Lithium Poisoning.

Lithium is a commonly prescribed treatment for bipolar affective disorder. However, treatment is complicated by lithium's narrow therapeutic index and the influence of kidney function, both of which increase the risk of toxicity. Therefore, careful attention to dosing, monitoring, and titration is required. The cause of lithium poisoning influences treatment and 3 patterns are described: acute, acute-on-chronic, and chronic. Chronic poisoning is the most common etiology, is usually unintentional, and results from lithium intake exceeding elimination. This is most commonly due to impaired kidne

Review of LC techniques for determination of methadone and its metabolite in the biological samples.

Methadone (MTD) is a synthetic analgesic drug used for treating opioid dependence and effectively used clinically for patients with severe pain. The abuse of MTD may lead to poisoning, disorder in the central nervous system and even death. The regular monitoring of MTD in biological matrices including serum, plasma and urine samples is an effective way to control abuse of MTD. In this manner, the selection of analytical monitoring of MTD in biological matrices is of paramount importance. This study was conducted to review high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) techniques carried out on

Some toxic effects of lead, other metals and antibacterial agents on the nervous system--animal experiment models.

Modern man is chronically exposed to lead levels in the biosphere, several times higher than the natural level that once existed. There is much concern about the possible adverse effects of this population-wide low-level lead exposure, particularly on the developing organism, where the central nervous system may be a primary target for lead. We have developed animal test systems which permit temporal and spatial discrimination of possible effects of lead and other potentially neurotoxic agents in the environment on the developing central nervous system, as well as on different types of periphe

Evaluation of lead levels in biological samples of mentally retarded children in different stages using advanced extraction method.

In present study the lead (Pb) levels has been assessed by analyzing the scalp hair and blood samples of mentally retarded/intellectual disabled (MR/ID) children of both genders, age ranged 3-8 years. For comparative purpose, healthy age matched children were also selected. The cloud point extraction of Pb from digested biological samples was carried out by complexed with ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate. The complexed analyte was subsequently isolated from the aqueous matrix in the micelles of a non-ionic surfactant (Triton X-114). Dilution of the surfactant-rich phase with acidified ethan

Dorchester Lead-Safe Yard project: a pilot program to demonstrate low-cost, on-site techniques to reduce exposure to lead-contaminated soil.

Despite a general reduction in blood lead levels in children after lead was banned in gasoline and paint, lead poisoning remains an important health problem in many older urban areas. One factor that increases risk in these places is the high levels of lead in certain residential areas. A major intervention study found that reducing lead levels in urban soils results in a reduction in exposed children's blood lead levels. Removing lead from inner-city soils or reducing exposures to lead-contaminated soils typically is expensive, technologically challenging, or beyond the ability of low-income

Environmental exposure to mercury and its toxicopathologic implications for public health.

Mercury is a toxic and hazardous metal that occurs naturally in the earth's crust. Natural phenomena such as erosion and volcanic eruptions, and anthropogenic activities like metal smelting and industrial production and use may lead to substantial contamination of the environment with mercury. Through consumption of mercury in food, the populations of many areas, particularly in the developing world, have been confronted with catastrophic outbreaks of mercury-induced diseases and mortality. Countries such as Japan, Iraq, Ghana, the Seychelles, and the Faroe Islands have faced such epidemics, w

Cadmium toxicity and treatment: An update.

Cadmium poisoning has been reported from many parts of the world. It is one of the global health problems that affect many organs and in some cases it can cause deaths annually. Long-term exposure to cadmium through air, water, soil, and food leads to cancer and organ system toxicity such as skeletal, urinary, reproductive, cardiovascular, central and peripheral nervous, and respiratory systems. Cadmium levels can be measured in the blood, urine, hair, nail and saliva samples. Patients with cadmium toxicity need gastrointestinal tract irrigation, supportive care, and chemical decontamination t

Ameliorative role of bioactive compounds against lead-induced neurotoxicity.

Lead (Pb) is an environmental toxin ubiquitously present in the human environment due to anthropogenic activities and industrialization. Lead can enter the human body through various sources and pathways, such as inhalation, ingestion and dermal contact, leading to detrimental health effects. The majority of lead that enters the body is removed by urine or feces; however, under chronic exposure conditions, lead is not efficient, as lead is absorbed and transferred to numerous organs, such as the brain, liver, kidney, muscles, and heart, and it is ultimately stored in mineralizing tissues such

Counteracting poisoning with chemical warfare nerve agents.

Phosphylation of the pivotal enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by nerve agents (NAs) leads to irreversible inhibition of the enzyme and accumulation of neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which induces cholinergic crisis, that is, overstimulation of muscarinic and nicotinic membrane receptors in the central and peripheral nervous system. In severe cases, subsequent desensitisation of the receptors results in hypoxia, vasodepression, and respiratory arrest, followed by death. Prompt action is therefore critical to improve the chances of victim's survival and recovery. Standard therapy of NA poison

Associations between prenatal cigarette smoke exposure and externalized behaviors at school age among Inuit children exposed to environmental contaminants.

BACKGROUND: Smoking during pregnancy is common among Inuit women from the Canadian Arctic. Yet prenatal cigarette smoke exposure (PCSE) is seen as a major risk factor for childhood behavior problems. Recent data also suggest that co-exposure to neurotoxic environmental contaminants can exacerbate the effects of PCSE on behavior. This study examined the association between PCSE and behavior at school age in a sample of Inuit children from Nunavik, Québec, where co-exposure to environmental contaminants is also an important issue. Interactions with lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg), two contaminants as

Lead neurotoxicity in experimental models: A systematic review on effects on the cerebrum, cerebellum, and hippocampus.

The extensive use of heavy metals, such as lead, has resulted in environmental damage and numerous health problems in many parts of the world. Reports indicate that lead is the most significant toxic heavy metal with adverse impacts on several body systems. Primarily, lead targets the nervous system and causes a variety of neurological, motor, and behavioral deficits in humans and laboratory animals. Although several reports demonstrate the toxicity of lead, there is a paucity of comprehensive and updated reviews to highlight various histopathological findings on the effects of lead and its me

Scorpion envenomation and inflammation: Beyond neurotoxic effects.

Scorpion envenomation results in a wide range of clinical manifestations that are mostly attributed to the activation of the autonomic nervous system by venom toxins. In fact, sympathetic and parasympathetic disturbances play important roles during poisoning. However, scorpion venom also induces a complex hyperinflammatory state that occurs parallel to systemic inflammatory response syndrome and acute sepsis. After a scorpion sting, innate immune cells are exposed to the venom molecules, which bind to pattern recognition receptors and activate pro-inflammatory pathways that contribute toward t

Cortical dopaminergic neurotransmission in rats intoxicated with lead during pregnancy. Nitric oxide and hydroxyl radicals formation involvement.

It is well established that low level Pb-exposure is associated with a wide range of cognitive and neurobehavioral dysfunctions in children. In fact, Pb-induced damage occurs preferentially in the prefrontal cerebral cortex, hippocampus and cerebellum - the anatomical sites which are crucial in modulating emotional response, memory and learning. Previously it was also shown that nitric oxide (NO) signaling pathway as well as glutamatergic neurotransmission are both involved in brain development, neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration processes whereas Pb(2+) interfere with both. For this reason w

Immunotoxic effects of inorganic lead on host resistance of mice with different circling behavior preferences.

We have observed differential immune responses in mice with different circling preferences, which are posited to reflect interindividual immune response differences influenced by brain laterality effects on neuroimmune circuits. In this study, we have investigated the influence of inorganic lead (Pb) and/or Listeria monocytogenes (LM) infection on the cytokine and corticosterone (CORT) levels of mice grouped by lateralized behavior. Pb increased the LM susceptibility of mice with both left (LC)- and right-circling (RC) preferences; however, Pb did not inhibit the host resistance of mice with n

[Biological function of some elements and their compounds. III. Zinc--component and activator of enzymes].

Zinc plays many basic metabolic functions in human organism as a co-enzymatic or activator about 80 enzymes. It participates in metabolic changes of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates. Zinc easily binds with nucleic acids with beneficial effect on active transport, protein biosynthesis, transcription, and mRNA synthesis. It is inevitable for proper functioning of the respiratory and reproductive systems. Zinc acts protectively in lead and cadmium poisoning and it participates in the elimination of free superoxide radicals (it inhibits of oxygenation of non-saturated fatty acids). It enables no

What ailed Goya?

At age 46, Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) suffered from a severe illness that lasted several months. It caused loss of vision and hearing, tinnitus, disorientation, weakness, abdominal distress, and general malaise. After a few months he recuperated but was left deaf forever. In addition to the physical effects, his emotional health and artwork were affected. The precise cause of this illness has long been debated. One early, but unlikely, hypothesis was that he had syphilis. Later conjectures have included Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease and lead toxicity. Cogan's syndrome and vasculitis are addi

Lead intoxication in an anuric patient: management by intraperitoneal EDTA.

Treatment of lead intoxication with intravenous ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) depends on the urinary excretion of chelated lead. This route of excretion was absent in a 48-year-old patient with childhood lead exposure and end stage renal failure who developed encephalopathy and a rapidly progressive neuropathy thought to be due to acute lead intoxication. Diagnosis was confirmed by lead chelation with EDTA and neurophysiological studies. EDTA was added by the patient to her chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) fluid each week and chelated lead excreted in the dialysate. In
