A Case of Myxoid Glioneuronal Tumor in the Lateral Ventricle.

Myxoid glioneuronal tumor is a newly included entity in the 2021 World Health Organization classification of central nervous system tumors, based on both pathological and molecular evidence, characterized by platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha mutations. A 23-year-old female presented with intermittent visual field abnormalities and dizziness. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 2-cm mass occupying both foramens of Monro, leading to non-communicating hydrocephalus. Endoscopic surgery via the transcortical approach achieved gross total resection of the tumor. Postoperatively, she de

Anaplastic hemangiopericytoma in the frontal horn of the lateral ventricle.

Intracranial hemangiopericytomas are uncommon tumors, and their intraventricular occurrence is even rarer. We report a 40-year-old man who presented with raised intracranial pressure. His MRI showed a 3.3 × 3.2 × 3.2 cm heterogeneously enhancing lesion in the left frontal horn obstructing the foramen of Monro and causing hydrocephalus. The tumor was excised through an anterior interhemispheric, transcallosal approach, and histopathology revealed an anaplastic hemangiopericytoma (World Health Organization grade III). To our knowledge this is the first report of this rare pathology being located

Atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor of the lateral ventricle.

Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RTs) are rare and highly malignant embryonal central nervous system neoplasms, usually seen in very young children with rapid fatal outcome despite aggressive treatment. They are most commonly located in the posterior fossa. Intraventricular location is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, only 4 cases of lateral ventricle location were reported in the literature. We report the fifth case of lateral ventricle AT/RT in a 2-month-old male who presented with rapid increase of his head circumference. Brain computed tomography scan and magnetic resonan

Cribriform neuroepithelial tumor arising in the lateral ventricle.

Cribriform neuroepithelial tumor (CRINET) is a recently recognized central nervous system neoplasm that arises in the ventricles of young children and is characterized by primitive, non-rhabdoid SMARCB1-deficient cells with prominent cribriform architecture. We report a 14-month-old male who presented with signs of increased intracranial pressure. Neuroimaging revealed a large solid and cystic mass in the lateral ventricle. Tumor cells were small, primitive appearing, and arranged in cribriform and trabecular patterns with interspersed solid cellular areas. Rhabdoid cells were absent. Immunohi

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the lateral ventricle in a pediatric patient.

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IP) is a benign process that most commonly occurs in the lung and orbit. Extension into the central nervous system is extremely rare, and primary intraventricular lesions of the lateral ventricles are even more infrequent with only 2 cases reported in pediatric patients to date. Here, the authors present an unusual case of IP occurring in a 16-year-old female presenting with a 2-week history of progressive headaches and vomiting, without focal neurological deficits or radiographic evidence of hydrocephalus. The patient underwent left parietal craniotomy and complete r

Schwannoma originating in lateral recess of the fourth ventricle.

Intracranial schwannomas most commonly occur in relation to vestibular nerves followed by trigeminal nerves. Authors describe a very unusual case of schwannomas originating in lateral recess of the fourth ventricle. Tumor was completely excised micro-surgically via midline suboccipital craniectomy and C1 laminectomy. Dissection of the surgical specimen revealed that the tumor was completely free from surrounding structures and just hanging in the fourth ventricle. It was not attached to any cranial nerves, brain parenchyma, and blood vessel or to the dura mater. Histopathological examination c

[Tumors of the lateral ventricle in child: characteristics and specificities].

Tumors of the lateral ventricle are not as rare in children as in adults and present complex problems which are to be dealt with often in a context of emergency, on account of their large size and the risk of life-threatening bleeding in a small child. Their diagnostic features are different in children, especially in infants and even more so in the fetus. The main surgical problems are the risk of bleeding and of hydraulic complications. From an oncological perspective, the main tumor types are choroid plexus tumors, subependymal giant-cell astrocytoma, and low-grade gliomas. The developmenta

[Tumors of the lateral ventricle. Review of 284 cases].

UNLABELLED: The data from 284 cases of lateral ventricle (VL) tumors treated in 18 departments of Neurosurgery in France between 1995 and 2010 were collected in this series. The mean age was 33 years with a large proportion of children (79/284). CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The mean duration of symptoms was short in time (2 months). The revelation was incidental in 10% of the cases; for symptomatic lesions, raised intracranial pressure (ICP, due to hydrocephalus) and neuropsychological signs were the most frequent. Only one third of the patients had no CSF disorder. HISTOPATHOLOGY: The two most fr

Subependymoma in the lateral ventricle manifesting as intraventricular hemorrhage.

A 32-year-old man presented with subependymoma in the lateral ventricle causing intraventricular hemorrhage and manifesting as severe headache and disturbance of consciousness. Computed tomography on admission showed a massive intraventricular hemorrhage and acute obstructive hydrocephalus. Cerebral angiography revealed no abnormal findings. Emergency external ventricular drainage was performed, and his neurological deficits gradually improved. Magnetic resonance imaging at 5 weeks after admission showed a tumor arising from the septum pellucidum or the floor of the right lateral ventricle, ap

Hemangiopericytoma in the trigone of the lateral ventricle--case report.

A 40-year-old male presented with hemangiopericytoma in the lateral ventricle manifesting as headaches persisting for 6 months associated with vomiting and visual obscurations for one month. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a large tumor in the trigone of the right lateral ventricle. The highly vascular tumor was completely excised. The histological diagnosis was hemangiopericytoma. Hemangiopericytoma is rarely located in the lateral ventricle and is difficult to differentiate from meningioma by neuroimaging methods.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor in the left lateral ventricle.

Extracortical location of dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) is rare. We present a case of DNT localized in the left lateral ventricle of a 21-year-old female patient. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a round mass lesion in the floor of the anterior horn of the left lateral ventricle. The lesion was hypointense on T (1)-weighted images and slightly hyperintense on T (2)-weighted images without contrast enhancement. Total removal of the yellowish-white colored soft tumor was performed through a transcallosal approach. Histologically, the tumor was of simple type of DNT t

[Symptomatic subependymoma of the lateral ventricle in a young female].

We present a case of a symptomatic subependymoma (SE) in a young. The patient was a 20-year-old female who suffered from severe headache and vomiting. Precontrast CT scans revealed a large spotty-calcified isodensity mass lesion in the right anterior lateral ventricle, showing scarce contrast enhancement at the center of the mass and with marked hydrocephalus. MRI demonstrated the lesion as slightly hypo-intensity on T1-weighted image, hyper-intensity on T2-weighted image. On FLAIR imaging, the lesion indicated remarkable hyperintensity and was clearly distinguishable from surrounding brain pa

Mixed ependymoma-neuroendocrine tumor of the lateral ventricle.

A histologically unique glioneuronal neoplasm occupying the lateral ventricle of a child was immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally characterized. Its principal component exhibited the characteristic features of ependymoma, whereas a minor population of neuroendocrine cells, occurring singly and in small clusters, lay scattered throughout the ependymoma component. Yet another unusual finding was the presence of numerous elastic fibers within the extracellular matrix. This tumor is considered to represent a true mixed neoplasm consisting of ependymal and neuroendocrine elements.

Meningiomas of the lateral ventricle. Report on six cases.

In this study 6 patients who had meningioma of the lateral ventricle are reviewed. The incidence is 1.8% of cases of meningiomas in our series. Microsurgical techniques were employed in all patients. There was no death and the follow-up period was between 5 months and 10 years. No recurrence was seen. Although the origin of these tumors is still not known, DUNN and KERNOHAN note that the choroid plexus has the potential for the production of meningothelial, fibrous, or mixed patterns. Our pathological results confirmed this suggestion.

[Otogenic brain abscess with rupture into the lateral ventricle].

We present a case of otogenic abscess of the brain that ruptured into the ipsilateral cerebral ventricle. All the diagnostic, surgical and postoperative procedures which led not only to saving this patient but also his complete recovery are described. Because there is a great difference between rupture of a cerebral abscess into a ventricle and rupture of the ventricle into an abscess, particularly with reference to the prognosis, the pathology of the two different complications is reviewed, based on the literature.

[A case of subependymoma in the lateral ventricle with intraventricular hemorrhage].

Subarachnoid hemorrhage attributable to brain tumor, particularly due to benign tumor, is not common. A case of subependymoma in the lateral ventricle, which manifested itself with an episode of subarachnoid hemorrhage was reported. A 33-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of severe headache and transient loss of consciousness, but neurological examination revealed no abnormality except for slight disturbance of consciousness and nuchal rigidity. Lumbar puncture showed an opening pressure over 350mmH2O and grossly bloody CSF. CT scan revealed an enhanced mass occupying the left

Lateral ventricle plexus papilloma and communicating hydrocephalus.

A choroid plexus papilloma was found in the right lateral ventricle of a five-month-old boy. Though it was associated with an important communicating hydrocephalus, it was seen at operation to be freely mobile and did not directly obstruct the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid. Computerized axial tomography was the most helpful para-clinical investigation for diagnostic purposes, and for follow-up study. Tumor removal alone was sufficient to cure the hydrocephalus, and no shunt was necessary. We feel that this case demonstrates that hyperproduction of CSF is sufficient alone to cause communicati
