Lacazia loboi (syn. Loboa loboi), the etiological agent of lobomycosis, was compared in human and dolphin tissue using light and electron microscopy, and computer-assisted morphometrics. The histological features of the lesions were similar; however, preliminary electron microscopy data indicates that cell wall destruction may vary in the two hosts. Calcofluor stained tissue sections of human and dolphin tissue were examined with UV light microscopy and the images digitized. Measurements of area, minimum and maximum diameters, and perimeter were made. Student's t-test (alpha = 0.01) revealed t

Cutaneous granulomas in dolphins were believed to be caused by Lacazia loboi, which also causes a similar disease in humans. This hypothesis was recently challenged by reports that fungal DNA sequences from dolphins grouped this pathogen with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. We conducted phylogenetic analysis of fungi from 6 bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) with cutaneous granulomas and chains of yeast cells in infected tissues. Kex gene sequences of P. brasiliensis from dolphins showed 100% homology with sequences from cultivated P. brasiliensis, 73% with those of L. loboi, and 93% with

Jorge Lobo's disease is a chronic infection caused by the fungus Lacazia loboi endemic in South America. The infection is characterized by the appearance of parakeloidal, ulcerated or verrucous nodular or plaque-like cutaneous lesions. The histopathological aspect is characterized by poorly organized granulomas with histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells. Little is known about local immune response in lobomycosis skin lesions. Thirty-three skin biopsies from patients with Jorge Lobo's disease were selected from Ambulatory of Dermatology, UFPA. The control group was constituted by ten biops

Fungal infections are still underappreciated and their prevalence is underestimated, which renders them a serious public health problem. Realistic discussions about their distribution, symptoms, and control can improve management and diagnosis and contribute to refinement of preventive actions using currently available tools. This article represents an overview of dermatophytes and endemic fungi that cause infections in humans and animals. In addition, the impact of climate change on the fungal spread is discussed. The endemic fungal infections characterized in this article include coccidioido

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The increase in international travel in recent decades has contributed to the risk of acquiring diseases considered endemic to a region or country and the change in the epidemiology of these diseases. Endemic mycoses that may be acquired by travelers in the short or long term are endemic subcutaneous mycoses such as sporotrichosis and lobomycosis, while endemic systemic mycoses are a group of serious diseases including histoplasmosis and coccidioidomycosis. Herein, we review the current knowledge and highlight the most important aspects of these fungal infections in traveler

One of the unique aspects of infectious disease is its wide variety, both in time and place. The specialist practicing in India may have little or no expertise in Peruvian disease. A colleague in New York may be called upon to diagnose and treat conditions originating in Africa, Asia, South America, Fiji and Papua, New Guinea. At the same time, this colleague must be familiar with the pathogens that originate in Texas, Hawaii, and Canada. Indeed, even the full-time infectious diseases specialist may not be conversant in diseases such as lagochilascariasis, louping ill, and lobomycosis. War, fa

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a chronic neglected fungal disease, usually met in tropical areas. French Guiana is a South American territory with limited epidemiological data. This retrospective study concerned all patients with CBM proven by at least one paraclinical examination and diagnosed in French Guiana between 1950 and 2023. In total, 23 patients were included, mostly males (87%) of Creole origin, living in the coastal region (87%) and involved in outdoor occupations (74%). Lesions were mostly observed on the lower limbs (78.3%), with a median time to diagnosis of four years. Laboratory

Some believe that asteroid bodies (AB) in sporotrichosis are nonspecific and are equivalent to the AB of sarcoidosis and other granulomatous diseases. We studied 25 skin biopsy specimens of sporotrichosis in which AB were demonstrated, ten of them with Sporothrix-positive culture. Immunohistochemistry was performed in paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens using an anti-Sporothrix antibody. The same procedures were done with seven biopsy specimens of lobomycosis, which contained AB within giant cells. These did not react with the anti-Sporothrix antibody, and by electron microscopy they displayed

BACKGROUND: Jorge Lobo's disease (JLD) is a cutaneous chronic mycosis caused by Lacazia loboi. We studied Factor XIIIa + dermal dendrocytes (FXIIIa + DD), Langerhans cells (LC) through the expression of langerin and the expression of S100 protein.
METHODS: A total of 41 biopsies and 10 normal skins (control) were developed with a polymer-based immunohistochemical method.
RESULTS: Lesions presented infiltrate comprising macrophages, some asteroid corpuscles, lymphocytes, multinucleated giant cells and a large number of fungi. LCs presented short dendrites and were scarcely distributed. Dermal

From 2003 to 2015, 360 free-ranging Atlantic bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus inhabiting the Indian River Lagoon (IRL, n = 246), Florida, and coastal waters of Charleston (CHS, n = 114), South Carolina, USA, were captured, given comprehensive health examinations, and released as part of a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional study of individual and population health. The aim of this review is to summarize the substantial health data generated by this study and to examine morbidity between capture sites and over time. The IRL and CHS dolphin populations are affected by complex infect

The tropical verrucous syndrome includes infectious, chronic, and granulomatous skin conditions appearing with plaques, nodules, or ulcers with a warty surface which gives name to the syndrome. It includes forms of chromoblastomycosis, sporotrichosis, paracoccidioidomycosis, lobomycosis, leishmaniasis, and tuberculosis verrucosa cutis with ample distribution in tropical and subtropical areas. The diagnoses may be difficult and confused among them, especially between sporotrichosis and leishmaniasis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the protein-calorie malnutrition in BALB/c isogenic mice infected with Lacazia loboi, employing nutritional and histopathological parameters. Four groups were composed: G1: inoculated with restricted diet, G2: not inoculated with restricted diet, G3: inoculated with regular diet, G4: not inoculated with regular diet. Once malnutrition had been imposed, the animals were inoculated intradermally in the footpad and after four months, were sacrificed for the excision of the footpad, liver and spleen. The infection did not exert great influence o

Lacaziosis (lobomycosis) is a skin disease caused by Lacazia loboi, occurring naturally only in humans and dolphins. Attempts to culture the pathogen in vitro have been unsuccessful, and inoculation studies of lacaziosis development in mice have provided only limited, short-term data on the progression and propagation of L. loboi. The present study used photographic data from long-term photo-identification and health assessment projects to model and quantify the progression of lacaziosis lesions in 3 common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from Sarasota Bay, Florida, USA. Paracoccidioidomycosis ceti (PCMC), also called lobomycosis, is a cutaneous disease affecting cetaceans worldwide. It is caused by Paracoccidioides ceti, an uncultivable fungal species recently classified within the Paracoccidioides genus. Although several molecular markers have been used to investigate the PCMC pathogen, the alpha-tubulin gene (TUB1), commonly utilized in genetic studies of cultivable Paracoccidioides, has remained unexplored in this taxon. In this study, we applied a nested polymerase chain reaction targeting TUB1 to amplify fungal sequences from two new cases of PCMC in Bra

Lacaziosis (lobomycosis; Lacazia loboi) is a fungal skin disease that naturally occurs only in humans and dolphins. The first reported case of lacaziosis in a bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus occurred in 1970 in Sarasota Bay, Florida, USA, and subsequent photo-ID monitoring of the Sarasota Bay dolphin population has revealed persistence of the disease. The objectives of this study were to estimate lacaziosis prevalence (P) in 2 bottlenose dolphin populations on the west coast of Florida (Sarasota Bay and Charlotte Harbor) and compare disease occurrence to other published estimates of laca

UNLABELLED: Fungal infections are common in tropical countries and can have an important impact on public health. Lobomycosis is a common fungal infection in the tropical rain forest of South America, and paracoccidioidomycosis (South American blastomycosis) is a widespread and sometimes severe illness. Penicilliosis marneffei is an opportunistic infection of AIDS patients in southeast Asia. Chromoblastomycosis and mycetomas are causes of morbidity around the world. Sporotrichosis is a worldwide subcutaneous mycosis with a high incidence in tropical countries and is an important illness in imm

Lacaziosis, formerly called as lobomycosis, is a zoonotic mycosis, caused by Lacazia loboi, found in humans and dolphins, and is endemic in the countries on the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean of Japanese coast. Susceptible Cetacean species include the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), the Indian Ocean bottlenose dolphin (T. aduncus), and the estuarine dolphin (Sotalia guianensis); however, no cases have been recorded in other Cetacean species. We diagnosed a case of Lacaziosis in a Pacific white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens) nursing in an aquarium in Japan.

The viability of the currently unculturable fungal pathogen Lacazia loboi can be determined by means of fluorescein diacetate-ethidium bromide (FD-EB) staining. This technique can be used in experimental study of the mycosis, in attempts to cultivate the fungus and in attempts to gauge the success of therapies. In the present study, the potential applications of FD-EB vital staining were studied using a proposed murine experimental model of lobomycosis. BALB/c mice were inoculated in the footpads with an L. loboi suspension that appeared in FD-EB staining to have lost viability after being hel
