MoS2-loaded cholesteric liquid crystal microcapsules for NIR responsive thermochromism.

Thermochromic materials with temperature-dependent color changes and color memory are widely used in functional coatings, anti-counterfeiting, and smart architectures. Cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) molecules undergo periodic helical twisting of their orientation, forming a unique helical superstructure with fluidity and long-range orientational order. When confined in microscale spherical droplets with interfacial anchoring, CLC assemblies exhibit dynamic optical response due to thermoresponsive molecular rearrangement. The helical defects within physical confinement and the interfacial mol

Electrically Tunable Momentum Space Polarization Singularities in Liquid Crystal Microcavities.

Momentum space polarization singularities of light appear as vectorial twists in the scattered and radiated far field patterns of exotic photonic structures. They relate to important concepts such as bound states in the continuum, spatiotemporal light steering, polarization Möbius strips, Berry curvature, and associated topological photonic phenomena. Polarization singularities, such as completely circularly polarized C-points, are readily designed in real space through interference of differently polarized beams. In momentum space, they require instead sophisticated patterning of photonic cry

An Atomic-Scale Investigation of Liquid Crystal Orientation in Polar and Nonpolar Solvents.

Liquid crystals (LCs) exhibit unique ordered environments at interfaces, enabling functionalities in optical devices and biosensors. Their ability to transmit molecular interactions over macroscopic distances is well-known, yet the atomic-scale behavior of LC interfaces with polar and nonpolar solvents remains unclear. This study employs atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the orientation and structure of 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) in vacuum, water, ethanol, and methane. Polar solvents promote the smectic phase but disrupt the molecular organization at interfaces

Light-Responsive Liquid Crystal Surface Topographies for Dynamic Stimulation of Cells.

All biological surfaces possess distinct dynamic surface topographies. Due to their versatility, these topographies play a crucial role in modulating cell behavior and, when intentionally designed, can precisely guide cellular responses. So far, biomechanical responses have predominantly been studied on static surfaces, overlooking the dynamic environment in the body, where cells constantly interact with shifting biomechanical cues. In this work, we designed and fabricated a light-responsive liquid crystal polymer film to study the effect of micrometer-scale, dynamic surface topographies on ce

Molecular understanding on ultraviolet photolytic degradation of cyano liquid crystal monomers.

Cyano liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are proposed as emerging chemical pollutants with persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic properties. Herein, five cyano LCMs, including 4-cyano-4'-ethylbiphenyl (2CB), 4-Butyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (4CB), 4-cyano-4'-ethoxybiphenyl (2OCB), 4-(trans-4-Ethylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile (2CHB) and 4-(trans-4-Vinylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile (2eCHB), were selected to investigate the reaction kinetics and excited state characteristic variations with their molecular structures by ultraviolet (UV) photolysis. Theoretical calculations reveal that the benzene ring, ethoxy and doub

Experimental Observation of Crystal-Liquid Coexistence in Slit-Confined Nonpolar Fluids.

Films of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) confined in slit geometry between two flat diamond substrates down to a few tens of Angstroms are studied by combining X-ray reflectivity with in-plane and out-of-plane X-ray scattering. The confined films form a heterogeneous structure with coexisting regions of liquid and crystalline phases. The liquid phase shows short-range ordering normal to the surfaces of the substrates. The experiments directly show the ability of the confinement to induce crystal objects, which is a long-discussed issue in the literature. The surface structure and morphology of the

Lipid coated liquid crystal droplets for the on-chip detection of antimicrobial peptides.

We describe a novel biosensor based on phospholipid-coated nematic liquid crystal (LC) droplets and demonstrate the detection of Smp43, a model antimicrobial peptide (AMP) from the venom of North African scorpion Scorpio maurus palmatus. Mono-disperse lipid-coated LC droplets of diameter 16.7 ± 0.2 μm were generated using PDMS microfluidic devices with a flow-focusing configuration and were the target for AMPs. The droplets were trapped in a bespoke microfluidic trap structure and were simultaneously treated with Smp43 at gradient concentrations in six different chambers. The disruption of the

Design of a large aperture tunable refractive Fresnel liquid crystal lens.

A large aperture tunable lens based on liquid crystals, which is considered for near-to-eye applications, is designed, built, and characterized. Large liquid crystal lenses with high quality are limited by very slow switching speeds due to the large optical path difference (OPD) required. To reduce the switching time of the lens, the thickness is controlled through the application of several phase resets, similar to the design of a Fresnel lens. A main point of the paper is the design of the Fresnel structure to have a minimal effect on the image quality. Our modeling and experimental results

Tunable liquid crystal cylindrical micro-optical array for aberration compensation.

A tunable aberration compensation device for rectangular micro-optical systems is proposed and demonstrated. This device, which is based in nematic liquid crystal and a micro-electrode structure, forms gradients in the index of refraction as a function of voltage. We have developed a fringe skeletonizing application in order to extract the 3D wavefront from an interference pattern. This software tool obtains the optical aberrations using Chebyshev polynomials. By using phase shifted electrical signals the aberrations can be controlled independently. A complete independent control over the sphe

Polarization-insensitive liquid crystal microlens array with dual focal modes.

We demonstrate a liquid crystal (LC) microlens array (MLA) fabricated by LCs possessing negative dielectric anisotropy, in conjunction with a cell with a three-electrode structure. The presented LC MLA is polarization-insensitive and can be operated in both concave and convex modes. The shortest focal length of the LC MLA is -2.54 and 2.22 mm in concave and convex mode, respectively. Disclination lines that are usually observed in conventional hole-patterned LC lens can also be avoided because of the vertical alignment treatment of LCs.

Purification of erucic acid by preparative high-performance liquid chromatography and crystallization.

Erucic acid (C22:l fatty acid) has been found to be useful in the treatment of adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). It appears to work by reducing the blood levels of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) which destroy the myelin sheaths of the nerves. Erucic acid was purified by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on columns packed with YMC C18 (10-20 microns, 120 A). Using ethanol-water as the mobile phase, the recovery of erucic acid was 69% and the purity was more than 97% as measured by gas chromatography. The amount of saturated VLCFAs was found to be within the limits spe

Enrichment-Free Detection of Trace Exosomes Enabled by Liquid Crystal Optics.

Detection of stem cell exosomes advances our understanding of stem cell biology and offers new pathways for disease treatment and diagnosis. However, the clinical translation is significantly hindered by low yields and the need for time-consuming enrichment. Here, we propose "direct exosome detection (DED)", an efficient, cost-effective, label-free, and highly specific liquid crystal (LC)-based optical platform that detects trace exosomes in complex media without pre-enrichment. By harnessing the optical amplification effect of LC, the specific binding of exosomes to hexadecyltrimethylammonium

Dynamical universality and vibrational divergence in 2D supercooled liquids, quasicrystals, and crystals.

We investigate the dynamical behavior and vibrational properties of three structurally distinct two-dimensional systems: a supercooled binary liquid, a dodecagonal quasicrystal (DDQC), and a hexagonal crystal. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we find that all three systems exhibit transient caging in the mean-squared displacement and non-Gaussian single-particle displacement statistics. However, the temperature dependence of the dynamics differs markedly among them. In the supercooled liquid, the peak of the non-Gaussian parameter increases upon cooling, reflecting the growth of dynamical

Liquid crystal dynamic interfaces to mediate droplet motion and chemical transport.

Liquid-infused porous surfaces have emerged as powerful platforms for manipulating droplet and interfacial transport. Incorporating liquid crystals (LCs) into these architectures introduces a new degree of control arising from molecular order. In LC-infused porous surfaces (LCIPS), droplet mobility, interfacial friction, and chemical transport become strongly coupled to the phase behavior and elastic properties of the underlying LC layer. This Feature Article reviews recent advances demonstrating how LC molecular order permits dynamic control of droplet motion, chemical release, and droplet mi

Continuous fabrication of Janus liquid crystal elastomer fibers with programmable actuation.

Smart fibers, particularly liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) fibers, are pivotal in soft robotics and adaptive textiles. However, existing fabrication methods are limited to simple monolithic structures, hindering the realization of complex actuation behaviors. To overcome this limitation, we develop a continuous extrusion platform for producing Janus LCE fibers that emulate asymmetric biological structures, such as plant tendrils, thereby enabling sophisticated actuation. This approach seamlessly integrates an LCE network with a dynamic covalent polymer network, allowing programmable on-demand l

Internalized Liquid Crystal Microcapsules for pH Sensing in Living Single Cells.

Liquid crystal (LC) materials provide a unique sensing platform because their long-range molecular order is highly sensitive to interfacial physicochemical changes. However, most LC-based systems operate at extracellular interfaces, limiting their applicability for intracellular analysis in living cells. Here, we report cell-internalized liquid crystal microcapsules for configuration-based monitoring of local intracellular pH-responsive changes. The sensing platform, denoted M-E7PBA, consists of an E7 liquid crystal core doped with pentyl biphenyl carboxylic acid (PBA) and encapsulated within

Electrothermally Addressable Liquid Crystal Elastomer Microactuator Arrays with Integrated Microheaters.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are attractive for microscale actuation because they exhibit large, reversible, and programmable deformation. However, practical LCE microsystems remain difficult to realize due to challenges in fabricating discrete actuator arrays and achieving localized, electrically addressable actuation. Existing localized driving strategies often rely on optical stimulation, which is less practical for scalable integrated systems. In this work, we present an electrothermal LCE microactuation system enabled by lithographically integrated tungsten (W) microheaters. Surface-a

Dual-Wavelength Quantum Skyrmions from Liquid Crystal Topological Defects.

We propose a spin-orbit strategy for generating dual-wavelength quantum skyrmions realized either as entangled photon pairs at dual wavelengths or as heralded single-photon states at a given wavelength-regimes neither previously conceptualized nor demonstrated. By coupling a two-photon entangled state to an electrically tunable liquid crystal topological defect, we engineer both nonlocal and local skyrmionic topologies in a reconfigurable platform. We highlight with examples how this approach may open new directions for engineered topological quantum states that exploit the topological richnes

Testing a Liquid Crystal Visual Thermometer Device in Newborns and Young Infants.

Objective Severe neonatal jaundice is a major cause of death and disability among newborns in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Filtered sunlight phototherapy (FSPT) is safe and effective but requires hourly temperature monitoring to detect hyperthermia/hypothermia. This need for close temperature monitoring by family members and community health extension workers is impeding FSPT scale-up in LMICs, where healthcare providers are scarce and nurseries are understaffed. The ability of a caregiver to accurately measure temperature can affect infant health outcomes in many other illnesses

Chiral Liquid-Crystal-Based Concave Holographic Spectrometer on a Curved Substrate.

Chiral liquid crystals (CLCs) self-assemble into a helical structure and can efficiently reflect circularly polarized light with corresponding handedness. Utilizing a curved glass substrate and polymerization of photoaligned CLCs, the operation of focusing and diffraction of incident light can be performed efficiently by a single component. When focusing and diffraction in a planar CLC cell are combined between two glass plates, the imaging suffers from astigmatism in the resulting spectrum. In this work, we demonstrate the operation of a spectrometer with low astigmatism using a polymerized C
