Prevalence and risk factors associated with asymptomatic bacteriuria in diabetic postmenopausal women in Tripoli, Libya.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) is more widespread in postmenopausal women, especially among diabetic women. Nevertheless, a comprehensive definition of independent predictors of ASB in the general postmenopausal population and in the high-risk diabetic subgroup remains critical for management strategies. METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional examination of the prevalence of ASB and risk factors among 400 postmenopausal women (251 with diabetes, 149 without diabetes). Quantitative culture on midstream urine samples was done according to the standard microbiological practices. Str

The impact of trauma and daily hardships on the mental health of unaccompanied refugee minors detained in Libya.

BACKGROUND: The high trauma load and prevalence of mental distress in unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) who resettle in Western (European) countries is well documented. However, the lack of studies investigating the potentially most vulnerable population, URMs who are currently on the move in transit countries such as Libya, is alarming. AIMS: To document the mental health of URMs detained in Libya and the possible associations with trauma, flight and daily hardships. METHOD: In total n = 99 (94.9% male; n = 93) URMs participated in this cross-sectional study conducted in four detention ce

Giardia and Cryptosporidium in children with diarrhea, Kufra, Libya, a North African migration route city.

BACKGROUND: Giardia and Cryptosporidium are common parasitic diarrhea agents of children contributing to childhood morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Major risk factors, based on the international literature, are expected to include domestic animals, fresh vegetables and drinking water and foodstuffs purchased from street vendors. These factors and sub Saharan migrants are common in the study area. Reports elsewhere indicate that person-to-person transmission is also important. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence Cryptosporidium and Giardia in children with diarrhea in the Kufra

Coarse-resolution Ecology of Etiological Agent, Vector, and Reservoirs of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Libya.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis ranks among the tropical diseases least known and most neglected in Libya. World Health Organization reports recognized associations of Phlebotomus papatasi, Psammomys obesus, and Meriones spp., with transmission of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL; caused by Leishmania major) across Libya. Here, we map risk of ZCL infection based on occurrence records of L. major, P. papatasi, and four potential animal reservoirs (Meriones libycus, Meriones shawi, Psammomys obesus, and Gerbillus gerbillus). Ecological niche models identified limited risk areas for ZCL across the n

Anatomy of a foreseeable disaster: Lessons from the 2023 dam-breaching flood in Derna, Libya.

Was the catastrophic flooding in Derna, Libya-one of the deadliest hydrometeorological disasters on record-an inevitable outcome of rare weather conditions, or did the design of the infrastructure fail to account for probable risks? On 10 to 11 September 2023, Storm Daniel, a Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone, caused heavy rainfall that led to the collapse of two dams and more than 5000 casualties in Derna. Using a combination of atmospheric reanalysis, satellite data, and hydrologic modeling, we overcame key limitations typical of data-scarce, high-variability regions and revealed that desp

The potential distribution of Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Libya based on ecological niche model.

The increased cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis vectored by Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) in Libya have driven considerable effort to develop a predictive model for the potential geographical distribution of this disease. We collected adult P. papatasi from 17 sites in Musrata and Yefern regions of Libya using four different attraction traps. Our trap results and literature records describing the distribution of P. papatasi were incorporated into a MaxEnt algorithm prediction model that used 22 environmental variables. The model showed a high performance (AUC = 0.992 and 0.990 for training and
