Energy Decomposition Analysis of the Activation of CO2 by Frustrated Lewis Pairs.

Numerous frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have been developed for activating small molecules such as H2 and CO2 in metal-free catalysis. In this work, we applied our energy decomposition scheme based on the block-localized wave function (BLW) method to explore the governing forces in the CO2 activations by a series of intramolecular FLPs where both the Lewis acid (with B as the center) and Lewis base (with N or P as the center) are attached to a benzene ring. The uniqueness of the BLW method is the self-consistent derivation of the diabatic state where the charge transfer interactions between FLP

Systematic parameter selection of carbon ion lattice radiation therapy: balancing RBE-weighted dose and LETd distributions.

Objective.Carbon ion lattice radiation therapy (CLRT) lacks systematic parameter selection strategies. This study aimed to develop an automated lattice placement system for CLRT and elucidate the impact of irradiation strategies (IS), lattice structures (Ls), vertex diameters, and gaps on relative biological effectiveness-weighted dose (RWD) and dose-averaged linear energy transfer (LETd) distributions.Approach.A proprietary MATLAB-based automated lattice placement system was applied to 15 bulky tumors using single-field optimization to mitigate range uncertainties. Two IS, lattice-only and la

Impact of LET-modifying planning objectives on the optimization of mixed-modality proton-photon treatments.

BACKGROUND: The linear energy transfer (LET) correlates with the relative biological effectiveness (RBE); thus, the increase of LET in depth in proton therapy leads to elevated RBE and a higher risk of toxicity in healthy tissue beyond the target. Jointly optimized combined proton-photon treatments may serve as a means to redistribute LET and avoid high-LET regions in organs at risk (OARs). PURPOSE: To mitigate LET-related toxicity in OARs, this work leverages combined treatments by direct integration of LET in the joint optimization process. To this end, LET-modifying objective functions and

Three-dimensional dose-distribution measurement of therapeutic carbon-ion beams using a ZnS scintillator sheet.

The accurate measurement of the 3D dose distribution of carbon-ion beams is essential for safe carbon-ion therapy. Although ionization chambers scanned in a water tank or air are conventionally used for this purpose, these measurement methods are time-consuming. We thus developed a rapid 3D dose-measurement tool that employs a silver-activated zinc sulfide (ZnS) scintillator with lower linear energy transfer (LET) dependence than gadolinium-based (Gd) scintillators; this tool enables the measurement of carbon-ion beams with small corrections. A ZnS scintillator sheet was placed vertical to the

The influence of reference radiation photon energy on high-LET RBE: comparison of human peripheral lymphocytes and human-hamster hybrid AL cells.

The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) based on the induction of dicentrics in any cell type is principally an important information for the increasing application of high-LET radiation in cancer therapy. Since the standard system of human lymphocytes for measuring dicentrics are not compatible with our microbeam irradiation setup where attaching cells are essential, we used human-hamster hybrid AL cells which do attach on foils and fulfil the special experimental requirement for microbeam irradiations. In this work, the dose-response of AL cells to photons of different energy, 70 and 200

Laser induced resonance energy transfer--a novel approach towards achieving high sensitivity in capillary electrophoresis. I. Clinical diagnostic application.

Most of the procedures currently performed by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) with laser induced fluorescence detection requires prior derivatization. This increases cost, the turn-around-time and chances of extraneous contaminations. CZE with laser induced resonance energy transfer is demonstrated as a viable alternative for detecting non-fluorescent compounds with no prior derivatization. The feasibility of this approach is demonstrated by separating and directly detecting salicylic acid (2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid), gentisic acid (o-methoxybenzoic acid), salicyluric acid (o-hydroxyhippu

Low-LET and high-LET radiation action of 125I decays in DNA: effect of cysteamine on micronucleus formation and cell killing.

Chinese hamster ovary cells were pulse-labeled with 125I-iododeoxyuridine during early S phase, and cell samples were harvested 30 min or 5 h after labeling. The samples were frozen (with or without 25 mM cysteamine) and stored at -196 degrees C for accumulation of 125I decays. X-ray control experiments were performed at 37 degrees C and -196 degrees C. Aliquots of cells were plated for evaluating micronucleus formation and cell survival. The results demonstrated a striking shift in micronucleus formation and cell death with time after labeling. Cells frozen 30 min after labeling exhibited eff

Proximity effects in chromosome aberration induction by low-LET ionizing radiation.

Although chromosome aberrations are known to derive from distance-dependent mis-rejoining of chromosome fragments, evaluating whether a certain model describes such "proximity effects" better than another one is complicated by the fact that different approaches have often been tested under different conditions. Herein, a biophysical model ("BIANCA", i.e. BIophysical ANalysis of Cell death and chromosome Aberrations) was upgraded, implementing explicit chromosome-arm domains and two new models for the dependence of the rejoining probability on the fragment initial distance, r. Such probability

Low- and high-LET radiation drives clonal expansion of lung progenitor cells in vivo.

Abundant populations of epithelial progenitor cells maintain the epithelium along the proximal-to-distal axis of the airway. Exposure of lung tissue to ionizing radiation leads to tissue remodeling and potential cancer initiation or progression. However, little is known about the effects of ionizing radiation on airway epithelial progenitor cells. We hypothesized that ionizing radiation exposure will alter the behavior of airway epithelial progenitor cells in a radiation dose- and quality-dependent manner. To address this hypothesis, we cultured primary airway epithelial cells isolated from mi

Radiation-induced bystander effects and adaptive responses--the Yin and Yang of low dose radiobiology?

Our current knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the induction of bystander effects by low doses of high or low LET ionizing radiation is reviewed. The question of what actually constitutes a protective effect is discussed in the context of adaptive (often referred to as hormetic or protective) responses. Finally the review considers critically, how bystander effects may be related to observed adaptive responses or other seemingly protective effects of low doses exposures. Bystander effects induce responses at the tissue level, which are similar to generalized stress responses. Most of the w

Diagnostic pediatric computed tomographic scans of the head: actual dosage versus estimated risk.

BACKGROUND: Recent publications have implicated computed tomographic scans in the genesis of cancer and developmental delay. To determine whether the imaging protocols used in the authors' craniofacial practice could be harmful, they reviewed patient radiation exposure data for 77 patients. They then reviewed the literature concerning the documented effects of low linear energy transfer received during radiation and the application of the linear no-threshold hypothesis. METHODS: This is a retrospective single-institution analysis of the senior surgeon's (A.D.) patients who underwent computed

An ICT-FRET Fluorescent Probe Derived from Coumarin-Naphthalimide for Ratiometric Detection of Copper Ions.

This research presents a new ratiometric fluorescent probe designed for Cu²⁺ detection, utilizing a dual mechanism of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). In this probe, coumarin acts as the energy donor while naphthalimide serves as the acceptor, with a 2-picolinic ester moiety functioning as the Cu²⁺ binding site. In the absence of Cu²⁺, the 2-picolinic ester effectively suppresses electron transfer, inhibiting both ICT and FRET, resulting in strong blue fluorescence (λem = 478 nm) from the coumarin moiety. However, upon Cu²⁺ binding, the Cu

Convergently evolved linear actuators in ballistic tongues.

Rapid movements in animals depend on efficient energy transfer to overcome inertia. Among vertebrates, dense tissue and limited elastic storage are thought to impose profound constraints on power output, making extreme ballistic performance noteworthy. Here, we show that chameleons (Chamaeleonidae) and some lungless salamanders (Plethodontidae) have independently converged on a shared biomechanical solution: a sliding-based linear actuator that launches the tongue via muscular squeezing of a tapered skeletal rod. This design decouples muscle action from skeletal movement, enabling acceleration

Concerning the health effects of internally deposited radionuclides.

The ionizing radiation dose-response relationships for internally deposited radionuclides are examined using data from humans involving Ra and laboratory animal studies involving alpha-emitters Ra, Ra, Ra, Th, Pu, Pu, and Am and beta-emitters Y, Sr, Y, and Ce. Intake routes included ingestion, inhalation, and injection. The lifetime effects are best described by three-dimensional average-dose-rate/time/response surfaces that compete with other causes of death during an individual's lifetime. Using maximum likelihood survival regression methods, the characteristic logarithmic slope for cancer i

Convex, Real-Time Koopman Model Predictive Control of Activated-Sludge Aeration: Constraint-Aware Operation With an Explicit Energy-Nitrous-Oxide Operating Frontier.

Aeration is the largest energy consumer in activated-sludge treatment and a principal control over nitrous oxide (N2O), a dominant contributor to a plant's carbon footprint, while effluent limits remain nonnegotiable. This paper develops a convex Koopman-operator model predictive controller (MPC) for that three-way trade-off. Extended dynamic mode decomposition identifies a linear predictor of the nonlinear process, N2O included; successive linear programming reduces each control step to a strictly convex quadratic program with explicit ammonia and total-nitrogen constraints, an offset-free co

Detection of cytomegalovirus in whole blood using three different real-time PCR chemistries.

Several different primer-probe chemistries have been produced commercially for real-time PCR detection and quantification of cytomegalovirus, but there are few studies evaluating their relative performance. We assessed three such commercial reagents with respect to analytical and clinical operating characteristics. The samples included 149 clinical whole blood specimens that were de-identified and assayed in parallel with all primer-probe systems. Individual methods used TaqMan, dual fluorescence resonance energy transfer hybridization probes, and labeled primer chemistries. Method comparabili

Recent Epidemiologic Studies and the Linear No-Threshold Model For Radiation Protection-Considerations Regarding NCRP Commentary 27.

National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements Commentary 27 examines recent epidemiologic data primarily from low-dose or low dose-rate studies of low linear-energy-transfer radiation and cancer to assess whether they support the linear no-threshold model as used in radiation protection. The commentary provides a critical review of low-dose or low dose-rate studies, most published within the last 10 y, that are applicable to current occupational, environmental, and medical radiation exposures. The strengths and weaknesses of the epidemiologic methods, dosimetry assessments, and sta

A verification-oriented review of reaction-enhanced radiotherapy: linking nuclear data, transport modeling, and measurable observables.

Reaction-enhanced radiotherapy (RER) aims to improve the therapeutic ratio of particle therapy by exploiting isotope-specific nuclear reactions that generate localized high-linear energy transfer secondary radiation. Absorbed dose remains the central metric for radiotherapy planning and evaluation; however, RER introduces additional verification requirements related to nuclear-reaction data, mixed-field transport, isotope delivery, and measurable secondary-field observables. This review frames RER as a verification-oriented physics problem built on three interdependent pillars: covariance-awar

A biophysical model of cell survival in particle beam therapy combined with hyperthermia incorporating temperature and radiation quality.

Objective.Hyperthermia (HT) is expected to enhance the biological effects of not only conventional radiotherapy but also particle beam therapy. However, a biophysical model that comprehensively considers both radiation quality (i.e. ion type and linear energy transfer, LET) and temperature has not yet been established. This study aimed to develop a model capable of calculating the cell-killing effect of particle beam therapy combined with HT.Approach.To incorporate temperature dependence into the stochastic microdosimetric kinetic (SMK) model, we hypothesized that sublethal lesion kinetics are

Enhanced values of the RBE and H ratio for cytogenetic effects induced by secondary electrons from an X-irradiated gold gurface.

The low-energy secondary electrons emerging from the entrance surface of an X-irradiated gold foil increase the dose to cells in contact with or at micrometer distances from this surface (Radiat. Res. 150, 92-100, 1998). We examined the effect of the spectrum of these low-energy electrons on the RBE for cytogenetic effects and showed that this RBE was increased. A monolayer of surface-attached human T lymphocytes was exposed to 60 kV X rays in the absence or presence of a gold foil positioned immediately behind the cell layer or separated from it by a Mylar foil 0.9 or 2 microm thick.
