Gestational syphilis and stillbirth in Latin America and the Caribbean.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the association between gestational syphilis and stillbirth in Latin America and the Caribbean. METHODS: In a retrospective study, data on stillbirth and gestational syphilis extracted from the Sistema Informático Perinatal database were analyzed for deliveries in 11 countries between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2012. Potential confounders were examined, and binary logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between gestational syphilis and stillbirth. RESULTS: Among 368 151 deliveries, 3875 (1.1%) were by women with a positive syphilis te

Causes of blindness and visual impairment in Latin America.

We review what is known in each country of the Latin American region with regards to blindness and visual impairment and make some comparisons to Hispanic populations in the United States. Prevalence of blindness varied from 1.1% in Argentina to 4.1% in Guatemala in people 50 years of age and older, with the major cause being cataract. Diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma are starting to make serious inroads, although epidemiological data are limited, and age-related macular degeneration is now a concern in some populations. Infectious diseases such as trachoma and onchocerciasis are quickly dimi

Nephrotoxicity of insect and spider venoms in Latin America.

One of the most important and lethal effects of animal venoms is nephrotoxicity. In Latin America, severe acute kidney injury has been reported after accidents with poisonous arthropods such as bees, caterpillars of the genus Lonomia, and spiders of the genus Loxosceles. In this article the characteristics of these venoms, their probable mechanisms of renal damage, and the clinical picture of the accidents are reviewed.

The health and economic impact of dengue in Latin America.

In the last two decades, all countries in the tropical regions of Latin America have experienced marked increases in the incidence of both classic dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever. Major risk factors for the occurrence of dengue in the region, as well as some regional peculiarities in its clinical expression, such as the extensive involvement of older age groups, have been defined. While little information exists on the economic impact of dengue in the region in terms of disease burden, the estimated loss associated with the disease is on the same order of magnitude as tuberculosis, sexuall

Professional Training of Sexologists in Latin America and the Caribbean.

INTRODUCTION: Since 1974, the World Health Organization has recommended the training of health and education professionals in sexology and sexual health. A wide range of studies and programs related to sexuality have been developed globally since the late 19th century, primarily in Europe. This movement also emerged in Latin America in the early 20th century and gradually strengthened in its second half. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study to explore and describe main characteristics of professional sexology training programs offered in Latin America and the Caribbean region. It is part

[Reflections on traditional medicine in Latin America and the Caribbean].

This dialogue seeks to problematize the relevance and implications of calling medicine the systems of knowledge and practices known as ancestral, complementary, natural, and traditional medicine in the context of Latin America and the Caribbean. The current reflection is based on reflective-analytical and constructive-interpretive methods and is guided by the philosophical paradigm of hermeneutics. A spectrum of pragmatic convergences with biomedicine is identified (integration into services and the search for evidence), but divergences in the conception of the relationship between body, healt

Critical pregnancy at altitude: A look at Latin America.

Critical pregnancy at high altitudes increases morbidity and mortality from 2500 m above sea level. In addition to altitude, there are other influential factors such as social inequalities, cultural, prehospital barriers, and lack the appropriate development of healthcare infrastructure. The most frequent causes of critical pregnancy leading to admission to Intensive Care Units are pregnancy hypertensive disorders (native residents seem to be more protected), hemorrhages and infection/sepsis. In Latin America, there are 32 Intensive Care Units above 2500 m above sea level. Arterial blood gases

The Crisis of Macrolide Resistance in Pneumococci in Latin America.

Macrolide antibiotics are recommended for the treatment of pneumococcal pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Prior to 2000, ∼10% of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated from IPD cases in Latin American countries were resistant to macrolides. The mechanism of resistance to macrolides was associated mainly with the efflux pump known as the macrolide efflux genetic assembly, since most pneumococcal strains carried the mef(A/E) gene, whereas <6% strains carried both the methylase gene ermB and mef(A/E). In the first decade of this century, a significant increase in the prevalenc

The landscape of vitiligo in Latin America: a call to action.

Vitiligo is a chronic pigmentary condition and severely impacts patient quality of life (QoL). It is an underrecognized burden for patients, healthcare systems, and society in Latin America (LA). This paper examines the journey of a vitiligo patient in LA and assesses the disease landscape. Americas Health Foundation (AHF) assembled a panel of six Argentine, Brazilian, Colombian, and Mexican vitiligo experts. On 10-12 May 2022, they met in a virtual meeting. Each panelist wrote a short paper on barriers to vitiligo diagnosis and treatment in LA before the meeting. AHF staff moderated as the pa

Overview on radiation and tissue banking in Latin America.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) played an important role in the establishment of new tissue banks and the improvement of already existing ones in Latin America. The Agency strongly supported, through regional, interregional and national technical cooperation projects, providing equipment, expert missions and training for the production and application of human tissues for transplantation. From 1999 to 2005 five regional courses were given in Buenos Aires under the modality of 1-year distance learning training courses and 1-week face to face courses. The courses were organized by

Periodontal disease in children and adolescents of Latin America.

Periodontal diseases are a group of infectious diseases that mainly include gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the most prevalent form of periodontal disease in subjects of all ages, including children and adolescents. Less frequent types of periodontal disease include aggressive periodontitis, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and various diseases of herpesviral and fungal origin. This review aimed to retrieve relevant information from Latin America on the prevalence of periodontal diseases among children and adolescents of the region. Gingivitis was detected in 35% of young La

Study of the scientific production on leishmaniasis in Latin America.

UNLABELLED: Leishmaniasis is a highly relevant neglected tropical disease. It has important consequences in affected populations, including a high fatality rate in its visceral form. It is present in Latin America, then it is necessary to promote more research on it. A bibliometric assessment of the Latin American scientific production in leishmaniasis was done. METHODS: Bibliometric study at SCI (1980-2013), MEDLINE/GOPUBMED (1802-2013), Scopus (1959-2013), SCIELO (2004-2013), LILACS (1980-2013). Antibiotic resistance in Latin America: a cause for alarm.

The burden of pneumococcal disease in Latin America is most pronounced in children aged <6 years. The increasing rate of resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae to penicillin and other antibiotics has generated concern among health authorities, since infection by antibiotic-resistant serotypes may be associated with increased mortality. Increased resistance is due to a number of factors including high antibiotic usage in this region. Vaccination with pneumococcal conjugate vaccines offers an effective approach to counter resistant disease due to covered serotypes. Existing surveillance systems

Vitamin A deficiency in Latin America and the Caribbean: an overview.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) has been known to exist in Latin America and the Caribbean since the mid-1960s; however, except for pioneering work by the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama/Pan American Health Organization on sugar fortification in Central America, there was little interest in controlling it because of the low frequency of clinical findings. More recently, implications of the effect of subclinical VAD on child health and survival has generated increased interest in assessing the problem and a greater commitment to controlling it. The information available by mid-1

[Health service coverage in Latin America and the Caribbean].

Since the 1970s the Member States of the World Health Organization have pledged themselves to the goal of "health for all" and to broadening the coverage, quality, and efficiency of the health care services they provide. In spite of that commitment, there has been little progress in the conceptual understanding and development of indicators to help evaluate the characteristics of the populations with and without coverage, as well as in knowing the relationship between coverage and the characteristics of health care services. Most of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are in the p

[Control of diarrheal diseases in Mexico and Latin America].

Oral rehydration therapy (ORT), has been considered the major advance in the treatment of the diarrheal diseases, and has been the single most important factor in the decrease of mortality and decreased morbidity in childhood diarrheal. ORT, is not limited to the administration of oral rehydration solution; it also includes feeding techniques and community education and participation. In order to promote ORT, national programs have been developed and promoted in educational centers in strategic areas of the Latin America countries, where medical and paramedical staff attend.
