Moderate presbycusis boosts audio-visual integration, but not lip-reading.

In audiological practice, speech comprehension is typically assessed in the auditory modality alone (speech in quiet or noise). However, in real-life communication when the auditory input is degraded - due to noise or hearing loss (HL) - individuals rely on ancillary signals to enhance speech perception. Audio-visual (AV) integration is particularly effective in improving speech perception in noisy environments, yet the influence of HL and aging on this ability remains underexplored. This study aims to disentangle the effects of HL and age on visual aspects of speech processing, both unimodall

Improvement in speech-reading ability by auditory training: Evidence from gender differences in normally hearing, deaf and cochlear implanted subjects.

Several neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies on gender differences in speech processing lead to the suggestion that women use the neural network of predictive and integrative analysis of speech to a larger extent than men. During speech-reading there is indeed a lack of reliable clues for word recognition which should emphasize predictive and integrative strategies of the brain. Our study aimed to explore gender differences in deaf and cochlear implanted (CI) patients at different levels during speech-reading, for words or phonemes, that we consider, correspond to increased involvement

Neural network for Braille reading and the speech-reading convergence in the blind: Similarities and differences to visual reading.

All writing systems represent units of spoken language. Studies on the neural correlates of reading in different languages show that this skill relies on access to brain areas dedicated to speech processing. Speech-reading convergence onto a common perisylvian network is therefore considered universal among different writing systems. Using fMRI, we test whether this holds true also for tactile Braille reading in the blind. The neural networks for Braille and visual reading overlapped in the left ventral occipitotemporal (vOT) cortex. Even though we showed similar perisylvian specialization for

Audio-visual matching of speech and non-speech oral gestures in patients with aphasia and apraxia of speech.

BACKGROUND: Audio-visual speech perception mechanisms provide evidence for a supra-modal nature of phonological representations, and a link of these mechanisms to motor representations of speech has been postulated. This leads to the question if aphasic patients and patients with apraxia of speech are able to exploit the visual signal in speech perception and if implicit knowledge of audio-visual relationships is preserved in these patients. Moreover, it is unknown if the audio-visual processing of mouth movements has a specific organisation in the speech as compared to the non-speech domain.

Auditory brainstem implantation improves speech recognition in neurofibromatosis type II patients.

This prospective study aimed to determine speech understanding in neurofibromatosis type II (NF2) patients following implantation of a MED-EL COMBI 40+ auditory brainstem implant (ABI). Patients (n = 32) were enrolled postsurgically. Nonauditory side effects were evaluated at fitting and audiological performance was determined using the Sound Effects Recognition Test (SERT), Monosyllable-Trochee-Polysyllable (MTP) test and open-set sentence tests. Subjective benefits were determined by questionnaire. ABI activation was documented in 27 patients, 2 patients were too ill for testing and 3 patien

Comparing implants with hearing aids in profoundly deaf children.

Speech perception, speech production, and spoken language skills of 13 age-matched groups of prelingually deaf children, all enrolled in the same educational setting, were compared. Each group consisted of three children, two with hearing aids but different degrees of hearing loss (pure-tone average > 100 dB HL and pure-tone average between 90 and 100 dB HL) and one who had used a Nucleus multichannel implant (Cochlear Corp., Englewood, Colo.) for 3 years. The implanted group exhibited significantly better performance in all areas than aided children with greater than 100 dB losses. However, c

The University of California, San Francisco/Storz cochlear implant program.

Using a four-channel implant system with a vocoder-based processor developed at UCSF over an extensive period of research, clinical trials of the UCSF/Storz device were initiated in February 1985 under the sponsorship of Storz Instrument Company. To date, 13 patients have been implanted with the UCSF/Storz device, 10 of whom have been fitted with their external processor and transmitter and have received at least their initial postoperative evaluations. Of these 10 patients, nine are able to use all four channels of their implant system. The device fitting/adjusting process for these patients

Cochlear implantation in neurofibromatosis type 2 after radiation therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the results of cochlear implantation in patients with neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) who have previously been treated with radiation therapy to the vestibular schwannoma (VS) in their only hearing ear. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of the Melbourne Cochlear implant database was undertaken to identify patients with NF2 undergoing cochlear implantation in whom previous radiation therapy had been performed to control their VS (ipsilateral tumor). Three patients were identified. A case note review was undertaken and data collected on preoperative and postoperative

Vestibular schwannoma in the only hearing ear: cochlear implant or auditory brainstem implant?

OBJECTIVE: To explore the dilemma faced by neurotologists confronted with the patient who develops a vestibular schwannoma in the only hearing ear, the other having been deaf from birth, and to consider the choice between auditory rehabilitation using a cochlear implant (CI) on the congenitally deaf side and an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) on the tumor side. STUDY DESIGN: A record review of two patients born deaf in one ear and who developed a vestibular schwannoma in the contra lateral ear, who then received a CI in the congenitally deaf ear. SETTING: Tertiary referral center with speci

The neural basis of lip-reading capabilities is altered by early visual deprivation.

The present study investigated the neural basis of lip-reading in patients treated for congenital bilateral cataracts using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). These patients represent a model to study the role of visual experience in early infancy for the development of visual functions. Short video clips with an adult speaker's lips mouthing different words were presented. The participants were asked to indicate whether the current word was the same as the previous one (one-back matching task). A control condition consisted of the same stimuli but with the task to judge whether the

Examination of differences between successful and unsuccessful elderly hearing aid candidates matched for age, hearing loss and gender.

This study examined group differences on a variety of measures for three groups of elderly hearing aid candidates matched for gender, age and hearing loss. These three groups were: (1) 26 candidates who declined amplification (non-adherents); (2) 24 individuals who purchased hearing aids, but subsequently returned them (rejected HA); and (3) 26 who purchased hearing aids and continued to use their hearing aids for at least the first 6 months following delivery (accepted HA). Following demonstration of adequate reliability for these measures, using the non-adherents as the test retest study sam

Hearing-impaired young people - a physician's guide .

Physicians reading this will have a broad range of in-depth knowledge about their own subspecialty. However, in daily medical practice there are topics of which all physicians should have some knowledge. Those who deal with young people should have some knowledge of the needs of the hearing-impaired population within this group of patients. This article is intended to provide an overview of young people with hearing impairment (HIYP), the challenges they face and what we can do to help them. In this paper, we assume that data published regarding hearing-impaired children apply to HIYP from 13
