Vascular complication of liver abscess are rare but life-threatening. We herein report a 2 year 9 month boy with pyogenic hepatic abscess complicated by inferior vena cava thrombus extending to right atrium. Early clinical suspicion aided by ultrasonography and echocardiography confirmed the diagnosis. The child was treated successfully with timely medical and surgical intervention.

AIM: To compare the clinical characteristics of pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) in patients with and without hepatic neoplasm (HN).
METHODS: Authors performed a retrospective analysis involving patients with PLA. The demographic, clinical features, laboratory and imaging findings, management and outcome of patients with and without HN were studied.
RESULTS: From January 2000 to December 2009 inclusive, 318 patients (35 with HN) had PLA, and mean age and comorbidity were comparable between the two groups. More patients with HN experienced right upper quadrant pain (68.6% vs. 52.7%, P < 0.04), de

This is a report of a rare case of bilateral exudative retinal detachment occurring in a young Nigerian male with pyogenic liver abscess. Detailed ocular and clinical examination with biochemical, haematological and microbiological studies of the blood and liver aspirate were done. Ocular and abdominal scan plus surgical drainage of abscess were also done. The main features were febrile illness with hepatomegaly and sudden loss of eyesight. Visual acuity was light perception in both eyes. The cardiovascular and renal systems were normal. Ocular scan showed bilateral bullous retinal detachment

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) and hepatitis A are common in developing countries. As there is an overlap of clinical features, a diagnosis of dual infection can be missed. Here, we present the case of a five-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain, fever, and jaundice diagnosed as a complicated liver abscess with concurrent hepatitis A. To our knowledge, this is the first case where a PLA co-existed with hepatitis A. Simultaneous infection should be considered when a patient with liver abscess presents with jaundice, especially in areas where both diseases are endemic. Early diagnosis o

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyse the epidemiological, aetiological and clinical characteristics of pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) occurring in Oman. The intention was to obtain the information needed for the adequate liver abscess (LA) empirical treatment. LA can develop as a complication of hepatobiliary disease or other intraabdominal infections, but more recently, it is associated with primary and secondary liver malignancies and their treatment.
METHODS: This retrospective study took place in the Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman. Consecutive patients treated for LA from January 2013 to D

Pyogenic liver abscesses (PLA) are an uncommon, but potentially life-threatening infection. Although the link between amebic liver abscesses and obstructive jaundice is well documented, there are few cases of PLA leading to this complication. We present a case of multiple massive PLA and obstructive jaundice on initial presentation. The patient was treated for six weeks with antibiotics and percutaneous drains placed in the largest abscesses and was discharged after clinical improvement and resolution of the hyperbilirubinemia. This case highlights the importance of clinician awareness of othe

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic liver abscesses most commonly occur in males in -he sixth decade, are usually associated with biliary tract disease, malignancy and immunosuppression and the mortality rate is high. We describe another form of pyogenic abscess occurring in females which, if treated aggressively, carries a much better prognosis.
METHODS: Between 1986 and 1993 we treated 8 patients with multiple pyogenic liver abscesses. Diagnosis was established by ultrasound and CT scan followed by needle aspiration to confirm pus. Amoebic aetiology was excluded by a serology, poor response to metronidazo

BACKGROUND: Malignant and benign hepatic diseases may both present with systemic symptoms and necrotic liver cavities. Although rare and reported predominantly in East Asia, pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) can represent the initial manifestation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), as necrotic tumors may mimic infectious abscesses.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old Italian man presented with a 2-week history of fever and right upper quadrant pain. Computed tomography revealed a multiloculated lesion with irregular margins and a solid component in the right hepatic lobe, suggestive of a liver absces

A 12-year-old girl with liver abscesses was confirmed to have a rare complication, abscess-duodenal fistula formation, which was demonstrated on performing fluoroscope-guided percutaneous drainage. She was successfully treated with percutaneous drainage and antibiotics. The incidence, etiology, diagnosis and clinical management of pyogenic liver abscess in children are discussed.

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) of biliary origin in Southeast Asia mainly occurs in patients with intrahepatic bile duct stone (IBDS) and extrahepatic bile duct stone (EBDS), bilioenteric anastomosis, or biliary stent. IBDS, as an endemic to Southeast Asia, remains a frequent etiology of acute cholangitis and PLA. PLA related to IBDS is characterized by high incidences of PLA recurrence and death related to infection, and difficulties in diagnosis of concomitant cholangicarcinoma. PLA of biliary origin is more likely caused by Escherichia coli, more often presented as polymicrobial infections, a

PURPOSE: To retrospectively compare the computed tomographic (CT) features of liver abscesses caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae with those caused by other bacterial pathogens.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board, with waiver of informed consent. Hospital records of all patients with a diagnosis of liver abscess between July 2003 and July 2010 were retrieved from an electronic hospital database. One hundred and thirty-one consecutive patients with confirmed pyogenic liver abscesses were studied. Data on clinical presentation, comorbid co

OBJECTIVES: Pyogenic liver abscesses remain an important and life-threatening clinical problem but their causes and management have changed over the last two decades. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and the impact of an endoscopic approach in the management of liver abscesses with suspected biliary origin.
METHODS: We reviewed the records of 16 patients suffering from pyogenic liver abscess, who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in the setting of biliary diseases between January 1995 and December 2004. Nine patients had an underlying neoplasti

OBJECTIVE: to determine the clinical, microbiological, diagnostic and therapeutic characteristics of pyogenic liver abscesses of bacterial origin.
METHODS: retrospective analysis of pyogenic liver abscesses diagnosed at the Aránzazu Hospital in San Sebastián (northern Spain) between 1989 and 1998.
RESULTS: we studied 45 patients with pyogenic liver abscesses of bacterial origin (30 men, 15 women, mean age 61 years 11 months). The site of the liver abscess was biliary in 28.9% of the patients, portal in 11.1%, and unknown in 33.3%. Elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (95.5%), leukocytosis

A possible association of the acute toxemic form of schistosomiasis and pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) has been recently suggested. As in the west of the Espírito Santo state schistosomiasis is endemic and PLA are frequently diagnosed in the Children's Hospital of Vitória we reviewed the records of the Hospital during the period from May 1991 to April 1993 to: a) identify all cases of PLA in which Schistosoma mansoni infection was present and b) annotate the procedence of each case to verify if there is an association of the two diseases. 65 cases of PLA were recorded and 39 had the result of a

We blindly compared the sonographic findings in amebic (112 lesions) and pyogenic (30 lesions) liver abscesses. Two sonographic features were significantly more prevalent in amebic abscesses: the lesions had a round or oval shape and the lesions had an echogenicity that was lower than that of normal liver and were internally homogeneous on high-gain scans. Amebic abscesses were round or oval in 92 instances (82%), while 18 pyogenic abscesses (60%) (p less than .01) had these shapes. Fifty-nine (58%) of 101 amebic abscesses displayed low echogenicity and homogeneous internal echoes with high-ga

Hepatic tuberculosis can mimic pyogenic liver abscess, particularly in patients with uncontrolled diabetes. Persistent or atypical hepatic lesions unresponsive to antibiotics should prompt tissue diagnosis using histopathology and molecular assays like GeneXpert to ensure timely diagnosis and appropriate management.

INTRODUCTION: Purulent bacterial pericarditis is a potentially fatal disease with mortality rates reaching 100% if left untreated.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 33-year-old Caucasian male patient who developed cardiac tamponade, most likely caused by a pyogenic liver abscess communicating with the pericardium. Treatment with antibiotics, extended sepsis therapy, and drainage of the abscess led to a full recovery.
CONCLUSION: This report describes a rare but potentially fatal differential diagnosis of aortic dissection and serves as a reminder that lives abscesses can manifest u
