Language Disorders due to Posterior System Strokes - An Ignored Dysfunction.

The anterior system is primarily responsible for the clinical picture in a patient that presents with clinical aphasia. However, recent reports have shown that injuries to posterior structures, the cerebellum in particular, may have a role in language processing. Herein, we will look first at the linguistic role of the cerebellum in light of the literature, then of the thalamus and some described clinical syndromes, and finally, specific syndromes resulting from occipital lobe lesions, all of which are supported by the posterior vascular system. The human brain is such a complex organization t

Morphology in autism spectrum disorders: local processing bias and language.

We conducted a detailed study of a case of linguistic talent in the context of autism spectrum disorder, specifically Asperger syndrome. I.A. displays language strengths at the level of morphology and syntax. Yet, despite this grammar advantage, processing of figurative language and inferencing based on context presents a problem for him. The morphology advantage for I.A. is consistent with the weak central coherence (WCC) account of autism. From this account, the presence of a local processing bias is evident in the ways in which autistic individuals solve common problems, such as assessing s

[Qualifying language disorders of schizophrenia through the speech therapists' assessment].

This study investigates a comprehensive assessment of language disorders in order to identify impaired and unaffected language abilities of individuals with schizophrenia. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to demonstrate the importance of the role of speech therapists in the treatment of schizophrenia. Speech therapy is especially thought to treat language disorders. However, to date, speech therapists have not been solicited in the treatment of schizophrenia, despite growing evidence supporting that schizophrenia is characterized by cognitive disorders such as impairments in memory,

Genetic influences on learning disabilities and speech and language disorders.

This paper is a comprehensive review of known examples of genetically influenced learning disabilities (LDs) and speech and language disorders (SLDs). The review is divided between 2 broad classes of studies: (a) those which begin with an LD or SLD phenotype that appears to be familial and attempt to learn more about the specifics of genetic transmission, if any; and (b) those which begin with a group of individuals, all of whom share a given documented genetic risk factor, to see if it leads to a specific LD or SLD. Included in the first category are familial dyslexia, stuttering, and other s

Disorders of language development, with particular reference to central deafness.

Many disorders may result in delay of language development. There is on the one hand a large group of children with bilateral peripheral deafness, most of whom will be amenable to appropriate treatment, and on the other a group, possibly more numerous, who have a variety of disorders of speech and language, varying from lack of speech associated with severe mental retardation to more specific defects, such as congenital dyslexia and developmental articulatory dyspraxia. These disorders are probably due to a defect of cerebral function at the highest level and in these children no-one will have

EXPRESS: Progress and perspectives on developmental language and reading disorders.

Why do some children learn to read or talk more easily than others? We review recent advances in genetics, neuroscience, cognition, and intervention research. About half of the variation in language and reading outcomes is explained by genetic differences. Yet genes and environments are intertwined - for example, children's early language exposure is partly shaped by their parents' genetically influenced traits. Neuroimaging studies show that language and reading disorders involve not only domain-specific brain regions but also subcortical systems supporting learning in general. In cognition,

Morphological skills among native Arab kindergarteners with developmental language disorders.

This study tested morphological skills among 14 native Arab kindergarteners with developmental language disorder (DLD) (age; 5.51 ± 0.95, 10 boys and 4 girls) and fifteen kindergarteners with typical language development (TD) (age; 5.49 ± 0.37, 7 boys and 8 girls). The participants completed two tasks designed to assess the identification and production of inflectional morphology skills in Arabic. In the identification task, the participants were asked to choose between two alternatives of pseudowords, the one that corresponds to a conventional inflection in the language, based on the instruct

Speech and Language Disorders Associated With 7q31 Deletions Implicating FOXP2.

Some 7q31 deletions encompass FOXP2, a gene long associated with speech and language disorders. Intragenic pathogenic FOXP2 variants cause FOXP2-related speech and language disorder, which has been well characterized in the literature. Conversely, the phenotype associated with 7q31 deletions is neglected. Here we characterize the phenotype of eight individuals (4 males) with 7q31 deletions (median age 4 years, 3 months, range 1-32 years). Deletion size ranged from 6.8 to 15.2 Mb. All had protracted speech and language milestones, and those with larger deletions had little to no speech. All ver

Genomic Insights Into Developmental Language Disorders: Biomarkers and Their Interactions.

BACKGROUND: Developmental language disorders (DLDs) are common neurodevelopmental conditions, affecting approximately 7-10% of children, with significant impacts on communication, academic achievement, and social integration. While genetic factors are known contributors, the underlying genomic architecture and biological pathways remain incompletely understood. This analysis explores key genomic biomarkers of DLD and investigates their functional interactions. METHODS: We conducted an integrative genomic analysis combining multiple data-driven approaches. Using the Open Targets platform, we c

Online content on eating disorders: a natural language processing study.

BACKGROUND: Online content can inform the personal risk of developing an eating disorder, and it can influence the time and motivation to seek treatment. Patients routinely seek information online, and access to information is crucial for both prevention and treatment. The primary aim of the current study was to quantify the readability scores of online content on eating disorders using natural language processing algorithms, across two languages: English and Italian. METHODS: Unique terms related to single diagnoses were searched using Google®. The content available on Wikipedia was also ass

What Language Disorders Reveal About the Mechanisms of Morphological Processing.

We addressed an understudied topic in the literature of language disorders, that is, processing of derivational morphology, a domain which requires integration of semantic and syntactic knowledge. Current psycholinguistic literature suggests that word processing involves morpheme recognition, which occurs immediately upon encountering a complex word. Subsequent processes take place in order to interpret the combination of stem and affix. We investigated the abilities of individuals with agrammatic (PPA-G) and logopenic (PPA-L) variants of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and individuals with

Defining language disorders in children and adolescents with Noonan Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Noonan Syndrome is a developmental disorder characterized by a distinctive phenotype including facial dysmorphism, webbed neck, short stature, heart defects, and variable cognitive deficits as major features. Over the years, neuropsychological and behavioral studies explored alteration of cognitive functioning and related domains, such as learning, memory, and attention. To our knowledge, however, data concerning the language profile in this disorder is scarce. The aim of the present study was to detect specific language functioning combining nonverbal intelligence quotient and lan

Developmental language disorders and risk of recidivism among young offenders.

BACKGROUND: Although factors such as adverse family background have been widely examined, little is known about the prevalence or potential impact of developmental language disorder (DLD) on risk of recidivism in young people with history of criminal justice system contact. METHODS: A total of 145 young offenders participated. An adversity score was constructed based on information found in youth justice service records. Data collected included standardised measures of expressive and receptive language, nonverbal IQ and the inventory of callous-unemotional traits. Survival analysis was perfor

Care course in children with Specific Language and Learning Disorders.

Specific language and learning disorders concern about 5 %l of the population and explain a significant proportion of educational difficulties and schoolfailure in France. If they are not recognized in time, they can lead to school exclusion if not illiteracy. Reference Centers for specific language and learning disorders were created in the 2000's and improved consis- tently diagnosis and management of such disorders but there remain many difficulties: appointment's delay in these centers, professional training, limited care access in some areas and financial support for specific checkups and
