Working memory and active sampling of the environment: Medial temporal contributions.

Working memory (WM) refers to the ability to maintain and actively process information-either derived from perception or long-term memory (LTM)-for intelligent thought and action. This chapter focuses on the contributions of the temporal lobe, particularly medial temporal lobe (MTL) to WM. First, neuropsychological evidence for the involvement of MTL in WM maintenance is reviewed, arguing for a crucial role in the case of retaining complex relational bindings between memorized features. Next, MTL contributions at the level of neural mechanisms are covered-with a focus on WM encoding and mainte

Functional Connectivity during Encoding Predicts Individual Differences in Long-Term Memory.

What is the neural basis of individual differences in the ability to hold information in long-term memory (LTM)? Here, we first characterize two whole-brain functional connectivity networks based on fMRI data acquired during an n-back task that robustly predict individual differences in two important forms of LTM, recognition and recollection. We then focus on the recognition memory model and contrast it with a working memory model. Although functional connectivity during the n-back task also predicts working memory performance and the two networks have some shared components, they are also la

Neurocognitive Architecture of Working Memory.

A crucial role for working memory in temporary information processing and guidance of complex behavior has been recognized for many decades. There is emerging consensus that working-memory maintenance results from the interactions among long-term memory representations and basic processes, including attention, that are instantiated as reentrant loops between frontal and posterior cortical areas, as well as sub-cortical structures. The nature of such interactions can account for capacity limitations, lifespan changes, and restricted transfer after working-memory training. Recent data and models

The role of executive functions in long-term memory: case report.

The role of executive functions in long-term memory has been studied. We describe a single-case study, consisting of a 45-year-old male patient, hospitalized for right frontal stroke. After the stroke, the patient had memory alterations in everyday activities. However, performance in short-term memory tests was not significantly altered. Long-term memory assessments included pre- and post-stroke episodic, semantic, and procedural memories. Specific skills involved in the acquisition of new learning (auditory-verbal and visual reproduction) were also evaluated, as well as executive functions. T

Shared Representational Formats for Information Maintained in Working Memory and Information Retrieved from Long-Term Memory.

Current theories propose that the short-term retention of information in working memory (WM) and the recall of information from long-term memory (LTM) are supported by overlapping neural mechanisms in occipital and parietal cortex. However, the extent of the shared representations between WM and LTM is unclear. We designed a spatial memory task that allowed us to directly compare the representations of remembered spatial information in WM and LTM with carefully matched behavioral response precision between tasks. Using multivariate pattern analyses on functional magnetic resonance imaging data

Developmental dyslexia: How taxonomic and thematic organization affect working memory recall.

Semantic long-term memory (LTM) representations can be distinguished in two main classes: taxonomic (i.e., abstract) and thematic (i.e., concrete, experiential). In typically developing children, taxonomies are usually acquired after thematic representations. In the current study, we investigated how LTM semantic representations modulate working memory (WM) recall in children with developmental dyslexia (DD). A sample of children with DD from primary and secondary school paired with a control group for age, gender, schooling, and IQ was administered a semantic WM (SWM) dual task. Here, childre

Investigating the transition from recent to remote memory using advanced tools.

Remote memories, weeks to decades long, are usually the ones most important to the organism, as the longevity of a memory is tightly connected to its significance. Retrograde amnesia studies in human patients as well as lesions and immediate early gene expression investigation in animal models, suggested that the hippocampus has a time dependent role in memory consolidation. Namely, that as a memory matures it becomes independent of the hippocampus and instead depends on extra-hippocampal areas. However, accumulating evidence implies that this temporal segregation is not as rigid as originally

Hybrid neural-mechanistic modeling of leptospirosis transmission with environmental drivers: Evidence from Thailand.

Accurate infectious-disease forecasts are essential for timely public health decision-making. In this study, we develop a hybrid modeling framework that combines compartmental models with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks to estimate a key time-varying epidemiological parameter as a case study for leptospirosis in Thailand. Our framework uses an LSTM-ODE model trained on environmental covariates (rainfall, flooding, and temperature) and infected human cases to infer the transmission rate, which shows strong seasonal and environmental dependencies. The results demonstrate that including fl

Accelerated long-term forgetting in children with temporal lobe epilepsy: A timescale investigation of material specificity and executive skills.

Recently, children with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) were found to be at risk of accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF). In this study, we examined the temporal trajectory of ALF, while exploring the relationship between ALF, executive skills, and epilepsy variables. Fifty-one children, (23 with TLE and 28 typically developing) completed a battery of neuropsychological tests of verbal and visual memory, executive skills, and two experimental memory tasks (verbal and visual) involving recall after short (30-min) and extended (1-day and 2-week) delays. Enhanced lung cancer detection using BiLSTM attention and transformer models on clinical text data.

Lung cancer continues to be a major cause of death globally, making early and precise detection crucial for improving patient outcomes. In this research, we introduce an enhanced method for predicting and detecting lung cancer by combining Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) networks with an attention mechanism and transformer-based models. This hybrid model effectively tackles common issues such as overfitting, data imbalance, and long-sequence dependencies in textual clinical data. A well-curated dataset of patient medical records, including demographics, symptoms, radiology report

Is working memory a gateway to long-term memory?

Working memory (WM) has been proposed to act as a gateway into long-term memory (LTM), such that only information successfully stored in WM can be transferred into LTM. Accordingly, the capacity limit of WM should constrain the acquisition of LTM traces. Evidence for that prediction is mixed: Some studies showed that increasing WM load translated into weaker LTM of the memorized information. Others found no effect of WM load on LTM learning. Here we present the results of three experiments that comprehensively test the gateway hypothesis. All experiments included a WM test and a delayed LTM te

Long-term representational costs of overloading working memory.

Can learning too much information at once impair long-term retention of its meaning? Emerging evidence suggests that encoding too many items into working memory (WM) limits subsequent long-term memory (LTM) retrieval of their details and gist. These findings highlight a boundary condition for theories positing relatively automatic gist encoding. But how expansive is this boundary? Experiment 1 shows that it extends to older adults, despite their generally enhanced reliance on gist memory. In two older adult samples (n = 40 each), LTM gist retrieval was reduced for objects encoded in sets excee

Verbal working memory and linguistic long-term memory: Exploring the lexical cohort effect.

Numerous studies have shown that verbal working memory (vWM) performance is strongly influenced by linguistic knowledge, with items more familiar at sublexical, lexical, and/or semantic levels leading to higher vWM recall performance. Among the many different psycholinguistic variables whose impact on vWM has been studied, the lexical cohort effect is one of the few effects that has not yet been explored. The lexical cohort effect reflects the fact that words sharing their first phonemes with many other words (e.g. alcove, alligator, alcohol…) are typically responded to more slowly as compared

Different time-courses for consolidating information in working memory and long-term memory.

The formation of memory representations requires the transformation of perceptual information into stable traces via short-term consolidation. In this study, we measured the time-course of forming color-object associations in working memory (WM) and in long-term memory (LTM), and examined whether a single consolidation process supports both memory systems. Across three experiments, we estimated consolidation time-accuracy curves in WM and LTM by varying the free time to consolidate the information from 300 to 8,050 ms in a continuous reproduction task. We found that both WM and LTM showed a co

Optimising episodic encoding within segmented virtual contexts.

The encoding of episodic memories depends on segmentation; memory performance improves when segmentation is available and performance is impaired when segmentation is absent. Indeed, for episodic memories to be created, the encoding of information into long-term memory requires the experience of event boundaries (i.e., context-shifts defined by salient moments of change between packets of to-be-learned stimuli). According to this view episodic encoding, and therefore learning, is critically dependent on the nature of working memory. Motived by this theoretical framework, here we explore the ef

Identifying potential ligand-receptor interactions by integrating LSTM network and the attention mechanism for cell-cell communication prediction.

BACKGROUND: Cell-cell communication (CCC) mediated by ligand-receptor (L-R) interactions is fundamental to deciphering tissue development and disease mechanisms. While single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has advanced this field, existing computational methods for inferring CCC often suffer from limitations such as dependence on static databases and a failure to capture the sequential dependency of amino acids within proteins, which restricts their generalizability and predictive accuracy. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to develop a robust computational framework capable

The hippocampus and long-term memory.

This special issue of Cognitive Neuroscience focuses on the roles of the hippocampus during long-term memory. A discussion paper by Tallman, Clark, and Smith (this issue) found that functional connectivity of the hippocampus with the parahippocampal cortex and fusiform gyrus decreased with memory age, providing support for systems consolidation. Commentaries were received by Berdugo-Vega and Gräff (this issue), Feld and Gerchen (this issue), Gellersen and Simons (this issue), Gobbo, Mitchell-Heggs, and Tse (this issue), Gilmore, Audrain, and Martin (this issue), Kirwan (this issue), Manns (thi

Short-term metro passenger flow forecasting via decoupled spatio-temporal modeling with a diffusion-convergence graph and Swin-Enhanced LSTM.

Short‑term metro passenger flow forecasting-predicting station‑level inflow and outflow volumes is challenging, mainly due to the complexity of multimodal spatial couplings and the difficulty of modeling long‑range temporal dependencies while retaining local variations. Therefore, this paper proposes an Integrated Spatio-Temporal LSTM (IST-LSTM). IST-LSTM adopts a dual-branch architecture in which a diffusion branch explicitly models OD-driven propagation and a convergence branch captures structural aggregation among stations; these branches are coupled through a Diffusion and Convergence Grap

Predicting gut metabolites from gut microbiome and their interpretability analysis of IBD prediction based on LIME.

The pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is influenced by the gut microbiome and gut metabolite, but understanding how IBD is affected remains challenging. It is crucial to understand which features affect IBD in order to effectively diagnose the disease. Traditional technology for measuring metabolite features is time-consuming and costly. The abundance of metabolite features in IBD patients is altered depending to changes in the abundance of gut microbiome. LSTM-VAE is proposed to predict gut metabolite features using gut microbiome of IBD patients. The pathogenesis of IBD is
