There is a broad spectrum of soft-tissue masses in children that can be challenging to diagnose clinically and on imaging. This article reviews the typical clinical and imaging findings of the most common and relevant benign, intermediate and malignant pediatric soft-tissue tumors in the following categories of the 2013 World Health Organization (WHO) classification: adipocytic tumors (lipoma, lipoblastoma, and liposarcoma), fibroblastic/myofibroblastic tumors (nodular fasciitis, myositis ossificans, fibrous hamartoma of infancy, fibromatosis colli, desmoid-type fibromatosis, lipofibromatosis,

Fat-containing lesions of the head and neck are commonly encountered in day-to-day practice. Our aim was to review the various imaging presentations of common and some uncommon fat-containing lesions within the head and neck with potential pitfalls and mimics. While most soft-tissue masses have a fairly similar density, the presence of fat in a mass lesion is easy to identify on both CT/MRI and can help narrow the differential. Case-based examples of lipomas, liposarcomas, lipoblastomas, dermoids, teratomas and other fatty lesions will be used to describe imaging features. While fat density ca

This study correlates the magnetic resonance imaging characteristics with the pathologic findings in rare benign fatty soft tissue tumors in four children. A review of the literature is presented. Two cases of infiltrating lipoma displayed bright signal on both T1- and T2-weighted images, similar to that observed in subcutaneous fat. Histological study revealed extensive muscle infiltration by mature fat, with some areas of total fatty replacement. The case of facial lipomatosis revealed an extensive process of fatty invasion of adjacent soft tissue and osseous deformity by mass effect of the

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Volvulus caused by mesenteric masses is rare and may result in serious consequences. This study aimed to better characterize volvulus caused by mesenteric masses in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in 24 patients who underwent surgical treatment between January 1994 and January 2014 in one single institution.
RESULTS: There were 10 boys and 14 girls. The most frequent findings were abdominal pain (100%), emesis (91.7%) and nausea (83.3%). Physical examination showed positive ileus signs in majority cases, and palpable mass was found in hal

The diagnosis of soft-tissue masses in children can be difficult because of the frequently nonspecific clinical and imaging characteristics of these lesions. However key findings on imaging can aid in diagnosis. The identification of macroscopic fat within a soft-tissue mass narrows the differential diagnosis considerably and suggests a high likelihood of a benign etiology in children. Fat can be difficult to detect with sonography because of the variable appearance of fat using this modality. Fat is easier to recognize using MRI, particularly with the aid of fat-suppression techniques. Althou

Cervicothoracic lesions are not uncommon in children. All cervicothoracic lesions except superficial lesions extend from the neck to the thorax through the thoracic inlet. Evaluation of this area involves multiple imaging modalities: plain radiography, ultrasonography, nuclear medicine, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. However, MR imaging is the method of choice for assessing the full extents of cervicothoracic lesions and their relationships to neurovascular structures. Cervicothoracic lesions can be classified as congenital lesions, inflammatory lesions, benign tumor

PURPOSE: To confirm the overall benignity of fat-containing soft tissue tumors (STT) on a pediatric cohort and to define the clinical and imaging features that warrant a biopsy.
METHODS: A retrospective monocentric study was conducted on patients aged less than 25 years consecutively referred for fat-containing STT to our Comprehensive Cancer Center between 1998 and 2022. Tumor imaging characteristics at diagnosis (US, CT, or MRI) were correlated with pathology.
RESULTS: The database extraction identified 63 fat-containing tumors with clinical, histologic, and imaging data available for revi

Primary retroperitoneal neoplasms are uncommon in children. Retroperitoneal neoplasms are either mesodermal, neurogenic, germ cell ectodermal or lymphatic in origin. In general, primary retroperitoneal neoplasms in children have different spectrum and prevalence compared to those in adults. Neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, benign teratoma and lymphoma are the common retroperitoneal neoplasms. In this review, the clinical and CT futures of common retroperitoneal neoplasms in children are described. Coarse, amorphous, and mottled calcification are very common in neuroblastoma. A comprehensive review of soft tissue tumors in children and adolescents disclosed the presence of 190 neoplasms in 183 patients, which were diagnosed in infants between birth and 12 months of age; these infants represented approximately 20% of our entire pediatric soft tissue tumor series. In excess of 75% of cases were pathologically benign with the hemangioendothelioma, lymphangioma, and fibromatosis-myofibromatosis constituting the majority of cases in this category. Fibrous histiocytoma and lipoblastoma were the other two benign entities. Congenital-infantile fibrosarcoma was considered a

Fat-containing tumors are the most common soft-tissue tumors encountered clinically. The vast majority of fat-containing soft-tissue masses are benign. Lipomas are the most common benign fat-containing masses and demonstrate a characteristic appearance at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Less common benign soft-tissue masses include lipoblastoma, angiolipoma, spindle cell lipoma/pleomorphic lipoma, myolipoma, chondroid lipoma, lipomatosis of nerve, lipomatosis, hibernoma, and fat necrosis. Well-differentiated liposarcomas (WDLPSs)/atypical lipomatous tumors (ALTs) are locally aggressive soft-t

Benign lipomatous tumors are characterized at the genetic level by different types of chromosomal abnormalities. A rearrangement of the HMGIC (HMGA2) gene, localized in 12q15 and coding for an architectural non-histone DNA protein, is observed in a majority of solitary superficial lipomas. Alterations of HMGIC are often resulting from reciprocal translocations, such as t(3;12)(q27-28;q15) that fuses LPP with HMGIC, but a variety of chromosomal anomalies, such as deletions, inversions or insertions are also observed. Rearrangements of chromosomal regions 6p21-22, 13q, 11q13, 12q13 or others are

Fat-containing tumors of the salivary glands are uncommon. Their wide histological spectrum varies from pure lipomatous neoplasms similar to their cutaneous and soft tissue counterparts to mixed lipoepithelial lesions specific to the salivary glands. With few exceptions, these uncommon lesions affect mainly the elderly, with a mean age at presentation of ≥ 50 years and show a predilection for males. A few cases occur in childhood; some of them represent congenital lesions. In decreasing order of frequency, ordinary (soft-tissue type) lipoma, oncocytic lipoadenoma, non-oncocytic sialolipoma, an

Microcystic lymphatic malformations (MLM) are low-flow vascular malformations composed of multiple small cysts. MLM usually affect deep-lying structures, which makes their treatment even more difficult and complex. A novel and interesting treatment is rapamycin, a mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor that when orally administrated has offered favorable results. However, until recently, topical rapamycin had not been used in the treatment of MLM. Case 1 is a girl aged 13 years with extensive MLM affecting the muscles in the right buttock. The patient had received frequent cycles of cryothera

RATIONALE: Three-dimensional reconstruction (3DR) of preoperative images may improve the presurgical assessment of tumours prior to removal. We aimed to analyse the advantages and discrepancies of preoperative 3DR in paediatric tumours.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study from 2016 to 2019, including patients with thoraco-abdominal tumours having predictable surgical risks on preoperative images (encasement of vessels posing vascular risks, ie, neuroblastic and soft tissue tumours or parenchyma preservation of the invaded organ, ie, liver and kidney). A comparison of 2D/3D

Retroperitoneal lesions represent a broad, diverse collection of entities; when they contain fat, the differential diagnosis, which ranges from benign to fully malignant lesions, substantially narrows. Lipomas rarely occur in the retroperitoneum; thus, fat-containing lesions in this location should never be dismissed as lipoma. Pelvic lipomatosis is the overgrowth of histologically normal fat in the extraabdominal compartments of the pelvis along the perirectal and perivesicular spaces. Infants and young children develop lipoblastomas rather than liposarcomas, which occur in older patients. Li

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the immunohistochemical stain profiling of adipocytic tumors.
METHODS: From our archive files between the years of 2012-2018, excised, formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded adipocytic tumors were retrospectively screened and 61 subjects were selected. The gender, age, tumor location and tumor diameter were evaluated. The cases were investigated in terms of p16, CD34, MDM2 expression and clinicopathological information.
RESULTS: Of the 61 patients included in the study, we found that 2 had hibernoma, 4 had lipoblastoma, 14 had spindle cell li

Ultrasonography (US) is usually the first imaging examination performed to evaluate palpable or visible superficial soft tissue lesions that are common in children. Although clinical assessments, such as age at presentation, clinical course, and overlying skin discoloration, are important for the differentiation of pediatric soft tissue lesions, US allows a specific diagnosis of some typical benign lesions and helps in guiding further investigation since it provides detailed information about the lesion location, characterization including solid versus cystic, vascularity, and compressibility.

OBJECT: Intramedullary spinal cord lipomas not associated with dysraphism are infrequently reported. When present, they typically occur in children and have a predilection for the cervical and thoracic spinal cord. The authors review the presentation, treatment, and disease course in 5 pediatric patients, and compare the outcomes with previously reported cases.
METHODS: With institutional review board approval, a retrospective chart review was undertaken at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
RESULTS: Four patients with intramedullary spinal cord lipomas and 1 patient with a lipoblastoma, none
