[Pigmentary mosaicism: a literature review].

Pigmentary mosaicism (PM) refers to various developmental patterns of skin pigmentation. It can present as a hypopigmented, hyperpigmented, or mixed form combining both types (cutis tricolor). In about one-third of cases, PM is associated with extracutaneous manifestations, most often neurological. The cause of PM is primarily genetic, including chromosomal mosaicism, mosaic intragenic pathogenic variants, as well as epigenetic mosaicism in females carrying a pathogenic variant on the X chromosome. This article summarizes recent literature in order to better identify the underlying causes and

Seal finger: a literature review.

Seal finger is a rare zoonotic bacterial infection typically caused by Mycoplasma species, transmitted from seals (Pinnipedia suborder) to humans. First documented in 1907, this disease remains under-researched despite growing relevance as humans increasingly encroach on Arctic regions. We conducted a review of multiple databases to evaluate its history, prevalence, at-risk populations, and treatment options. The infection primarily affects individuals who have close contact with marine mammals, including fishers, hunters, sealers, and marine biologists. Seal finger usually presents similarly

Sensory Strabismus; A Literature Review.

Persistent unilateral or bilateral visual deprivation at any age, particularly in children, can compromise sensory fusion and result in a type of strabismus known as sensory or secondary strabismus. There are several pathologies that can induce visual impairment, such as severe anisometropia, congenital unilateral cataract, corneal opacity, retinal diseases, and optic nerve anomalies. Sensory strabismus may be horizontal or vertical or a combination of them; however, most reports indicate the development of horizontal deviation as sensory strabismus. Regardless of the direction of the sensory

The critical care literature 2023.

The number of critically ill patients that present to emergency departments across the world continues to rise. In fact, the proportion of critically ill patients in emergency departments is now higher than pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels. [1] The emergency physician (EP) is typically the first physician to evaluate and resuscitate the critically ill patient. Given the continued shortage of intensive care unit (ICU) beds, persistent staff shortages, and overall inefficient hospital throughput, EPs are often tasked with providing intensive care to these patients long beyond the initial resuscitati

The critical care literature 2021.

An emergency physician (EP) is often the first provider to evaluate, resuscitate, and manage a critically ill patient. Over the past two decades, the annual hours of critical care delivered in emergency departments across the United States has dramatically increased. During the period from 2006 to 2014, the extent of critical care provided in the emergency department (ED) to critically ill patients increased approximately 80%. During the same time period, the number of intubated patients cared for in the ED increased by approximately 16%. In addition to seeing more critically ill patients, EPs

Comprehensive literature review of monkeypox.

The current outbreak of monkeypox (MPX) infection has emerged as a global matter of concern in the last few months. MPX is a zoonosis caused by the MPX virus (MPXV), which is one of the Orthopoxvirus species. Thus, it is similar to smallpox caused by the variola virus, and smallpox vaccines and drugs have been shown to be protective against MPX. Although MPX is not a new disease and is rarely fatal, the current multi-country MPX outbreak is unusual because it is occurring in countries that are not endemic for MPXV. In this work, we reviewed the extensive literature available on MPXV to summari

Duodenal Pseudomelanosis: A Literature Review.

Duodenal pseudomelanosis (also known as pseudomelanosis duodeni) is a rare endoscopic incidental finding defined by a pigmentation limited to the apex of the intestinal villi, which requires histological confirmation. While its exact pathogenesis is still poorly understood, it appears free from clinical consequences. This condition is believed to be associated with oral iron intake, antihypertensive drugs containing a sulfur moiety (i.e., hydralazine, furosemide), and several chronic diseases (i.e., hypertension, end-stage renal disease, diabetes). However, the exact prevalence of these treatm

Hallux varus: A literature review.

Hallux varus is a rare foot deformity due to iatrogenic, post-traumatic, idiopathic, inflammatory, spontaneous, or congenital pathologies. Acquired hallux varus, in particular, iatrogenic type, is the commonest. The primary pathology is the abnormal musculotendinous forces secondary to soft tissue or bony imbalance exerting varus deforming force. Understanding the anatomy of the hallux stabilisers and the pathophysiology of hallux varus is vital in its management. It would be helpful to understand the potential surgical pitfalls leading to iatrogenic hallux varus. This literature review summar

Influenza Myocarditis: A Literature Review.

Viral myocarditis is not uncommon but the role of the influenza virus in causing myocarditis is less studied. It is difficult to diagnose influenza myocarditis. Due to bacterial and viral co-infection during influenza outbreaks, it becomes more difficult to distinguish influenza myocarditis from other causes. Our article provides current information on influenza myocarditis. We did a literature search using appropriate terms and reviewed articles published by November 2020. Our study highlights the incidence of influenza myocarditis and the need to become aware of this condition, especially du
