Odontogenesis and amelogenesis in interacting lizard-quail tissue combinations.

In this study we examined the possible inductive role of the dental papilla from polyphyodont lizard tooth germs. Flank skin sheets of quail ectoderm enzymatically separated from dermal tissue were recombined with lizard tooth papillae and placed on semisolid medium and cultured for 2 days. Subsequently, the recombinants were removed and placed on the chorioallantoic membrane of chick hosts and incubated for 6 days. After this period of 8 days in explant, control tissues differentiated according to their own phenotypes. Lizard dental papilla alone differentiated as fibroblasts. Quail flank ski

Patterns of afferent synaptic contacts in the alligator lizard's cochlea.

Afferent synapses on both free-standing and tectorial hair cells in the alligator lizard's cochlea are described quantitatively. Semiserial sections were photographed with a transmission electron microscope. Hair cells together with their afferent nerves were reconstructed and morphometrically analyzed with the aid of a computer. Each afferent nerve forms many synapses with its hair cell. Tectorial afferents make more than twice the number of synapses with their hair cells as do free-standing afferents. This suggests a possible neuroanatomical basis for the physiological difference in synchron

Endolymphatic and intracellular resting potential in the alligator lizard cochlea.

Endolymphatic potential (EP) and intracellular resting potentials (RPs) in the cochlea of the alligator lizard were measured with micropipets. The EP (defined as the dc electric potential recorded between the endolymph in scala media and the perilymph in scala tympani or scala vestibuli) had a mean value of +16 mV (in 96 ears). The RPs (defined as the dc potentials recorded between the intracellular and perilymphatic spaces) were different in the distal portion of the cochlear nerve (range to -56 mV, mean of -23 mV in 158 cells) from those in the region of the basilar papilla (range to -154 mV

Genomic signatures of adaptation in native lizards exposed to human-introduced fire ants.

Understanding the process of genetic adaptation in response to human-mediated ecological change will help elucidate the eco-evolutionary impacts of human activity. In the 1930s red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) were accidently introduced to the Southeastern USA, where today they are both venomous predators and toxic prey to native eastern fence lizards (Sceloporus undulatus). Here, we investigate potential lizard adaptation to invasive fire ants by generating whole-genome sequences from 420 lizards across three populations: one with long exposure to fire ants, and two unexposed popul

Wall lizards display conspicuous signals to conspecifics and reduce detection by avian predators.

Visual signals are often under conflicting selection to be hidden from predators while being conspicuous to mates and rivals. Here, we investigated whether 3 different island populations of Aegean wall lizards (Podarcis erhardii) with variable coloration among diverse island habitats exhibit simultaneous camouflage and sexual signals. We examined whether signals appear better tuned to conspecific vision as opposed to that of avian predators, and whether background-matching camouflage and sexual signals are partitioned to specific body regions. This could facilitate both covert sexual signaling

Prevalence of antibodies against Leptospira sp. in snakes, lizards and turtles in Slovenia.

BACKGROUND: Leptospiral infections in poikilothermic (cold blooded) animals have received very little attention and the literature concerning natural infections of these animals is limited. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of leptospiral antibodies in reptiles, imported into Slovenia and intended to be pets in close contact with humans. A total of 297 reptiles (22 snakes, 210 lizards and 65 turtles) were tested for specific antibodies against serovars of Leptospira interrogans sensu stricto using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Live cultures of different serovars

Role of suprachiasmatic nuclei in circadian and light-entrained behavioral rhythms of lizards.

To establish whether the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the Ruin lizard (Podarcis sicula) play a role in entrainment of circadian rhythms to light, we examined the effects of exposure to 24-h light-dark (LD) cycles on the locomotor behavior of lizards with SCN lesions. Lizards became arrhythmic in response to complete SCN lesion under constant temperature and constant darkness (DD), and they remained arrhythmic after exposure to LD cycles. Remnants of SCN tissue in other lesioned lizards were sufficient to warrant entrainment to LD cycles. Hence, the SCN of Ruin lizards are essential both to

Seasonal activity and energetics of two species of varanid lizards in tropical Australia.

The field metabolic rates (FMR) and rates of water flux were measured in two species of varanid lizards over five periods of the year in tropical Australia. The energetics of these species were further investigated by directly measuring activity (locomotion) and body temperatures of free-ranging animals by radiotelemetry, and by measuring standard metabolic rate (over a range of body temperatures) and activity metabolism in the laboratory. Seasonal differences in the activity and energetics were found in these goannas despite similar, high daytime temperatures throughout the year in tropical A

The pineal complex, aggressive behavior and thermoregulation in curly-tailed lizards, Leiocephalus carinatus.

Male Leiocephalus carinatus exhibited five types of aggressive displays, two of which were used to quantify aggression in paired encounters. After the dominant and subordinate lizard were identified, the area over parietal eye/pineal gland of the latter was shielded. This resulted in the subordinate lizard selecting higher body temperatures, exhibiting more assertive displays toward the dominant lizard, and increasing its frequency of use of a heat source that was the limited resource, as defined in the test arena. All of these responses required 4-6 days to be expressed and were reversed when

A Surgical Method for Oocyte Injection and CRISPR-Cas9 Mutagenesis in Anolis Lizards.

Squamates, the taxon that comprises lizards and snakes, are a diverse assemblage of reptiles represented by more than 11,000 described species. Studies of gene function in squamates, however, have remained very limited, largely due to the lack of established genetic tools and suitable experimental systems. A major challenge for the development of CRISPR-based gene editing in these reptiles is that the isolation of fertilized oocytes or single-celled embryos is impractical for most species, given that fertilization occurs internally, the females of many species can store sperm, and simple metho

How Small, Arboreal Lizards Run on Water: Surface Tension, Morphology, Behavior, and Kinematics.

The vast majority of water-walking animals are tiny invertebrates. Most water running vertebrates are larger and specialized for this behavior. As size increases, the role of surface tension decreases and inertial mechanisms dominate. We report how Anolis sagrei, a small, quadrupedal, arboreal lizard with adhesive pads runs on water, using behavioral observations, high-speed video, and decreasing surface tension with a surfactant. We quantified how frequently anoles ran on water, and if this was affected by reduced surface tension. We also compared their running performance and kinematics in t

Introduced Urban Lizards (Podarcis muralis) Exhibit Plastic Activity Patterns and Precise Behavioral Thermoregulation.

AbstractEffective thermoregulation is important for most ectotherms, as body temperature determines the rate of nearly all physiological processes. However, for most organisms, we lack an understanding of which environmental factors affect thermoregulatory behaviors, especially outside of a laboratory setting and over an entire day. Introduced populations of the common wall lizard (Podarcis muralis) in Cincinnati, Ohio, are thriving after an introduction almost 75 years ago. To noninvasively quantify daily thermoregulatory behaviors and thermoregulatory effectiveness, we used infrared thermogr

Captive lizards (Squamata: Sauria) as reservoirs of medically important and antifungal-resistant yeasts.

Zoological collections represent unique environments in which captivity-related alterations of host microbiota may increase susceptibility to infectious diseases. While reptiles are recognized reservoirs of microorganisms, data on quantitative yeast colonization and antifungal susceptibility in captive lizards remain limited. This study assessed 28 lizards belonging to nine species housed in a zoological park in southern Italy. Skin and cloacal swabs (n = 56) revealed yeast growth in 75% of animals and 57.1% of samples, with positivity rates of 60.7% and 53.6% for skin and cloacal samples, res

New host and locality records of helminths' infection of seven lizards from Morocco.

Morocco has a great diversity of reptiles; more than 26% of the herpetofauna species are considered to be endemic. Nevertheless, there is little information available on helminth parasites of Moroccan lizards. The purpose of this article is to establish a helminth list using non-invasive methods for natural populations of seven lizard species: Acanthodactylus maculatus, Chalcides mionecton, Chalcides montanus, Chalcides polylepis, Quedenfeldtia moerens, Quedenfeldtia trachyblepharus, and Tarentola mauritanica. For each species, prevalence and intensity of infection were given as well as their

Nonglycemic Effects of GLP-1 Agonists: From a Starling to Lizards to People.

With the approval of exenatide in 2005, physicians had a new class of hypoglycemic agents available for the treatment of type 2 diabetes-the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (or GLP-1 receptor agonists). As of this writing, there are seven drugs in this class available in the United States. In addition to demonstrating either cardiovascular risk neutrality or overt benefit, as now mandated by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), many of these drugs have other, unexpected actions. It is our goal to outline these actions, some beneficial, some not. We have reviewed Engl

Subtropical hibernation in juvenile tegu lizards (Salvator merianae): insights from intestine redox dynamics.

Juvenile tegu lizards (Salvator merianae) experience gradual and mild temperature changes from autumn to winter in their habitat. This tropical/subtropical reptile enter a state of dormancy, with an 80% reduction in metabolic rate, that remains almost constant during winter. The redox metabolism in non-mammalian vertebrates that hibernate under such distinguished conditions is poorly understood. We analyzed the redox metabolism in the intestine of juvenile tegus during different stages of their first annual cycle. The effect of food deprivation (in spring) was also studied to compare with fast
