Factors Contributing to Latina Intimate Partner Violence Survivors' Initial and Continued Engagement With Law Enforcement: A Qualitative Analysis.

This study explores barriers and facilitators to initial and continued engagement with law enforcement (LE) among Latina survivors of intimate partner violence. Semi-structured interviews with survivors (N = 40) were analyzed via qualitative case analysis. Participants with no LE engagement (n = 7) anticipated negative consequences and lacked encouragement to report from informal supports. Participants who contacted LE but disengaged (n = 18) experienced systemic hurdles to continued engagement, negative responses from LE, and personal risks. Participants who continued engagement (n = 15) rece

A cross-sectional study of stigma towards opioid users among rural law enforcement and community members in tennessee.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. opioid crisis, resulting in nearly 500,000 deaths from 1999 to 2019, has been exacerbated by persistent stigma, which hinders treatment and recovery efforts. This stigma, whether structural, social, or self-imposed, challenges overdose prevention and recovery. Our study aimed to assess and compare levels of stigma towards opioid users among rural law enforcement officers (LEOs) and community members in Tennessee, highlighting rural community-level attitudes. METHODS: Methods involved surveying two groups: LEOs (N=48) and community members (N=393). Utilizing a Likert Scale

More than tears: associations between exposure to chemical agents used by law enforcement and adverse reproductive health outcomes.

Despite routine law enforcement use of chemical agents for crowd control, the reproductive health safety profiles of these products are unknown. Moreover, limited evidence has documented a link between such exposures and adverse reproductive health outcomes including abnormal uterine bleeding and potential pregnancy disruption. This cross-sectional study examined reproductive outcomes in adults with uteri exposed to chemical agents used by law enforcement, more commonly known as "tear gas". Participants were recruited through social media in the wake of police violence protests. Of the 1,276 p

Effect of the Law Enforcement Duty Belt on Muscle Activation during Hip Hinging Movements in Young, Healthy Adults.

Sixty percent of all law enforcement officers (LEOs) experience low back pain (LBP), with the LEO duty belt (LEODB) commonly reported to be a contributing factor. The primary purpose of the study was to investigate the LEODB's effect on muscular activity and compare it to a tactical vest, which is a commonly used alternative to an LEODB. In total, 24 participants (13 male, 11 female; mass, 73.0 ± 11.1 kg; height, 169.0 ± 10.0 cm; age, 24.0 ± 5.8 years) completed a progressive series of hip hinge tasks in a single testing session. All participants completed four conditions (no belt, leather bel

Prevalence and socio-demographic correlates of law enforcement involvement among treatment-seeking adult males with opioid use disorder.

AIM: Use of various substances, including opioid use is often associated with coming in contact with the law- enforcement agencies. Data are scarce on the unique socio-demographic and clinical correlates from the Indian population. The current study aims to explore the clinical and socio-demographic correlations of law enforcement involvement among treatment-seeking adult males with opioid use disorder. METHOD: We screened adult males presenting for the treatment of opioid use disorder at the outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital in North India. We measured law enforcement involve

Physical Health Problems as a Late-Life Suicide Precipitant: Examination of Coroner/Medical Examiner and Law Enforcement Reports.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In light of high late-life suicide rates, we compared older suicide decedents with and without physical health problems as a suicide precipitant with respect to their clinical characteristics and suicide means. We also examined health-related concerns noted in summary coroner/medical examiner or law enforcement (CME/LE) reports. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The National Violent Death Reporting System, 2005-2014, provided data (N = 16,924 aged 65 or older). Quantitative data were analyzed using logistic regression models with physical health problems as a suicide pre

Forensic medical results and law enforcement actions following sexual assault: A comparison of child, adolescent and adult cases.

BACKGROUND: In sexual assault cases, little research has examined differences in forensic medical findings and law enforcement response by victim age across the entire age range. OBJECTIVE: This study addressed this gap by comparing four victim age groups: adults, adolescents over the age of consent, adolescents under the age of consent, and children under 12. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Cases were randomly sampled from a statewide database of medical reports on sexual assault examinations conducted in hospital emergency departments, including only cases reported to law enforcement (N = 563).

The association between law enforcement encounters and syringe sharing among IDUs on skid row: a mixed methods analysis.

The legal environment is one factor that influences injection drug users' (IDUs) risk for HIV and other bloodborne pathogens such as hepatitis C virus (HCV). We examined the association between law enforcement encounters (i.e., arrests and citations) and receptive syringe sharing among IDUs in the context of an intensified policing effort. We conducted a mixed methods analysis of 30 qualitative and 187 quantitative interviews with IDUs accessing services at a Los Angeles, CA syringe exchange program from 2008 to 2009. Qualitative findings illustrate concerns related to visibility, drug withdra

Co-occurrence of sleep disturbances and perceived stress in law enforcement personnel: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Police officers are exposed to chronic occupational stressors and circadian disruption, both of which are associated with impaired sleep and adverse psychological outcomes. Although prior studies have demonstrated an association between sleep disturbances and perceived stress, the magnitude of this relationship remain insufficiently synthesized. This study aimed to evaluate the association between sleep quality and perceived stress in law enforcement personnel. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according to PRISMA guidelines and the Cochrane Handbook. P

Crisis Intervention Team Mental Health Training for Law Enforcement Officers: Protocol for a Multi-Site, Randomized, Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Although diverse strategies to reduce police involvement in mental health crisis response are emerging, people with serious mental illnesses and/or those experiencing a mental health crisis routinely encounter police. Officers need training to safely and effectively interact in these situations. The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model is a collaborative approach that includes a 40-h training of officers who self-select to become CIT officers. Despite widespread adoption across thousands of U.S. communities, no randomized, controlled trial (RCT) has assessed CIT training's effective

How to Prevent Hostile Behaviors and Emotional Exhaustion among Law Enforcement Professionals: The Negative Spiral of Role Conflict.

The nature and characteristics of the current work environment of law enforcement professionals point out role-conflict situations as one of the main reasons leading to the occurrence of hostile behaviors and the worsening of employees' well-being. Precisely, this research analyzes the mediating role of role conflict between laissez-faire leadership and hostility or police professionals' emotional exhaustion. To mitigate the negative effects of role-conflict situations, the moderating role of certain personal resources such as self-efficacy, and organizational variables such as interactional j

The evaluation of a training course to enhance intellectual disability awareness amongst law enforcement officers: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Disability awareness training is mandated by the United Nations Convention on People with Disabilities (UNCRPD), but there is a paucity of evidence regarding the systematic evaluation of the effectiveness of such training. This study describes the evaluation of a pilot intellectual disability awareness programme for law enforcement officers (LEOs) in Ireland. METHODS: Pre-and post-training Likert scales and a semi-structured survey were used to evaluate the effectiveness of an intellectual disabilities awareness programme delivered to LEOs. Quantitative differences in Likert score

Synthetic Cannabinoid and Mitragynine Exposure of Law Enforcement Agents During the Raid of an Illegal Laboratory - Nevada, 2014.

Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs), commonly known by the street name "Spice," are designer drugs of abuse that mimic the psychoactive effects of marijuana. Intentional SC use has resulted in multiple toxicities (1,2), but little is known about occupational SC exposure. After a federal agency's law enforcement personnel in Nevada reported irritability and feeling "high" after raiding illegal SC laboratories and processing seized SCs, a request for a health hazard evaluation was made by the agency to CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in 2014 to evaluate agents' occup

Inaccurate trauma history due to fear of health care personnel involving law enforcement in children of noncitizen immigrants.

Two cases illustrating intentional withholding of information by noncitizen parents of children with major trauma are described. The difficulties and the results of not obtaining an accurate history in the initial assessment of accidental trauma victims are discussed. The core problem in these cases seems to be a fear of health care providers and a false perception that emergency medical services and emergency department personnel are extensions of law enforcement. These cases illustrate potential issues in managing the children of noncitizen immigrants.

Replication of the Police and Law Enforcement (PLE) Scale and extension to intersectional race/ethnicity and gender identity groupings.

OBJECTIVE: The Police and Law Enforcement (PLE) Scale assesses police-based discrimination and shows excellent psychometric properties among Black men. We posit that experiences with law enforcement vary at the intersection of race/ethnicity and gender and are linked to psychosocial outcomes. METHOD: Replicate the factor structure of the PLE Scale in an independent sample of Black men (n = 198) and extend the measure by testing its psychometric comparability among Black women (n = 193), Latina women (n = 209), White women (n = 186), Latino men (n = 203), and White men (n = 198). EMS Paramedics and Law Enforcement Officers' Experiences with Joint-Response Efforts on Suspected Opioid Overdose Calls: A Qualitative Study.

In the United States, the opioid crisis remains a nationwide public health emergency. Narcan laws have increased medical collaboration between emergency medical services (EMS) paramedics and law enforcement officers (LEOs), yet research on joint opioid-response efforts with these first responders remains underexplored. Using a phenomenological approach, this study explores EMS paramedics and LEOs' experiences with joint-response efforts on suspected opioid overdose calls amidst the ongoing opioid crisis. Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with 14 first responders (n = 8 EMS param
