Teeth grow incrementally and preserve within them a record of that incremental growth in the form of microscopic growth lines. Studying dental development in extinct and extant primates, and its relationship to adult brain and body size as well as other life history and ecological parameters (e.g., diet, somatic growth rates, gestation length, age at weaning), holds the potential to yield unparalleled insights into the life history profiles of fossil primates. Here, we address the absolute pace of dental development in Megaladapis edwardsi, a giant extinct lemur of Madagascar. By examining the

Female social dominance characterizes many strepsirrhine primates endemic to Madagascar, but currently there is no comprehensive explanation for how or why female lemurs routinely dominate males. Reconstructing the evolutionary pressures that may have shaped female dominance depends on better understanding the mechanism of inheritance, variation in trait expression, and correlating variables. Indeed, relative to males, many female lemurs also display delayed puberty, size monomorphism, and 'masculinized' external genitalia. As in the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta), a species characterized by

The nuclear organization of the cholinergic, catecholaminergic, serotonergic and orexinergic systems in the brains of three species of strepsirrhine primates is presented. We aimed to investigate the nuclear complement of these neural systems in comparison to those of simian primates, megachiropterans and other mammalian species. The brains were coronally sectioned and immunohistochemically stained with antibodies against choline acetyltransferase, tyrosine hydroxylase, serotonin and orexin-A. The nuclei identified were identical among the strepsirrhine species investigated and identical to pr

The study of sleeping site selection in primates is fundamental to the development of appropriate conservation strategies. Here we present data on the characteristics and usage of sleeping sites of the northern sportive lemurs (Lepilemur septentrionalis) at Montagne des Français, Madagascar. The study was conducted on three individuals over a period of seven months from December 2018 to June 2019. The research objective is to describe the sleeping site characteristics and usage patterns of L. septentrionalis in the dry forest of Montagne des Français. The northern sportive lemurs in this study

Traditional socio-ecological models consider that folivorous primates experience limited feeding competition due to the low quality, high abundance, and even distribution of leaves. Evidence from several folivorous species that experience similar constraints to frugivores does not support this hypothesis. The sympatric lemur genera Avahi (Indriidae) and Lepilemur (Lepilemuridae) are good models to understand how food availability constrains folivores since they are both nocturnal, folivorous, and have a comparable body mass. Here we investigate how two nocturnal folivorous primates, Avahi meri

We describe the development of neurological signs in four juvenile black-and-white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegate), housed at a petting zoo in Japan. The clinical course was severe, with three lemurs dying within 1 day of the appearance of clinical signs. The other lemur was treated and survived. Pathological analyses demonstrated meningitis and the presence of gram-negative bacilli in the cerebrum, cerebellum, palatine tonsil and liver. Klebsiella pneumoniae was isolated from the brain of all of the dead lemurs. Multilocus sequence typing analysis showed that all the isolates were sequence

Social networks provide an established tool to implement heterogeneous contact structures in epidemiological models. Dynamic temporal changes in contact structure and ranging behaviour of wildlife may impact disease dynamics. A consensus has yet to emerge, however, concerning the conditions in which network dynamics impact model outcomes, as compared to static approximations that average contact rates over longer time periods. Furthermore, as many pathogens can be transmitted both environmentally and via close contact, it is important to investigate the relative influence of both transmission

Here we report a case of severe growth retardation and neurologic abnormalities in a female gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus), a small NHP species for which the genomic sequence recently became available. The female lemur we present here died on postnatal day 125. This lemur had impaired development of motor skills and showed severe ataxia and tremors. In addition, hearing seemed normal whereas ophthalmic examination revealed incipient bilateral cataracts, abnormal pigmentation in the lens of the left eye, and a missing optokinetic nystagmus, which indicated impaired vision. Most prominent

The potential role of Eulemur fulvus (brown lemur) in the epidemiology of Rift Valley fever (RVF) in Mayotte, during an interepidemic period, was explored. In February and March 2016, 72 animals were blood sampled and tested for RVF. No evidence of RVF genome or antibodies was found in the samples. The role of other wild mammals on the island should, however, be further investigated.

Taenia crassiceps, a cestode cycling between canids and rodents, poses a significant threat to zoo-kept primates, which are highly susceptible to severe cysticercosis. Fenbendazole is commonly used for treatment, though efficacy varies with lesion severity and localization of the disease-causing metacestode. In this study, T. crassiceps metacestodes, molecularly confirmed, were obtained from skin lesions collected from a Lemur catta that died at Zoo Salzburg. Parasites were cultured and treated with standard anthelmintics - albendazole, fenbendazole, mebendazole, and praziquantel - at 40 μM to

Parasite infestations depend on multiple host-related and environmental factors. In the case of ectoparasites, which are exposed to the environment beyond the host, an impact of climate, expressed by seasonal or yearly variations, can be expected. However, long-term dynamics of ectoparasite infestations are rarely studied in nonhuman primates. We investigated the yearly variations in ectoparasite infestations of two small primates, the gray (Microcebus murinus) and the golden-brown (Microcebus ravelobensis) mouse lemur. For a more comprehensive evaluation, we also analyzed the potential effect

Ten red ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra)-two adult females and their eight offspring-were evaluated in this case series. Two adult females were diagnosed with chronic, latent toxoplasmosis based on serologic testing. The first female lemur had two successive pregnancies. The first pregnancy resulted in transplacental transmission of Toxoplasma gondii. The only surviving offspring was diagnosed with congenital toxoplasmosis based on serologic testing and compatible ophthalmic lesions. The two deceased offspring had disseminated nonsuppurative inflammation and intralesional protozoal organisms cons

Play fighting is a commonly reported form of play that involves competitive interactions that generally do not escalate to serious fighting. Although in many species what are competed over are the body targets that are bitten or struck in serious fighting, for many others, the competition can be over other forms of contact, such as sex, social grooming, and predation. In primates, the most detailed studies have been of species such as Old World monkeys, that engage in play fighting that simulates serious fighting, but reports of a number of others, especially among nocturnal prosimians, have n

BACKGROUND: Far less is known about the normal anatomy of the nasal cavity of Eulemur fulvus; no computed tomography (CT) scan has ever been published.
METHODS: Relevant CT scans were taken in the transverse, dorsal and longitudinal planes. These scans were compared with anatomical sections of heads.
RESULTS: Computed tomography scans revealed almost all nasal structures, but cannot differentiate between the various layers of the nasal mucosa. Results show a double-scroll arrangement of the ventral nasal concha. The dorsal nasal concha protrudes into the maxillary sinus, but no protrusion in

Lemurs in captivity progressively accumulate iron deposits in a variety of organs (hemosiderosis) including duodenum, liver, and spleen throughout their lives. When excessive, the toxic effects of intracellular iron on parenchymal cells, particularly the liver, can result in clinical disease and death. The pathogenesis of excessive iron storage in these species has been attributed to dietary factors related to diets commonly fed in captivity. Tissue iron stores can be directly estimated by tissue biopsy and histologic examination, or quantitated by chemical analysis of biopsy tissue, However,

A 7-year-old female intact, black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata) presented for acute anorexia, lethargy, and abnormal behavior. Initial radiographs were concerning for gastrointestinal ileus. Abdominal ultrasonography identified bilateral periovarian masses and a moderate volume of echogenic peritoneal effusion; no definitive blood flow was seen within the masses on Color Doppler. Bilateral ovariectomy was performed, and histopathology confirmed bilateral ovarian hematomata and hemoabdomen due to an idiopathic arteriopathy. The patient recovered with no significant postoperative co

A thorough knowledge of biological variation in extant primates is imperative for interpreting variation, and for delineating species in primate biology and paleobiology. This is especially the case given the recent, rapid taxonomic expansion in many primate groups, notably among small-bodied nocturnal forms. Here we present data on dental, cranial, and pelage variation in a single-locality museum sample of mouse lemurs from Amboasary, Madagascar. To interpret these data, we include comparative information from other museum samples, and from a newly collected mouse lemur skeletal sample from t

This population-based, retrospective study examined the susceptibility of a prosimian primate, Coquerel's sifaka (Propithecus coquereli), to Cryptosporidium spp. over a 9-yr period from 1999 to 2007 at the Duke Lemur Center (DLC) located in Durham, North Carolina. The investigation examined potential epidemiologic risk factors that could be correlated to infectious outbreaks at the center, such as prevalence, signalment (species, age, and sex), seasonality of occurrence, recurrence rate, family lineage, parturition, clinical signs, and concurrent diseases or health conditions. Findings include
