Techniques that reduce the toxicity of bacterial endotoxins are useful for studying the relationship between structure and biological activity. We used ionizing radiation to detoxify a highly refined endotoxin preparation. U.S. standard endotoxin EC. A clinical isolate and a soil isolate of Chromobacterium violaceum were compared to determine differences in virulence-related characteristics. Purified lipopolysaccharide (endotoxin) from the virulent, clinical strain was more reactive than that from the avirulent soil strain as determined by the Limulus amebocyte lysate assay. In a prospective clinical study, we investigated the inflammatory response in 88 neonatal subjects (43 boys and 45 girls) who underwent major abdominal surgery owing to congenital malformation involving the gastrointestinal tract and compared it with the response in 20 infants (8 boys, 12 girls; mean age, 4 mo) who underwent elective surgery for resolution of an existing temporary stoma. BACKGROUND: The contamination of contact lens storage cases by gram-negative bacteria has been associated with ulcerative keratitis. This study investigated the concentration of endotoxin, a substance produced by gram-negative bacteria, in contact lens cases.
METHODS: The limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) test was used to measure the concentration of endotoxin in the storage cases of 27 contact lens wearers. The units of concentration used were endotoxin units per ml (EU/ml). The type of storage solution used by each patient, as well as other aspects of lens care and use, were recorded.

This study aimed to examine the motility, biofilm production, endotoxin release, and antibiotic resistance of 81 Ralstonia pickettii isolates collected from different pharmaceutical water systems in Croatia.
