Deterministic factors such as nutrient availability and utilization may affect microbial distributions. Due to physiological complexity, mechanisms linking nutrient utilization and the dominance of key taxa remain unclear. Lactobacillus amylovorus is a predominant species in the small intestine of pigs. Employing a pig model, we found that the small intestine was dominated by Lactobacillus and particularly L. amylovorus, and enriched with peptide-bound

Vaginal Lactobacillus Impair Candida Dimorphic Switching and Biofilm Formation.

Lactobacillus spp. generally dominate the vaginal microbiota and prevent pathogen adhesion and overgrowth, including Candida spp., by various mechanisms. Although Candida spp. can be commensal, in certain conditions they can become pathogenic, causing vulvovaginal candidiasis. The insurgence of candidiasis is related to the expression of Candida virulence factors, including morphologic switching and biofilm formation. Germ tubes, pseudohyphae, and hyphae promote Candida tissue invasion, biofilms increase persistence and are often resistant to antifungals and host immune response. Here, we expl

Lactobacillus gasseri liver abscess and bacteremia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Lactobacillus is a genus of Gram-positive non-spore-forming rods usually found in the microbiota of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and female genitourinary tract. Also, they are commonly used in the food industry as supplements and probiotics. Lactobacilli are normally considered non-pathogenic to the human body, however, under certain circumstances such as immunosuppression, they can cause severe infections, with only a few cases of bacteremia, infective endocarditis, pneumonia, meningitis, and intra-abdominal infections reported. Among these presentations, a pyogenic li
