Adaptive Finite Element Modeling of Linear Elastic Fatigue Crack Growth.

This paper proposed an efficient two-dimensional fatigue crack growth simulation program for linear elastic materials using an incremental crack growth procedure. The Visual Fortran programming language was used to develop the finite element code. The adaptive finite element mesh was generated using the advancing front method. Stress analysis for each increment was carried out using the adaptive mesh finite element technique. The equivalent stress intensity factor is the most essential parameter that should be accurately estimated for the mixed-mode loading condition which was used as the onse

Multiple Linear Regression Model of Meningococcal Disease in Ukraine: 1992-2015.

Estimating the rates of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) from epidemiologic data remains critical for making public health decisions. In Ukraine, such estimations have not been performed. We used epidemiological data to develop a national database. These data were used to estimate the population susceptible to IMD and identify the prevalence of asymptomatic carriers of N. meningitidis using simple epidemiological models of meningococcal disease that may be used by the national policy makers. The goal was to create simple, easily understood analysis of patterns of the infection within Ukrai

Linear model analysis of the influencing factors of boar longevity in Southern China.

This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the boar herd life month (BHLM) in Southern China. A total of 1630 records of culling boars from nine artificial insemination centers were collected from January 2013 to May 2016. A logistic regression model and two linear models were used to analyze the effects of breed, housing type, age at herd entry, and seed stock herd on boar removal reason and BHLM, respectively. Boar breed and the age at herd entry had significant effects on the removal reasons (P < 0.001). Results of the two linear models (with or without removal reason including

A bivariate autoregressive linear mixed effects model for the analysis of longitudinal data.

In clinical studies, dependent bivariate continuous responses may approach equilibrium over time. We propose an autoregressive linear mixed effects model for bivariate longitudinal data in which the current responses are regressed on the previous responses of both variables, fixed effects, and random effects. The equilibria are modeled using fixed and random effects. This model is a bivariate extension of the model for univariate longitudinal data given by Funatogawa et al. (Statist. Med. 2007; 26:2113-2130). As an illustration of the approach we analyze parathyroid hormone and serum calcium m

Modeling drug-melanin interaction with theoretical linear solvation energy relationships.

The affinity of drugs and other xenobiotic agents for melanin is a well-known phenomenon, often occurring with serious physiological consequences. For example, the interaction of anti-psychotic drugs with neuromelanin may play a pivotal role in the induction of extrapyramidal movement disorders associated with the chronic administration of phenothiazine and other neuroleptic agents. Little, however, is known about the complete nature of melanin-drug binding and the impact of these interactions on the physico-chemical properties of melanin. Data, such as binding affinities, can be analyzed usin

Screening of vibroarthrographic signals via adaptive segmentation and linear prediation modeling.

This paper proposes a noninvasive method to diagnose chondromalacia patella at its early stages by recording knee vibration signals (also known as vibroarthrographic or VAG signals) over the mid-patella during normal movement. An adaptive segmentation method was developed to segment the nonstationary VAG signals. The least squares modeling method was used to reduce the number of data samples to a few model parameters. Model parameters along with a few clinical parameters and a signal variability parameter were then used as discriminant features for screening VAG signals by applying logistic an

Linear and nonlinear effect of the argon laser on a fallopian tube animal model.

Rabbit fallopian tubes were used as models to demonstrate the delayed effects of the argon laser wavelength on tissue. Power density, energy density, and velocity were all variables in the experiment. Three groups of ten rabbits were sacrificed two at a time, on days 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20. The results clearly showed delayed tissue changes associated with fibrosis. Mathematical and theoretical comparisons of the argon laser to the carbon dioxide laser help express the advantages and disadvantages of the use of the argon laser in fallopian tube surgery. The return of organ function with respect t

A Mixture of Distributed Lag Non-Linear Models to Account for Spatially Heterogeneous Exposure-Lag-Response Associations.

Environmental exposures, such as air pollution and extreme temperatures, have complex effects on human health. These effects are often characterized by non-linear exposure-lag-response relationships and delayed impacts over time. Accurately capturing these dynamics is crucial for informing public health interventions. The Distributed Lag Non-Linear Model (DLNM) is a flexible statistical framework for estimating such effects in epidemiological research. However, standard DLNM implementations typically assume a homogeneous exposure-lag-response association across the study region, overlooking po

Finite Mixtures of Multivariate t $$ t $$ Linear Mixed-Effects Models for Censored Longitudinal Data With Concomitant Covariates.

Clustering longitudinal biomarkers in clinical trials uncovers associations between clinical outcomes, disease progression, and treatment effects. Finite mixtures of multivariate t $$ t $$ linear mixed-effects (FM-MtLME) models have proven effective for modeling and clustering multiple longitudinal trajectories that exhibit grouped patterns with strong within-group similarity. Motivated by an AIDS study with plasma viral loads measured under assay-specific detection limits, this article extends the FM-MtLME model to account for censored outcomes. The proposed model is called the FM-MtLME wit

BG2: Bayesian variable selection in generalized linear mixed models with nonlocal priors for non-Gaussian GWAS data.

BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies (GWASes) aim to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with a given phenotype. A common approach for the analysis of GWAS is single marker analysis (SMA) based on linear mixed models (LMMs). However, LMM-based SMA usually yields a large number of false discoveries and cannot be directly applied to non-Gaussian phenotypes such as count data. RESULTS: We present a novel Bayesian method to find SNPs associated with non-Gaussian phenotypes. To that end, we use generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) and, thus, call our method Bayesia

Multiple linear regression models for predicting the n‑octanol/water partition coefficients in the SAMPL7 blind challenge.

A multiple linear regression model called MLR-3 is used for predicting the experimental n-octanol/water partition coefficient (log PN) of 22 N-sulfonamides proposed by the organizers of the SAMPL7 blind challenge. The MLR-3 method was trained with 82 molecules including drug-like sulfonamides and small organic molecules, which resembled the main functional groups present in the challenge dataset. Our model, submitted as "TFE-MLR", presented a root-mean-square error of 0.58 and mean absolute error of 0.41 in log P units, accomplishing the highest accuracy, among empirical methods and also in al

A Community Needs Index for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program Planning: Application of Spatial Generalized Linear Mixed Models.

Objective The objective is to estimate community needs with respect to risky adolescent sexual behavior in a way that is risk-adjusted for multiple community factors. Methods Generalized linear mixed modeling was applied for estimating teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease (STD) incidence by postal ZIP code in New York State, in a way that adjusts for other community covariables and residual spatial autocorrelation. A community needs index was then obtained by summing the risk-adjusted estimates of pregnancy and STD cases. Results Poisson regression with a spatial random effect was c

Comparison of procedures to assess non-linear and time-varying effects in multivariable models for survival data.

The focus of many medical applications is to model the impact of several factors on time to an event. A standard approach for such analyses is the Cox proportional hazards model. It assumes that the factors act linearly on the log hazard function (linearity assumption) and that their effects are constant over time (proportional hazards (PH) assumption). Variable selection is often required to specify a more parsimonious model aiming to include only variables with an influence on the outcome. As follow-up increases the effect of a variable often gets weaker, which means that it varies in time.

A new method to explore the distribution of interindividual random effects in non-linear mixed effects models.

This article presents a new approach for exploring the distribution of interindividual random effects in nonlinear mixed effect models. The approach introduces a spline function, which transforms an assumed normally distributed interindividual random effect to an arbitrary distribution approximating that of the data. The performance of this tool is illustrated using simulated pharmacokinetic data with non-normally distributed random effects. Results of the analyses of two real kinetic data sets are also presented.

Insights on United States cumulative measles cases during the 2026 outbreak using ARIMA and generalized linear models.

To understand the nature of the current measles outbreaks taking place across the United States in 2026, we analyzed historical surveillance data dating back to 1997 using four distinct forecasting models. By withholding data from the first four months of 2026 for out-of-sample validation, we evaluated how well traditional trend tracking and temporal dependence could anticipate this year's trajectory. While models incorporating short-term patterns performed best overall, every single model underestimated the cumulative cases recorded by May 1, 2026. This systematic underprediction reveals that

Dynamic Individualized Prediction of Binary Clinical Outcomes Using Bayesian Generalized Linear Mixed Models With Application in Scleroderma.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and timely prediction of critical events from longitudinal electronic health record (EHR) data is essential for precision medicine, particularly in complex chronic diseases with heterogeneous and evolving patient trajectories. Despite rapid growth in the number of statistical and machine learning methods, prediction remains challenging, especially for binary outcomes. Many valid approaches either lack transparency, ignore temporal dependence, or are difficult to dynamically update with new data, limiting clinical applicability. Existing dynamic prediction methods are desig

Proteomic risk scores for predicting common diseases using linear and neural network models in the UK biobank.

Plasma proteomics provides a unique opportunity to enhance disease prediction by capturing protein expression patterns linked to diverse pathological processes. Leveraging data from 2,923 proteins measured in 53,030 UK Biobank participants, we developed proteomic risk scores for 27 common outcomes over 5- and 15-year follow-up periods using two approaches: a linear ElasticNet regression model and a deep learning neural network (NN) model. Using Cox regression, we assessed the discrimination of proteomic risk scores either in isolation or as incremental improvements over clinical risk factors.

Establishment and Comparison of Piecewise Linear Regression Models to Measure Thyroid Volume by 2D and 3D Ultrasound.

OBJECTIVE: Compared thyroid volumes measured by 2-D and 3-D US with those of resected specimens and proposed new models to improve measurement accuracy. METHODS: This study included 80 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy. One 2D_model and one 3D_model were developed using piecewise linear regression analysis. The accuracy of these models was compared using an ellipsoid model (2-D_US value × 0.5), 3-D_US value, and Ying’s model [1.76 + (2-D_US value × 0.38)]. RESULTS: The new 2D_model was: V=2.66 + (0.71 * X1) - (1.51 * X2). In this model, if 2-D_US value <= 228.39, X1 = 2-D_US value a

Linear and non-linear feature selection for survival modelling of ischemic heart disease in patients with diabetes: Insights from electronic health records.

Cardiovascular disease, particularly ischemic heart disease (IHD), is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Accurate risk prediction is essential, yet the influence of linear versus non-linear feature selection and survival modelling on performance and feature interpretability remains insufficiently explored. We analysed 12,281 patients with T2DM from a university hospital EHR, followed for up to 15 years. The outcome was incident IHD, defined by ICD-10 codes. After variance thresholding and multicollinearity filtering, 263 predictors were r
