Papillary carcinoma of the base of the tongue. Case clinic.

Ectopic lingual thyroid tissue is an uncommon developmental anomaly. Tumours of identical pathological characteristics as those arising in the eutropic thyroid tissue, may be present in ectopic locations. There are very few cases of malignant tumours reported in the literature. Here we report a review of this pathology and we describe a case of a papillary carcinoma of the base of the tongue, located in ectopic lingual thyroid tissue, in a 66 year-old white man, complaining of dysphagia and oral bleeding. Surgical treatment was carried out, consisting of radical resection of the right hemineck

Graves' disease in an adolescent with dual congenital ectopia and no orthotopic thyroid gland identified by Tc-99m-pertechnetate SPET/CT imaging.

This is the first case of Graves' disease in an adolescent with lingual and prelaryngeal dual congenital ectopia and no orthotopic thyroid gland identified by technetium-99m-pertechnetate (99mTcO-4) SPET/CT imaging in a 15 years old boy. After 8 weeks treatment with methimazole, Graves' disease subsided. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the mass revealed the normal colloid and normal follicular cells without an atypia or lymphoid elements, suggesting a benign ectopic thyroid gland. In conclusion, there is no report in the literature with DETT lingual and prelaryngeal absence of orthotopic th

Superior laryngeal artery originating from the lingual artery.

In most cases, the superior laryngeal artery (SLA) branches from the superior thyroid artery, which, in turn, leaves the external carotid artery. Few dissection studies found previously that the SLA could originate from the lingual artery. We report here probably the first evidence of such a rare anatomical variation found unilaterally in a retrospectively evaluated by computed tomography angiography adult male case. The left SLA left a suprahyoid coil of the lingual artery and continued over the greater hyoid horn to enter the larynx through the thyrohyoid membrane. On both sides, thyroid for

Dysfunctional ectopic thyroid gland: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Lingual thyroid gland is a rare anomaly of thyroid gland development, occurring more frequently in females. If it causes local symptomatology such as dysphagia, dysphonia or dyspnea it is diagnosed in childhood, however, if it is asymptomatic it is usually diagnosed in adulthood. CASE OUTLINE: We present a 23-year-old female patient in whom we diagnosed lingual thyroid gland coincidentally during diagnostic procedures of a concomitant disease. The application of 131I scintigraphy showed an oval field of intensive accumulation of radio markers in the zone of medial face line, aro

Resistance to thyroid hormone in a patient with thyroid dysgenesis.

We report a patient with the unusual coincidence of two rare congenital disorders, lingual ectopy of the thyroid gland and resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH), resulting in impaired thyroid hormone production and action, respectively. The proposita had a positive thyrotropin (TSH) newborn screening test (350 mU/L, confirmed) with normal thyroxine (T4) and no clinical signs of hypothyroidism. A scintiscan revealed lingual but no orthotopic thyroid tissue. Levothyroxine (LT4) replacement failed to reduce TSH and was discontinued after four months owing to significantly elevated free T4. Thyrolinguofacial trunk arising from the carotid bifurcation determined by cadaver dissection.

Knowledge of the arterial variations in the neck region may be of great importance in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical and maxillofacial pathologies. We report on a male cadaver found to have a superior thyroid, lingual and facial artery arising with a common trunk from the relatively high carotid bifurcation on the right side. After branching off the superior thyroid artery, the linguofacial trunk divided in the submandibular region into the lingual and the facial artery. The embryogenesis of such a combination of anomalies is not clear, but the anatomic consequences may have important

Ectopic lingual goiter treated by transoral robotic surgery.

Multinodular goiter in lingual thyroid is quite rare. Surgical removal is indicated in symptomatic patients and when cancer is suspected. An external approach is most often used, but is associated with morbidity and sequelae. In this study, we present for the first time the technique of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for removal of a massive lingual goiter. Prospective patient data were collected, including demographics, medical history, symptoms, comorbidities and drugs prescribed. The da Vinci Surgical System was used for a transoral approach to the oropharynx. The technique was validated

Ectopic thyroid tissue.

Abnormalities in the embryologic development and migration of the thyroid gland can result in ectopic thyroid tissue, which may occur on the midline in any position from the base of the tongue to the mediastinum. Although ectopic thyroid tissue may be asymptomatic, local obstructive, hemorrhagic or other complications may occur. Radionuclide thyroid scan is confirmatory when the diagnosis is suspected. Hypothyroidism is common in lingual thyroid, and thyroid supplementation is generally required.

Ectopic thyroid masquerading as submandibular tumour: a case report.

An ectopic thyroid gland may be present in any location along the path of migration from the foramen caecum to the mediastinum. The most common locations for an ectopic thyroid are the lingual thyroid followed by median cervical cysts. An ectopic thyroid in the submandibular region is extremely rare. We present the case of a 44-year-old patient with ectopic thyroid tissue in submandibular space and a review of the literature related to it.

The ultimobranchial gland and congenital thyroid abnormalities in man.

This study was carried out to investigate the fate of the ultimobranchial contribution to the thyroid in man when the thyroid lobe is not fully descended. Thyroid abnormalities were recorded in 41 of 29,000 autopsies at the London Hospital--a prevalence of 1.41/1000. The 18 major abnormalities included four cases of lingual thyroid, in two of which cystic structures were noted in the neck in the region of the upper parathyroid. Three further cases of lingual thyroid with upper parathyroid cysts were collected from other sources. The multilobulated cystic structures were up to 1.5 cm in diamete

Ectopic colloid goiter in mediastinum with normal thyroid gland.

Ectopic thyroid tissue is a rare developmental abnormality involving aberrant embryogenesis of the thyroid gland during passage from the primitive foregut to the pretracheal position. The most frequent position is the base of the tongue (lingual thyroid); however, it has been described in other sites, such as the submandibular region, trachea, mediastinum, and subdiaphragmatic regions. Here, we report a case of an adenomatous goiter that developed in mediastinal thyroid tissue without any connection to the pretracheal thyroid gland.

Imaging identifies submandibular ectopic thyroid tissue.

The identification of submandibular ectopic normal thyroid in the lateral neck with a coexisting normally located and functional thyroid gland is rare. Ectopic normal thyroid tissue in the midline location is most commonly related to aberrant migration along the thyroglossal duct (ie, lingual thyroid). A 54-year-old man with a 6-month history of visible asymptomatic swelling in the right submandibular region had ultrasonography and Tc-99m pertechnetate imaging.

Transverse Cervical Artery for Head and Neck Reconstruction with Free Jejunal Flaps: A Retrospective Study of Computed Tomography Angiography.

BACKGROUND: The transverse cervical artery is less commonly used than other external carotid arteries as a recipient vessel. Therefore, we aimed to compare the utility of the transverse cervical artery as a recipient vessel with that of the external carotid artery system for microvascular head and neck reconstruction by quantitative analysis of dynamic-enhanced computed tomography. METHODS: Fifty-one consecutive patients who underwent free jejunum transfer following total pharyngolaryngectomy between January 2017 and December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Ninety-four pairs of the diamet

Synchronous Ectopic Thyroid Gland and Ectopic Parathyroid Adenoma on 99mTc-Sestamibi Scintigraphy and Correlative Imaging.

99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy localizes parathyroid adenoma as a persistent focus of uptake on delayed images, whereas thyroid glands in normal or ectopic locations are seen on only early images and wash out on delayed images. We report a case of absence of eutopic neck thyroid activity and synchronous ectopic lingual thyroid and mediastinal parathyroid adenoma on scintigraphy confirmed with CT.

Dual thyroid ectopia.

Ectopic thyroid gland is a rare embryological fault of thyroid development. Dual ectopic thyroid is even more rare and only 8 cases have been reported in the literature. The author presents a case of dual ectopic thyroid in a 16-year-old boy with an anterior neck mass, which is gradually growing in size particularly in the last 2 years. The initial diagnosis was thyroglossal duct cyst. Thyroid function test revealed elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone. Ultrasound of the neck did not show thyroid gland in its normal pretracheal position. Thyroid scan (Technetium 99) revealed the diagnosis of d

Thyroid dysfunction alters gut microbiota composition and alveolar bone levels in female mice.

Thyroid hormone dysfunction has been implicated in both bone metabolism and gut microbial composition, yet the interplay between thyroid status, gut microbiota, and alveolar bone homeostasis remains unclear. In this study, female C57BL/6J mice were treated with triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) to induce hyperthyroidism or with methimazole (MMI) to induce hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroid mice exhibited decreased alveolar bone levels, measured as greater root exposure between the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and alveolar bone crest (ABC) (buccal: 41% increase, p = 1.566e-07, 1-β = 1.0; lingu

Frequency-Specific Alterations of Fractional Amplitude of Low-Frequency Fluctuations in Adult-Onset Hypothyroidism.

BACKGROUND: The neuropathophysiological mechanisms of brain damage underlying hypothyroidism remain unclear. Fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) has been established as a reliable indicator for investigation of abnormal spontaneous brain activity that occurs at specific frequencies in different types of mental disorder. However, the changes of fALFF in specific frequency bands in hypothyroidism have not yet been investigated. METHODS: Fifty-three hypothyroid patients and 39 healthy controls (HCs) underwent thyroid-related hormone levels tests, neuropsychological assessm
