Analgesic and anti-hyperalgesic effects of epidural morphine in an equine LPS-induced acute synovitis model.

Epidural morphine is widely used in veterinary medicine, but there is no information about the anti-hyperalgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in acute inflammatory joint disease in horses. The analgesic, anti-hyperalgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of epidural morphine (100mg/animal or 0.17 ± 0.02 mg/kg) were therefore investigated in horses with acute synovitis. In a cross-over study, synovitis was induced in the talocrural joint by intra-articular lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The effect of epidural morphine was evaluated using physiological, kinematic and behavioural variables. Ranges of mo

Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis lameness in broiler chickens and its implications for welfare, meat safety, and quality: a review.

The exponential increase in global population continues to present an ongoing challenge for livestock producers worldwide to consistently provide a safe, high-quality, and affordable source of protein for consumers. In the last 50 years, the poultry industry has spearheaded this effort thanks to focused genetic and genomic selection for feed-efficient, high-yielding broilers. However, such intense selection for productive traits, along with conventional industry farming practices, has also presented the industry with a myriad of serious issues that negatively impacted animal health, welfare, a

Surgical repair of coxofemoral luxation in a horse.

A 4-year-old castrated male Miniature Horse was evaluated because of severe right hind limb lameness of 5 days' duration. The diagnosis of craniodorsal luxation of the right coxofemoral joint was made by physical examination and radiographic imaging. Closed reduction was attempted but was unsuccessful. Surgical reduction was successfully performed, using toggle pin, synthetic capsular reconstruction, and trochanteric transposition techniques. No postoperative complications were observed. Follow-up 26 months after surgery revealed no recurrence of the luxation and no evidence of lameness. These

[Cutaneous calcinosis of the footpads in a cat].

A case of cutaneous calcinosis of the footpads in a cat is described. The animal had developed lameness of one hindleg which was presumably due to infection by an abscess-like lesion of one pad. Histologically the lesion proved to be based on a cutaneous calcinosis. Shortly afterwards the animal died of uremia. Post mortem examination revealed fine granular shrinkage of the kidneys and signs of demineralisation of the skeleton accompanied by calcifications in the pads of all four paws, major arteries, hear, kidneys, lung and gastric mucosa. The clinical and morphological findings suggest a cut

Validation of an AI-assisted screening tool for lameness detection in dairy cattle: A field-based study for preventive herd health management.

Lameness is a major welfare and economic challenge in the dairy industry, requiring effective surveillance tools for herd-level management. While visual scoring is subjective and labor-intensive, Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers the potential for automated, objective monitoring. This study aimed to validate a field-deployable AI-assisted decision-support system as an epidemiological screening tool for the automated detection of gait abnormalities. We utilized custom-built bilateral hind-limb accelerometers on 134 cows across four diverse farm environments. The core AI algorithm employed a 1

Targeted antibiotic treatment of lame sheep with footrot using either oxytetracycline or gamithromycin.

A study on parenteral antibiotic treatment in sheep footrot was conducted on 10 farms in southern Germany to obtain information on the efficacy of gamithromycin under practical use conditions compared with a positive control. On each farm, 20 (10 on one farm) lame sheep were clinically evaluated and divided into two groups. On day 1, sheep were treated once according to group with either long-acting oxytetracycline (OTC) at 20 mg/kg bodyweight or gamithromycin at 6 mg/kg; clinical responses were assessed 21 days later. When compared with day 1, both treatments reduced clinical lameness, as ref

Effects of transdermal flunixin meglumine on experimentally induced lameness in adult dairy cattle.

Lameness is a common animal health condition with significant production and welfare implications. The transdermal formulation of flunixin meglumine is the only approved drug for pain control in cattle in the United States. Thirty adult dairy cows were enrolled in a study to determine the effect of transdermal flunixin on cattle with induced lameness. Cows were allocated to 1 of 3 treatment groups, with 10 cows per group: lameness and flunixin (L+F), lameness and placebo (L+P), or sham induction and placebo (S+P). An arthritis-synovitis was induced in the distal interphalangeal joint of the le

Analysis of genomes of bacterial isolates from lameness outbreaks in broilers.

We investigated lameness outbreaks at 3 commercial broiler farms in Arkansas. We isolated several distinct bacterial species from Bacterial Chondronecrosis with Osteomyelitis (BCO) lesions from these 3 farms. The results show that BCO-lameness pathogens on particular farms can differ significantly. We characterized genomes for isolates of the 2 most prevalent species, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Genomes assembled for E. coli isolates from all 3 farms were quite different between farms, and most similar to genomes from different geographical locations and hosts. The E. coli phyl
