Investigating parental views of involvement in pre-school speech and language therapy.

Today, speech and language therapists working with the pre-school population routinely involve parents in their children's treatment programmes. Also, there is increasing recognition of the importance of considering client and carer views in evaluating services. Thus, in both clinical and research terms, the role of parents is key. This paper reports an aspect of a study that investigated parents' views and perceptions of their pre-school children's speech and language difficulties and the speech and language therapy (SLT) they received. The methodology of the study was qualitative and data we

Note on ambient noise levels in head start speech-language therapy rooms.

Only one speech-language therapy room of ten at preschool Head Start centers met the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's (ASHA) requirements for ambient noise levels in educational settings. Preschoolers with speech-language disorders need ideal circumstances for therapy, which may be achieved through environmental changes or assistive listening devices.

South African undergraduate students' perceptions of clinical supervision in speech-language therapy.

BACKGROUND: Clinical training is a cornerstone of speech-language therapy education, bridging theory with practice. Effective clinical supervision is critical for developing students' competence, confidence and professional identity. However, there is limited research on students' perceptions of clinical supervision in resource-constrained settings, such as South Africa. OBJECTIVES: This study explored student speech-language therapists' perspectives on clinical supervision during placements, identifying both facilitators and barriers to practical learning, with the aim of informing improveme

Long-term dopaminergic therapy improves spoken language in de-novo Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The impact of dopaminergic medication on language in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains poorly understood. This observational, naturalistic study aimed to investigate the effects of long-term dopaminergic therapy on language performance in patients with de-novo PD based on a high-level linguistic analysis of natural spontaneous discourse. METHODS: A fairy-tale narration was recorded at baseline and a 12-month follow-up. The speech samples were automatically analyzed using six representative lexical and syntactic features based on automatic speech recognition and natur

Paradigms, pragmatism and possibilities: mixed-methods research in speech and language therapy.

BACKGROUND: After the decades of the so-called 'paradigm wars' in social science research methodology and the controversy about the relative place and value of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, 'paradigm peace' appears to have now been declared. This has come about as many researchers have begun to take a 'pragmatic' approach in the selection of research methodology, choosing the methodology best suited to answering the research question rather than conforming to a methodological orthodoxy. With the differences in the philosophical underpinnings of the two traditions set to

"It's not that bad but it's not so fun either"- A qualitative study on school-aged children's perceptions of speech and language therapy for developmental language disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Different studies have explored the experiences and perspectives of parents on developmental language disorders (DLD). Recently, different authors also called for more research hearing the children's voices. Unfortunately, this topic is under-researched. Therefore, this study investigated how school-aged Flemish children with DLD experience speech and language therapy for DLD. METHODS: Seven Flemish children with DLD, aged between 6 and 12 years, were included in this study. Child-friendly semi-structured interviews were conducted to investigate their perceptions of speech and l

Collaborative working with Parents of Children with DLD in Speech and Language Therapy: Identifying Dutch Speech and Language Therapists' barriers to enhancing practice.

BACKGROUND: Collaboration between Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) and parents is considered best practice for children with developmental disorders. However, such collaborative approach is not yet implemented in therapy for children with developmental language disorders (DLD) in the Netherlands. Improving Dutch SLTs' collaboration with parents requires insight in factors that influence the way SLTs work with parents. AIMS: To explore the specific beliefs of Dutch SLTs that influence how they collaborate with parents of children with DLD. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We conducted three onlin

Child speech, language and communication need re-examined in a public health context: a new direction for the speech and language therapy profession.

BACKGROUND: Historically speech and language therapy services for children have been framed within a rehabilitative framework with explicit assumptions made about providing therapy to individuals. While this is clearly important in many cases, we argue that this model needs revisiting for a number of reasons. First, our understanding of the nature of disability, and therefore communication disabilities, has changed over the past century. Second, there is an increasing understanding of the impact that the social gradient has on early communication difficulties. Finally, understanding how these

Performance of large language models as a source of clinical information on bacteriophage therapy.

Bacteriophage therapy is re-emerging as a potential strategy to address antimicrobial resistance, but standardized patient education materials are limited. Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for patient-facing medical information. The quality of LLM-generated responses to 20 patient-relevant questions was evaluated by 12 clinicians and research experts in bacteriophage therapy independently rated each response for accuracy, completeness, clarity, and tone/empathy using 5-point Likert scales. Expert suggestions for improvement were recorded. A total of 960 ratings were analyzed.

The role of Augmentative and Alternative Communication in Speech and Language Therapy: A mini review.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication is an aided or unaided means of communication which supports existing communication abilities of an individual or replaces natural speech due to any speech and language disorder. The deficit could be developmental or acquired such as autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, learning difficulties, dysarthria, dyspraxia or due to any acquired neurological condition such as aphasia and other degenerative disorders. Furthermore, it may be due to surgical procedures such as laryngectomy. Alternate means of communication have also been successfully used wi

Role of speech and language therapy in managing dysphagia and dysphonia in lung cancer.

A 75-year-old person was referred to speech and language therapy for voice rehabilitation following diagnosis of unilateral vocal cord palsy, secondary to relapsed non-small-cell lung cancer. On assessment, the patient presented with moderate-severe dysphonia. In addition, they presented with moderate pharyngeal stage dysphagia with risk of silent aspiration, which was successfully managed using a simple head turn strategy. This presentation is not atypical for patients who have disease in the upper chest or mediastinum and an increase in awareness and anticipation of such symptoms, with timel
