Climate justice as a public health imperative: a perspective from Sierra Leone considering the 2025 International Court of Justice opinion.

Climate change poses an escalating threat to health, livelihoods, and economic development in Sierra Leone, a coastal, low-income country highly dependent on rain-fed agriculture for sustenance and revenue. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, floods, landslides, sea-level rise, and coastal erosion disrupt food systems and damage infrastructure, subsequently entrenching poverty, with projected gross domestic product losses of up to 10% by 2050. The health impacts fall disproportionately on children, adolescents and young people, pregnant women, the elderly, and the urban poor, including incr

Bridging the Awareness-Action Gap in Disaster Preparedness: A Qualitative Study of Immersive Virtual Reality Learning Among Nursing Students.

BACKGROUND: Disasters increasingly challenge healthcare systems, highlighting the need to strengthen preparedness among future healthcare professionals. Although disaster risk awareness is important, it does not consistently translate into preparedness behaviours, reflecting the awareness-action gap. Immersive virtual reality (VR) may enhance experiential disaster learning, but how it influences preparedness processes remains insufficiently understood, particularly in healthcare and critical care education. AIMS: To explore how immersive VR-based disaster simulations influence disaster risk p

Insights into heterogeneous streamflow generation processes and water contribution in forested headwaters.

Understanding how diverse headwater streams contribute water downstream is critical for accurate modeling of seasonal flow dynamics in larger systems. This study investigated how headwater catchments, with diverse subsurface storage, influence downstream flows within Lookout Creek-a 62 km2, 5th-order catchment in the rain-snow transition zone in western Oregon, USA. We analyzed one year of hydrometric and water stable isotope data collected at ten stream locations, complemented by a decade of precipitation isotopic data. As expected, isotopic data revealed that most of the streamflow was sourc

Modelling the future climate impacts on hydraulic infrastructure development in tropical (peri-)urban region: Case of Kigali, Rwanda.

The current global climate has shown a significant change, mostly resulting from human-induced activities. Frequent experiences of extreme rainstorms, deadly landslides, and floods followed by the destruction of roads, bridges, drainage, buildings, agriculture, and other infrastructures have been appearing across the globe along with extensive socio-economic effects including human lives losses whereby tropical Africa is among the greatly affected regions. Several studies in the region acclaim the increase of climate-related extremes due to a gradual climate variation. Hence, this study aimed

Autoimmune Diseases Following Environmental Disasters: A Narrative Review of the Literature.

Environmental disasters are extreme environmental processes such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, tsunamis, floods, cyclones, storms, wildfires and droughts that are the consequences of the climate crisis due to human intervention in the environment. Their effects on human health have alarmed the global scientific community. Among them, autoimmune diseases, a heterogeneous group of disorders, have increased dramatically in many parts of the world, likely as a result of changes in our exposure to environmental factors. However, only a limited number of studies have attempted to d

Fatal work injuries involving natural disasters, 1992-2006.

OBJECTIVE: Although a goal of disaster preparedness is to protect vulnerable populations from hazards, little research has explored the types of risks that workers face in their encounters with natural disasters. This study examines how workers are fatally injured in severe natural events. METHODS: A classification structure was created that identified the physical component of the disaster that led to the death and the pursuit of the worker as it relates to the disaster. Data on natural disasters from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries for the years 1992 through 2006 were analyzed. R

Implementing a climate-resilient and inclusive WASH guidance in Indonesia: A mixed-methods case study.

Climate change increasingly disrupts water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, disproportionately affecting women, children, people with disabilities, and groups with limited adaptive resources. Evidence remains limited on how WASH programs integrate climate resilience, equity, and social inclusion and on the conditions that enable benefits to reach households. Researchers examined how Climate Change Response for Inclusive WASH (CCRIW) guidance was implemented and adapted within routine programming in Indonesia, how implementation outcomes related to post-implementation household access,

Comprehensive risk mapping and management of rainfall-induced slope failures in urbanizing subtropical regions.

Geological disasters, such as landslides, collapses, and rockfalls, are significant hazards in humid subtropical regions, especially in rapidly urbanizing areas with intense monsoonal rainfall. This study focuses on Zhongxin Town in northern Guangdong, where fragile geomorphic conditions, exacerbated by urban expansion and human-modified slopes, heighten the risk of rainfall-induced slope failures. Using an integrated multi-parameter risk assessment framework, we combine unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) data, geographic information system (GIS)-based spatial modeling, field surveys, and hydromete

Detection of water-rich areas and seepage channels via the transient electromagnetic method, electrical resistivity tomography, and self-potential method.

Groundwater serves as a vital water resource for human society, yet it also plays a significant role in geological- and engineering-related hazards, such as landslides, tunnel collapses, and mining-related issues. Detecting water-rich zones and groundwater seepage pathways is essential for mitigating these risks. The Xiaogangou Coal Mine, located in a low- to mid-mountainous region at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang, China, contains multiple coal seams distributed at a depth of approximately 600 m. Surface infiltration from two rivers in the area has resulted in water-r

Reclassifying historical disasters: From single to multi-hazards.

Multi-hazard events, characterized by the simultaneous, cascading, or cumulative occurrence of multiple natural hazards, pose a significant threat to human lives and assets. This is primarily due to the cumulative and cascading effects arising from the interplay of various natural hazards across space and time. However, their identification is challenging, which is attributable to the complex nature of natural hazard interactions and the limited availability of multi-hazard observations. This study presents an approach for identifying multi-hazard events during the past 123 years (1900-2023) u

Comparison of total mercury and methylmercury cycling at five sites using the small watershed approach.

The small watershed approach is well-suited but underutilized in mercury research. We applied the small watershed approach to investigate total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) dynamics in streamwater at the five diverse forested headwater catchments of the US Geological Survey Water, Energy, and Biogeochemical Budgets (WEBB) program. At all sites, baseflow THg was generally less than 1ng L(-1) and MeHg was less than 0.2ng L(-1). THg and MeHg concentrations increased with streamflow, so export was primarily episodic. At three sites, THg and MeHg concentration and export were dominated by

Shear characteristics and shear strength model of rock mass structural planes.

Accurately determining the shear strength of structural planes is crucial for evaluating the stability of rock masses. The shear test using the sawtooth structural plane usually captures the main influencing factors of its shear characteristics. In this study, the two-dimensional particle flow code (PFC2D) numerical simulation method was used to conduct shear tests on the sawtooth structural planes of rock masses with undulant angles of 10°, 20°, and 30°, respectively. With the increase in normal stress and the undulant angle, the shear failure of the structural planes was found to no longer b
