Duration of use of a levonorgestrel IUS amongst nulliparous and adolescent women.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine devices are cost-effective if used for 2 or more years. Early discontinuation may lead to reduced cost-effectiveness of this method and unintended pregnancy if other contraceptives are not used. This study sought to examine rates and reasons for discontinuation of IUS use in adolescents versus older women and nulliparous versus parous women, as these groups may be more likely to discontinue use. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of women receiving a levonorgestrel IUS between June 2005 and April 2008 was conducted. Medical records were reviewed for all visits f

The role of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device in the management of symptomatic endometriosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this article is to evaluate the biological rationale for the use of an intrauterine device releasing 20 mug/day of levonorgestrel in women with endometriosis, and to assess its efficacy in relieving pelvic pain symptoms. RECENT FINDINGS: Levonorgestrel induces endometrial glandular atrophy and extensive decidual transformation of the stroma, downregulates endometrial cell proliferation, increases apoptotic activity, and has antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. Up to 85% of patients wearing the device have anovulatory cycles during the first 3 months of

Suture Fixation of Levonorgestrel-Releasing Device Using the Hysteroscopic Surgery System.

BACKGROUND: The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is a widely recognized method for contraception and the management of various gynecological conditions. However, the placement of LNG-IUS can be particularly challenging in patients with large or anatomically irregular uteri. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of hysteroscopic cold-knife-assisted suture fixation of the LNG-IUS in the uteri of patients diagnosed with adenomyosis. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients who underwent LNG-IUS placement with the assistance of

Levonorgestrel intrauterine device and depression: A Swedish register-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG-IUD) is traditionally viewed as a safe contraceptive with limited systemic effects. However, three recent studies have indicated an increased risk of depression subsequent to LNG-IUD use. This study aimed to examine the potential associated risk between LNG-IUDs and depression, and determine which women are at risk. METHODS: This longitudinal cohort study was based on data from seven Swedish national population-based registers. All Nordic-born women aged 15-24 years residing in Sweden between 2010 and 2017 were included. Cox regression w

Why perimenopausal women should consider to use a levonorgestrel intrauterine system.

OBJECTIVE: The use of a levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is useful in preventing pregnancy and for the treatment of menstrual disturbances. A smooth or symptom-free transition to and through menopause is possible when LNG-IUS is combined with estrogen therapy. Unfortunately the majority of physicians are generally unaware of this usefulness combined hormonal therapy in the pre-, peri- and postmenopausal women. DESIGN AND METHOD: Based on long-term clinical experience with LNG-IUS in the form of Femilis®, 104 women where followed from the premenopause through the menopausal transit

Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device (LNG-IUD) for symptomatic endometriosis following surgery.

BACKGROUND: Various options exist for treating endometriosis, including surgical, medical, such as ovarian suppression, or a combination of these strategies. Surgical treatment of endometriosis aims to remove visible areas of endometriosis. The aim of medical therapy is to inhibit growth of endometriotic implants by induction of a hypo-estrogenic state. Treatment with a hormone-releasing intrauterine device, using levonorgestrel (LNG-IUD), has also been suggested. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether postoperative LNG-IUD insertion in women with endometriosis improves pain and reduces recurrence
