Lignin-kappa-carrageenan cryogels and aerogels: Structure and swelling analysis.

Due to the abundance of lignin, its valorisation for the synthesis of various materials may be important from an environmental perspective. This work proposes the synthesis of porous carbon materials using sodium lignosulphonate and a polysaccharide with thermal transitions (kappa-carrageenan), assessing how the precursor's viscoelasticity and the drying process (supercritical CO2 or freeze-drying) can tune the properties of the obtained material. Rheological and infrared results indicate the formation of a network based on electrostatic interactions, leading to strong gels (G' over 100,000 Pa

Heterogeneously Catalyzed Reductive Depolymerization of Lignin to Value-Added Chemicals.

Lignin is an abundant renewable source of aromatics, but its complex heterogeneous structure poses challenges for its depolymerization and valorization. Heterogeneously catalyzed reductive depolymerization (HCRD) has emerged as a promising approach, utilizing heterogeneous catalysts to facilitate selective bond cleavage in lignin and hydrogen transfer to stabilize the products under mild conditions. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of the hydrogen transfer mechanisms in HCRD, involving different hydrogen sources, including molecular hydrogen, alcohols, formic acid, etc., and

Preparation and characterization of zwitterion-substituted lignin/Nafion composite membranes.

In this study, a novel zwitterion-substituted lignin (ZL) containing amino and sulfonic acid groups was synthesized, and ZL/Nafion composite membranes were fabricated as proton exchange membranes. Kraft lignin was modified using an aminosilane and 1,3-propanesultone via a continuous grafting reaction to provide zwitterionic moieties. Chemical structural analyses confirmed the successful introduction of the zwitterion moiety into lignin. In particular, the surface charge of ZL is positive in an acidic medium and negative in a basic medium, suggesting that ZL is a zwitterionic material. ZL was i

Aniline Derivatives from Lignin under Mild Conditions Enabled by Electrochemistry.

The development of environmentally friendly methods for the valorization of important phenolic platform chemicals originating directly from lignin-first depolymerization into value-added N-chemicals, such as aniline derivatives, is of high industrial interest. In this work, we tackle this challenging transformation by the judicious combination of electrochemical conversion and chemical functionalization steps. In the first step, lignin-derived para-substituted guaiacols and syringols undergo an atom-efficient, room-temperature anodic oxidation using methanol both as solvent and reagent towards

Lignin-carbohydrate complexes suppress SCA3 neurodegeneration via upregulating proteasomal activities.

Lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs) represent a group of macromolecules with diverse biological functions such as antioxidative properties. Polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases such as spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) comprise a set of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by the formation of polyQ protein aggregates in patient neurons. LCCs have been reported to prevent such protein aggregation. In this study, we identified a potential mechanism underlying the above anti-protein aggregation activity. We isolated and characterized multiple LCC fractions from bamboo and poplar and found that

Revisiting alkaline cupric oxide oxidation method for lignin structural analysis.

Lignin structural analysis is important for the comprehensive utilization of lignin as well as delignification and bleaching during pulping while it is difficult to completely elucidate lignin structure due to its structural complexity and heterogeneity. Depolymerization of lignin into simple monomers via alkaline cupric oxide oxidation (OxCuO) followed by chromatographic analysis of the monomers is an effective method for lignin structural analysis. Here we revisited the OxCuO of lignin model compounds (monomers and dimers) and three representative lignocelluloses (i.e., Eucalyptus, Masson pi

Smooth model surfaces from lignin derivatives. I. Preparation and characterization.

Lignin model surfaces were prepared from aqueous alkaline solutions by spin-coating on silica wafers. Films of thicknesses between 20 and 140 nm were easily made by variations in the spinning rate or in the lignin concentration. The roughnesses of the lignin surfaces were relatively low, approximately 1.1 nm (rms) on an area of 25 microm2, as determined by atomic force microscopy imaging. The stability of the lignin films in aqueous solutions was found to be excellent. No changes in the thickness of model surfaces immersed in slightly alkaline solutions (pH 9.2) could be detected even after 5

Induction of antiparasite activity by pine cone lignin-related substances.

Pretreatment with two distinct lignin-related antitumor substances extracted from pine cone of Pinus parviflora Sieb. et Zucc. protected infant mice from Hymenolepis nana (Cestoda) infection. Subcutaneous administration of these fractions (10 mg/kg) to 1 week old mice evoked strong protective immunity against oral infection by Hymenolepis nana eggs. Significant antiparasite effects were also induced in 4 week old mice by intraperitoneal or oral administration of these fractions. These fractions had more potent antiparasite activity than pine cone extracts with lower antitumor and antiviral act

State-of-the-art lignin depolymerization and its routes to microbial valorization.

Lignin, a major constituent of lignocellulosic biomass, represents an abundant yet underexploited renewable aromatic reservoir. Unlocking its value requires not only efficient depolymerization but also a clear understanding of how depolymerization routes interface with downstream bioconversion, which is a conceptual shift toward integrated depolymerization-to-valorization design. This review systematically evaluates state-of-the-art strategies for lignin depolymerization. Physical methods improve accessibility and structural disruption but often achieve effective bond cleavage only when couple

Electro-Biocatalytic Reactivity of Catecholamine at a Lignin Nanoparticle-Tyrosinase Interface.

The electrochemical sensing of similar catecholamines remains challenging due to their overlapping redox behavior and similar reactivity, which often results in poorly selective reaction pathways. Herein, we report a bioinspired tyrosinase electro-catalytic system that enables the modulation of the catecholamine reactivity through the integration of enzymatic oxidation with electrochemical transformation. The biocatalytic platform consisted of electroactive lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) supporting tyrosinase drop cast on the graphene-based screen-printed electrode. The overall reaction included

Minimal enzyme cascades for the aromatic-to-aromatic upgrading of lignin monomers.

Lignin valorization is critical to the economic viability of lignocellulosic biorefineries and could serve as an additional revenue stream for the pulp and paper industry. Emergent lignin-focused biomass pretreatment processes release a variety of aromatic monomers that could be directly upgraded into value-added aromatics for use as monomers, flavors, and fragrances. To date, most biological approaches for lignin valorization use a two-stage molecular disassembly→targeted reconstruction strategy that leverages microbial funnels to route lignin monomers (>C6) into C2-C3 metabolic intermediates

Multiway Analysis of the Electrochemical Oxidation Pathway of a Lignin Using Chemometrics.

The electrochemical oxidation mechanism of biopolymer lignin is challenging to characterize due to its complex structure. Controlling the oxidation process is crucial for ensuring the economic feasibility of electrochemical depolymerization of lignin, as it often generates numerous undesirable compounds. Regulating the depolymerization process can lead to the production of high-yield aromatic compounds, such as phenols and carboxylic acids. In addition to the depolymerization of lignin by the electrocatalyst, hydroxyl radicals (•OH) during the electrochemical oxidation could also depolymerize

Exploring the Effects of Lignin Nanoparticles in Different Zebrafish Inflammatory Models.

PURPOSE: Lignin is the most abundant source of aromatic biopolymers and has gained interest in industrial and biomedical applications due to the reported biocompatibility and defense provided against bacterial and fungal pathogens, besides antioxidant and UV-blocking properties. Especially in the form of nanoparticles (NPs), lignin may display also antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. METHODS: To evaluate these characteristics, sonochemically nano-formulated pristine lignin (LigNPs) and enzymatically-phenolated one (PheLigNPs) were used to expose zebrafish embryos, without chorion, a

Lignin biosynthesis and accumulation in response to abiotic stresses in woody plants.

Woody plants have to experience various abiotic stresses due to their immobility and perennial characteristics. However, woody plants have evolved a series of specific regulation pathways in physiological and molecular mechanisms to deal with adverse environments. Compared with herbaceous plants, perennial woody plants have the advantages of developed roots and hard stems, and increased secondary xylem, which can strengthen the vascular system of the plants. The lignification process involves the lignin deposition on the cell wall by oxidation and polymerization of lignin monomer, which plays

Microparticles based on ionic and organosolv lignins for the controlled release of atrazine.

Lignins are natural polymers of the lignocellulosic biomass. Nowadays, there is a growing interest in developing value-added products based on lignins due to their renewability, low cost and abundance. In this work, lignin microspheres from organosolv and ionic isolation processes were prepared for the controlled release of atrazine. Microspheres were prepared by the solvent extraction/evaporation technique. The controlled release of atrazine from organosolv and ionic lignins microparticles was studied in water. Mobility experiments were performed in an agricultural soil from Argentina. The re

Unraveling the Role of Lignin Oligomers Functionality for the Synthesis of Nonisocyanate Polyurethanes.

Lignins are the main source of aromatic compounds in nature. Their depolymerization most often leads to oligomeric products, which lack proper valorization. In this study, two lignins (Kraft and organosolv) were subjected to two depolymerization methodologies, leading to a total of six lignin samples, which were characterized and functionalized to cyclocarbonate (CC) building blocks through a green and optimized one-pot procedure. The lignin oligomers obtained by depolymerization were compared to the raw lignins for the synthesis of safe and sustainable polyhydroxyurethane (PHU) thermosets by

Oxygenation and Oxidation of Lignin Model Dimers by Fungal Ortho-Methoxyphenolases.

Lignin is the largest renewable resource for aromatics, and the quest to understand enzymatic lignin modification has never been more important. A recently recognized group of single-domain type-3 copper enzymes, named ortho-methoxyphenolases (o-MPs, EC 1.14.18.13) and previously referred to as short polyphenol oxidases (PPOs), found in filamentous fungi can sequentially o-hydroxylate and oxidize guaiacyl-type phenols into methoxy-o-quinones. A subset of these enzymes also targets syringyl-type phenols and, via an unprecedented oxidative o-demethoxylation mechanism, funnels these into the same
