Lemierre Syndrome (LS) is a rare infectious condition characterized by septic thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and septic embolization, mainly caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum. Diagnostic Imaging plays a key role in the early diagnosis and follow-up of the syndrome. This article reviews the available literature on radiology applied in LS and analyzes a pediatric clinical case that highlights the importance of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for identifying retropharyngeal abscesses and jugular thrombosis. The case involves a 2-month-old child diagnosed w

A previously healthy 28-year-old woman who developed pharyngeal, pulmonary, and ocular manifestations due to Lemierre's syndrome is reported. High-grade fever, severe sore throat, neck pain, and diarrhea were the initial symptoms. Worsening of these symptoms following oral azithromycin therapy prompted the patient to present to our hospital's emergency department. Physical examination, chest X-ray, blood tests, and contrast-enhanced CT scans of the neck and chest revealed enlargement of the left palatine tonsil, thrombosis of the left internal jugular vein, multiple enlarged left cervical lymp

Lemierre's syndrome, or postanginal sepsis, is an uncommon but potentially fatal infection of the internal jugular vein. The combination of bacteremia, internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis, and metastatic septic emboli secondary to acute pharyngeal infections is characteristic of Lemierre's syndrome. Isolated pathogens are typically oral anaerobic bacteria, most commonly Fusobacterium necrophorum. While the incidence of Lemierre's syndrome has declined over the years, the proportion of cases caused by uncommonly implicated bacteria have been increasingly cited in the literature (1). In this

Patients with Lemierre's syndrome may have complications such as lung lesions, large joint arthritis and central nervous system involvement. However, complications involving a pterygoid abscess have scarcely been reported. Here, we report a case of bilateral Lemierre's syndrome accompanied with an intracranial epidural abscess and bilateral pterygoid abscesses. A woman in her 70s presented to the emergency room with a decreased level of consciousness. Infection was suspected, and Slackia exigua and species of Fusobacterium were identified in blood cultures, which suggested that the origin of i

A 64-year-old woman was transported to the emergency room with a headache and fever. She presented with a right ocular protrusion, hyperemia, and tenderness in the neck. Contrast-enhanced MRI of the head showed a high DWI signal in the bilateral sphenoid sinuses and contrast defects along the bilateral internal jugular and superior ophthalmic veins. Blood and CSF cultures revealed Streptococcus milleri group. Surgery was performed for Lemierre's syndrome secondary to sphenoid sinusitis. The patient was treated with antibiotics and anticoagulant therapy, but a duodenal ulcer and brain abscess t

Lemierre's syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and is caused by gram-negative anaerobes, primarily Fusobacterium necrophorum. We report a case of a 20-year-old man who developed chronic osteomyelitis of the femur and myonecrosis of thigh muscles secondary to this syndrome. The diagnosis was made based on clinical presentation and evidence of thrombosis in the internal jugular vein on ultrasound. The patient was initially treated with antibiotics, and anticoagulants were added later due to deep vein thrombosis in the lower limb.

Lemierre's syndrome is a very rare but potentially fatal condition. It mainly affects adolescents and young adult males, and usually arises as a serious complication of pharyngitis or peritonsillar abscess. It is characterised by the triad of internal jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis, septic emboli (mostly pulmonary) and the isolation of the agent 'Fusobacterium necrophorum' in sterile fluids. In this report, it is described a case in which the nonspecific and subtle clinic made the diagnosis difficult to reach. In fact, only the dissociation between flu-like symptoms and the presence of s

Lemierre's syndrome, also known as post-anginal septicemia or necrobacillosis, is characterized by bacteremia, internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis, and metastatic septic emboli secondary to acute pharyngeal infections. Modern physicians have "forgotten" this disease. The most common causative agent of Lemierre's syndrome is Fusobacterium necrophorum, followed by Fusobacterium nucleatum and anaerobic bacteria such as streptococci, staphylococci, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The causative focus mostly originated from pharyngitis or tonsillitis, accounting for over 85% of the cases of Lemierre's

We report the case of an 18-year-old woman who was referred to our outpatient clinic because of a 2-week history of sore throat, high fever, and neck tenderness unresponsive to a 7-day amoxicillin/clavulanic acid course. Infectious mononucleosis was initially suspected, but an extremely high value of procalcitonin and clinical deterioration suggested a bacterial sepsis, prompting the patient admission to our internal medicine ward. Blood cultures were positive for Fusobacterium necrophorum. CT scan detected a parapharyngeal abscess, a right internal jugular vein thrombosis, and multiple bilate

This is a systematic review of cases with Lemierre's syndrome (LS) in the past 5 years. LS is characterized by sepsis often evolving after a sore throat or tonsillitis and then complicated by various septic emboli and thrombosis of the internal jugular vein. Symptoms include sepsis, pain, and/or swelling in the throat or neck, as well as respiratory symptoms. Laboratory findings show elevated infectious parameters and radiological findings show thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and emboli in the lungs or other organs. The syndrome is often associated with an infection with Fusobacterium

Lemierre's syndrome (LS), described in detail in 1936, used to be a life-threatening entity until the advent of antibiotics. Tonsillitis or pharyngitis are the main primary infections and oropharyngeal anaerobic flora is the predominant etiology. However, other primary site infections, as well as other microbiological agents have been reported since the first description. Inflammatory symptoms in the neck and marked findings on physical examination predominate the majority of cases. Nonetheless, the authors report the case of a 54-year-old man with a history of dysphagia followed by cough, pur

Lemierre's syndrome is characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein that is complicated by metastatic infections. The disease usually presents after oropharyngeal infection. In rare cases, odontogenic infection has been implicated as culprit. Here, we report a case of Lemierre's syndrome that most likely developed secondary to toothpick usage. The patient had an uneventful recovery after the timely administration of the appropriate antibiotics.

Necrobacillosis, postanginal septicaemia or Lemierre's Syndrome is characterised by suppurative thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein with embolization to several sites, including the lungs. We report the case of a 38-year-old man who was initially hospitalized because of odontogenic cellulitis. Given the deterioration of his clinical state (septic shock and multiple organ failure), neck computed tomography was performed, revealing both cervical and parotid abscesses, and thrombosis of the right internal jugular vein. Streptococcus salivarius was isolated. The patient was treated with

Fusobacterium necrophorum plays a role in non-GAS-tonsillitis in adolescents and probably also in small children with recurrent otitis media. Anaerobic culture on selective anaerobic media is recommended to detect F. necrophorum and treat such patients. Denmark sees at least 20 annual cases of Lemierre's syndrome with a mortality reaching 9%. Early suspicion of Lemierre's syndrome in adolescents with non-GAS-tonsillitis, who develop septicaemia, pulmonary symptoms and unilateral swelling on the neck, is mandatory to lower morbidity and mortality.

Lemierre's syndrome is an uncommon condition characterized by post-anginal septicemia due to anaerobes. Reported here is a case of Lemierre's syndrome presenting with thyroid and liver abscesses. At presentation, the 70-year-old female patient complained of fever, jaundice and neck pain. Computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound confirmed the presence of a left-sided internal jugular vein thrombosis as well as abscesses in the left thyroid lobe and the right lobe of the liver with pleural effusion. The thyroid abscess was treated with a left lobectomy.

Lemierre's disease consists of suppurative thrombophlebitis of the IJV in the presence of oropharyngeal infection and can be complicated by septic pulmonary emboli. If a patient has an oropharyngeal or deep neck infection and neck pain suspicious for IJV thrombosis, a CT or MRI is warranted to establish the diagnosis. Blood cultures should be obtained to establish the responsible organism. In most cases F. necrophorum, an anaerobic bacterium, is responsible for the sepsis. Once the diagnosis of Lemierre's disease is made, long-term, high-dose intravenous antibiotics with beta-lactamase anaerob
