International journal of language & communication disorders2021eng
BACKGROUND: A growing body of work shows that children with developmental language disorder (DLD) perform poorly on statistical word learning (SWL) tasks, consistent with the predictions of the Procedural Deficit Hypothesis that predicts that procedural memory is impaired in DLD. To date, however, SWL performance has not been compared across linguistically heterogeneous populations of children with DLD.
AIMS: To compare SWL performance in a group of age, sex and non-verbal IQ-matched Catalan-Spanish and English-speaking children with and without DLD.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: Two cohorts of chil

PURPOSE: This study examines the written language samples of fifth grade English learner (EL) students with and without diagnosed language-based learning disabilities (LLDs) in an effort to explore the utility of such supplemental materials for aiding in differential diagnosis of ELs with and without LLDs.
METHOD: This sample of 127 fifth grade students consisted of ELs without identified disabilities (n = 89) and ELs diagnosed with LLDs (n = 38). Written language samples from a classroom-based expository writing task were coded for grammaticality and specific verb type of errors. An analysis

Purpose This study aimed to assess a protocol for the evaluation of developmental language disorder (DLD) in language minority bilingual children (LMBC). The specific aims were (a) to test group differences, (b) to evaluate the discriminant validity of single measures included in the protocol, and (c) to define which model of combined variables had the best results in terms of efficacy and efficiency. Method Two groups of LMBC were involved, one with typical development (n = 35) selected from mainstream schools and one with DLD (n = 20). The study protocol included the collection of demographi

Policy change around dyslexia has accelerated in recent years, yet much of it still lags behind contemporary scientific understanding. Many statutes rely on categorical models that frame dyslexia as a fixed, phonological disorder and prescribe narrowly defined interventions. This commentary calls for a shift from policy proliferation to targeted refinement, advancing developmentally grounded, scientifically accurate legislation that is feasible to implement at scale. We identify three major areas of misalignment: definitions that fail to capture the multifactorial and language-based nature of

Previous research has established that children with developmental language disorder (DLD) have difficulties producing inflectional morphology, in particular, finiteness marking. However, other categories of inflectional morphology, such as possessive 's nominal inflection remain relatively unexplored. Analyses of the characteristics for marking inflection, such as allomorphic categories, may increase our understanding of patterns within disordered grammar to inform the design of interventions and target selection. Data from n = 30 early school-aged children (M = 75 months, SD = 3.38, range =

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects speech and language abilities. However, studies have shown that this disorder is widely connected to other aspects of development. We conducted an observational study on the relationship between early motor milestones and speech-language development in 4 to 6-year-old children with DLD. We studied 30 children diagnosed with DLD and 30 typically developed children. To assess early motor milestones, parents provided written responses regarding their children's age at which they reached crawling and walking milest

Bilingualism, plurilingualism respectively multilingualism can be associated with pathological deviations. Besides hereditary components, it can be observed that exogenic influences such as cerebral injuries etc, may render more difficult multilingualism or even prevent multilingualism. It is the task of the phoniatry to recognize and to deal with this problem. For example, the following situations were explained in terms of recognition, symptoms, and treatment of the communicational disease via multilingualism from the point of phoniatrical-logopaedical view: delayed speech and language devel

PURPOSE: Assessing early language skills through parental report is a cost-effective way to screen for language delays when resources are scarce. A pan-Arabic lexeme approach was tested by extending the Egyptian adaptation of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory (CDI) to Jordan and Palestine in infants aged 8-30 months (Arabic CDI Toddler). We also developed a version for children aged 30-48 months (Arabic CDI Child) in the three countries. A fair representation of the population in terms of geographical spread, maternal education, and environmental context was obtained thro

BACKGROUND: Difficulties in language development are related to social and emotional problems, lower academic outcomes, and lower quality of life from childhood to adolescence. These grave consequences might be significantly reduced by timely identification and professional support. The introduction of systematic screening for language delay (LD) in 3-year-old children in Hungary was based on the recent adaptation of the MacArthur-Bates CDI-III (HCDI-III).
AIMS: To explore the relevant psychometric properties of the HCDI-III; to identify factors characteristic of the families and children inf

The identification of developmental problems in a child's acquisition of speech, language and/or communication is a core activity in child surveillance. These are common difficulties with up to 15% of toddlers being 'late talkers' and 7% of children entering school with persisting impairments of their language development. These delays can confer disadvantages in the long term, adversely affecting language, cognition, academic attainment, behaviour and mental health. All children presenting with significant speech and language delay should be investigated with a comprehensive hearing assessmen

Little is known about the developmental trajectories in children who do not use canonical babbling (CB) at 10 months. The aim was to examine how speech, language, cognitive and motor abilities developed in children without CB. For 15 children identified as not having CB, consonant production, expressive vocabulary and general development were assessed at 12, 18 and 36 months from audio-video recordings. Twelve (79%) children still lacked CB at 12 months. At 18 months, six (40%) had parent-reported expressive vocabulary results below the 10th percentile, and two (14%) did not use dental/alveola

BACKGROUND: There is substantial evidence for the detrimental impact of preterm birth on language development compared to children born at term. However, little is known regarding speech sound development of preterm infants. Speech development precedes language development and requires investigation in its own right. A clear picture of the evidence for speech sound development in preterm-born children is important to enable clinical services in early identification and intervention for these children.
AIM: To understand the extent and type of evidence relating to typical and atypical speech s

Genetically defined neurodevelopmental syndromes provide a framework for examining constraints on language development. This study compared language performance in children and adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS; n = 40) and Down syndrome (DS; n = 40), matched for age and nonverbal cognitive ability, aged 6-16 years. Standardized assessments included the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals (CELF-5) and the BLOC-C to evaluate multiple receptive and expressive language domains. Group differences, effect sizes, and associations with age were analyzed to characterize sy

PURPOSE: It is widely acknowledged that parental input plays an important role in typical language development. Less is known about the input provided to children with (suspected) developmental language disorder (DLD) or those at risk for DLD. These children may not benefit from parental input in the same way as their typically developing peers, and different aspects of parental input may be more important for them. The present systematic literature review aimed to uncover (a) how parental input has been assessed in the context of DLD, (b) which aspects of parental input have been studied, and

PURPOSE: We aimed to create a comprehensive understanding of the dilemmas involved in the diagnosis of developmental language disorder (DLD) and to highlight the potential of a multidimensional spectral account of DLD for addressing these dilemmas.
METHOD: We conducted an integrative literature review.
CONCLUSIONS: Considerable gains in understanding the genetics and neurobiology of DLD provide new explanations for long-observed phenomena such as heterogeneity of presentation, phenotypic overlap with other neurodevelopmental conditions, and the challenges of diagnosis. Although categorical n

A battery of standardized language tests and control measures was administered to three groups of at-risk language learners - internationally adopted children, deaf children with cochlear implants, and children with specific language impairment - and to groups of second-language learners and typically developing monolingual children. All children were acquiring French, were matched on age, gender, and socioeconomic status, and were between age 5;0 and 7;3 at the time of testing. Differences between the at-risk and not-at-risk groups were evident in all domains of language testing. The children

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors aimed to examine the vocalizations of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the second year of life and their relationship to other areas of development.
METHOD: Vocalizations were examined in 125 children between ages 18 and 24 months: 50 later diagnosed with ASD, 25 with developmental delays (DD) in which ASD was ruled out, and 50 with typical development (TD). Precise measures of vocalizations were obtained through coding of video-recorded behavior samples from the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales Developmental Profile (Wetherby & Pri

PURPOSE: Language sampling analysis (LSA) plays an important role in evaluating language skills; hence, the study aimed to develop new assessment measures for the LSA in Turkish as alternatives to mean length of utterance (MLU) and the Language Assessment, Remediation and Screening Procedure. With this aim, Developmental Sentence Scoring (DSS) and the Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn) were adapted to Turkish.
METHOD: Eighty monolingual Turkish children were included in the study, and the age range was from 2;0 to 5;11 (years;months). The children were grouped with 6-month intervals, and each

In this article, we invite a rethinking of traditional perspectives of language in autism. We advocate a theoretical reappraisal that offers a corrective to the dominant and largely tacitly held view that language, in its essence, is a referential system and a reflection of the individual's cognition. Drawing on scholarship in Conversation Analysis and linguistic anthropology, we present a multidimensional view of language, showing how it also functions as interactional accomplishment, social action, and mode of experience. From such a multidimensional perspective, we revisit data presented by

PURPOSE: Children with specific language impairment (SLI) are underidentified, despite a robust literature on their language abilities and a clinical grammar marker. Adlof and Hogan (2019) call for school systems to assess oral language and provide supports through response to intervention (RTI), with the aim of identifying and supporting children with SLI and other language impairments. However, it is unknown how teachers make educational decisions for children with SLI.
METHOD: A web-based survey was distributed to public school teachers nationwide (N = 304). In this observational study, te
