The Euvichol story - Development and licensure of a safe, effective and affordable oral cholera vaccine through global public private partnerships.

Cholera, a diarrheal disease primarily affecting vulnerable populations in developing countries, is estimated to cause disease in more than 2.5 million people and kill almost 100,000 annually. An oral cholera vaccine (OCV) has been available globally since 2001; the demand for this vaccine from affected countries has however been very low, due to various factors including vaccine price and mode of administration. The low demand for the vaccine and limited commercial incentives to invest in research and development of vaccines for developing country markets has kept the global supply of OCVs do

Epidemiology of acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae before and after licensure of the 7-valent pneumococcal protein conjugate vaccine.

We studied, by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, multilocus sequence typing and penicillin-binding protein 2b amplicon-restriction profiles, pneumococcal isolates recovered from children with acute otitis media during 1 January-31 December 1999 and 2001. The proportion of nonvaccine serogroups increased from 14.8% (13/88) to 36.5% (23/63) from 1999 to 2001 (P<.01). Among children who received at least 2 doses of the pneumococcal 7-valent protein conjugate (PNC7) vaccine, 46.7% (7/15) of the isolates had nonvaccine serogroups, compared with 20.8% (26/125) of the isolates from children who did n

When can we identify the students at risk of failure in the national medical licensure examination in Japan using the predictive pass rate?

CONTEXT: Failure of students to pass the National Medical Licensure Examination (NMLE) is a major problem for universities and the health system in Japan. To assist students at risk for NMLE failure as early as possible after admission, this study investigated the time points (from the time of admission to graduation) at which predictive pass rate (PPR) can be used to identify students at risk of failing the NMLE. METHODS: Seven consecutive cohorts of medical students between 2012 and 2018 (n = 637) at the Gifu University Graduate School of Medicine were investigated. Using 7 variables before

Demonstrating vaccine effectiveness during a waning epidemic: A WHO/NIH meeting report on approaches to development and licensure of Zika vaccine candidates.

Since its peak in early 2016, the incidence of Zika virus (ZIKV) cases has declined to such low levels that Phase 3 field efficacy trials may be infeasible. While great progress was made to rapidly advance several vaccine candidates into Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials, in the absence of sustained viral transmission it may be difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of ZIKV vaccine candidates by conducting traditional clinical disease endpoint efficacy studies. However, ZIKV is still circulating at low levels in some areas and is likely to re-emerge in naïve populations or in sites of prior epide

Immune correlates of protection against influenza: challenges for licensure of seasonal and pandemic influenza vaccines, Miami, FL, USA, March 1-3, 2010.

The emergence of a novel swine-origin pandemic influenza virus in 2009, together with the continuing circulation of highly pathogenic avian H5N1 viruses and the urgent global need to produce effective vaccines against such public health threats, has prompted a renewed interest in improving our understanding of the immune correlates of protection against influenza. As new influenza vaccine technologies, including non-HA based approaches and novel production platforms are developed and undergo clinical evaluation, it has become clear that existing immune correlates such as serum hemagglutination

Safety of varicella vaccine after licensure in the United States: experience from reports to the vaccine adverse event reporting system, 1995-2005.

Widespread use of varicella vaccine in the United States could enable detection of rare adverse events not identified previously. We reviewed data from 1995 to 2005 from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, including data from laboratory analyses, to distinguish adverse events associated with wild-type varicella-zoster virus (VZV) versus those associated with vaccine strain. Almost 48 million doses of varicella vaccine were distributed between 1995 and 2005. There were 25,306 adverse events reported (52.7/100,000 doses distributed); 5.0% were classified as serious (2.6/100,000 doses dis

HazAPP: Study protocol of a randomized controlled trial to enhance parental instruction of teens' hazard anticipation skill during the learner phase of licensure.

BACKGROUND: Despite very low crash rates during the learner phase of supervised licensure, teen driver crash rates immediately spike at the onset of independent licensure. A large percentage of driving errors among newly licensed teens is attributed to a failure to recognize roadway hazards. Parents serve as the primary instructor of teens' driving under the learner phase of licensure, yet existing literature indicates that parents do not regularly engage in instruction on how to anticipate and respond to potential roadway hazards. The goal of the current randomized control trial, as reported
