[Lipid pneumonitis, a serious iatrogenic event with lubricating laxatives].

The prescription of lubricating laxatives (paraffin oil) is widespread in geriatrics because of the frequency of constipation. These molecules can cause serious adverse effects such as lipoid pneumonia, especially in subjects with swallowing disorders.

Recent Advances in Understanding the Role of Cartilage Lubrication in Osteoarthritis.

The remarkable lubrication properties of normal articular cartilage play an essential role in daily life, providing almost frictionless movements of joints. Alterations of cartilage surface or degradation of biomacromolecules within synovial fluid increase the wear and tear of the cartilage and hence determining the onset of the most common joint disease, osteoarthritis (OA). The irreversible and progressive degradation of articular cartilage is the hallmark of OA. Considering the absence of effective options to treat OA, the mechanosensitivity of chondrocytes has captured attention. As the on

Enhancement in Xerostomia Patient Salivary Lubrication Using a Mucoadhesive.

Oral lubrication mediated by mucin and protein containing salivary conditioning films (SCFs) with strong water retainability can get impaired due to disease such as xerostomia, that is, a subjective dry mouth feel associated with the changed salivary composition and low salivary flow rate. Aberrant SCFs in xerostomia patient cause difficulties in speech, mastication, and dental erosion while the prescribed artificial saliva is inadequate to solve the complications on a lasting basis. With the growing aging population, it is urgently needed to propose a new strategy to restore oral lubrication.

Mobility of Yield Stress Fluids on Lubricant-Impregnated Surfaces.

A common problem which we encounter on a daily basis is dispensing of yield stress fluids such as condiments, lotions, toothpaste, etc. from containers. Beyond consumer products, assuring the flow of yield stress fluids such as crude oil, mud, blood, paint, pharmaceutical products, and others, is essential for the respective industries. Elimination of wall-induced friction can lead to significant savings in the energy required for flow of yield stress fluids, as well as associated product loss and cleaning costs. Lubricant-impregnated surfaces (LIS) have been shown to change the dynamic behavi

The effect of vaginal lubrication on unsatisfactory results of cervical smears.

OBJECTIVE: Speculum lubrication with water-based gels before cervical smear sampling has been investigated and commented on thoroughly during the last decade. The present meta-analysis was based on randomized and quasi-randomized control trials and evaluated its impact on unsatisfactory cytologic results. We also assessed its efficacy in producing lower pain scores during speculum insertion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched MEDLINE (1966- 2013), Scopus (2004-2013), Clinicaltrials.org (1997-2013), Popline (1973-2013), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (1999-2013), and

Does additional lubrication affect condom slippage and breakage?

The risk of condom slippage (1.94%) and breakage (0.89%) among 3607 condoms was analysed with respect to the use of additional lubricant. Whether or not lubricant was used, the site at which it was applied and the type of lubricant used were all found to vary significantly with the type of sexual act(s) for which the condoms were used. Little evidence was found for differing effects of type of additional lubricant (water-based, saliva or other) or site of lubricant use (on penis/inside condom, on condom, in vagina/anus). The use of lubricant more than doubles the risk of slippage for vaginal s

Sore throat with the laryngeal mask: does the lubricant matter?

In daily anesthetic practice, the insertion of a Laryngeal Mask--airway is facilitated by means of a lubricant. Many different products are in widespread clinical use, according to personal preference or what's in or on the anesthesia trolley. This study compares four different lubricants: Xylocaine 10% spray, Silkospray, Endosgel and water. When comparing the ease of insertion of the Laryngeal Mask, the genuine lubricants proved to be superior to water. However, no single lubricant was associated with a statistically significant lower incidence of postoperative sore throat.

Graphite-like lubrication of mesothelium by oligolamellar pleural surfactant.

Six studies have been completed to reevaluate pleural surfactant as a possible boundary lubricant in mesothelial sliding. It is capable of remarkable antiwear action, giving a mean scar diameter on a standard "four-ball test" comparable to the best commercially available lubricants and reducing friction to values anticipated from lamellated solid lubricants such as graphite. Pleural surfaces displayed appreciable hydrophobicity, which was almost eliminated by rinsing with a lipid solvent from which phospholipid was recovered and quantified. These quantities indicated that equivalent of 7.3 ads

Liquid-repellent and self-repairing lubricant-grafted surfaces constructed by thiol-ene click chemistry using activated hollow silica as the lubricant reservoir.

The development of robust, stain-resistant, and self-healing liquid-repellent surfaces is a common aspiration of both consumer and industrial applications, but the existing methods suffer from limitations, such as complicated procedures, weak mechanical durability and substrate dependency. In this work, a lubricant-grafted slippery surface (LGSS) was prepared by grafting vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (Vi-PDMS) onto various substrates coated with sulfhydryl-modified hollow mesoporous silica (SH-HMS) through a thiol-ene click reaction. The uniform and intact lubricant layer can effective

Maximizing the Lubricant Film Thickness Between a Rigid Microtextured and a Smooth Deformable Surface in Relative Motion, Using a Soft Elasto-Hydrodynamic Lubrication Model.

We design a pattern of microtexture features to increase hydrodynamic pressure and lubricant film thickness in a hard-on-soft bearing. We use a soft elastohydrodynamic lubrication model to evaluate the effect of microtexture design parameters and bearing operating conditions on the resulting lubricant film thickness and find that the maximum lubricant film thickness occurs with a texture density between 10% and 40% and texture aspect ratio between 1% and 14%, depending on the bearing load and operating conditions. We show that these results are similar to those of hydrodynamic textured bearing

Friction reduction mechanism of glycerol monooleate-containing lubricants at elevated temperature - transition from physisorption to chemisorption.

The friction reduction mechanism of glycerol monooleate (GMO) was investigated under boundary lubrication with elevated temperature. Tribological performances were tested using reciprocating test rig by adding 5 wt.% GMO into Poly-alpha Olefin (PAO) base oil. Friction coefficient and wear were recorded during experiments. The used oil was evaluated by infrared detection after experiments. Results show that GMO could reduce friction coefficient at both low and high temperature. At elevated temperature, the friction coefficient of PAO-GMO blend climb up gradually, followed by a decrease tendency

The inflammatory potential of surgical glove lubricants: Biosorb, Keoflo, calcium carbonate and Hydrocote after intravitreal injection.

Surgical glove powders have been implicated in serious postoperative foreign body reactions due to contamination of the operative field. Inflammatory responses to glove lubricants or mold release agents have to date been studied to a lesser extent in ocular tissues than other body tissues, although powder contamination of intraocular lenses, with severe postoperative anterior chamber inflammatory responses, have been reported. The object of this study was to grade and quantitate the inflammatory response of surgical glove lubricants, namely Biosorb, Keoflo, calcium carbonate and Hydrocote (a h

The effect of lubricants on viability of bacillus Calmette-Guerin for intravesical immunotherapy against bladder carcinoma.

PURPOSE: The viability of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is crucial for induction of a local immune response and for effective therapy of recurrent superficial bladder carcinoma. During intravesical instillation of BCG lubricants are administered to assist catheterization, which contain bacteriostatic components that may interfere with the viability of mycobacteria. To verify this assumption, 5 commercially available lubricants were analyzed with regard to inhibition of viable BCG growth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five different lubricants and their components were co-incubated with Connaught st

Medication Lubricants for Oral Delivery of Drugs: Oral Processing Reduces Thickness, Changes Characteristics, and Improves Dissolution Profile.

Swallowing oral solid dosage forms is challenging for those who have medication swallowing difficulties, including patients with dysphagia. One option is to mix the drug (whole or crushed) with a thick vehicle (medication lubricant). Previous in vitro studies consistently suggest that thick vehicles could impact the dissolution of solid dosage forms, potentially influencing their therapeutic effectiveness, but do not account for changes that happen during oral processing and swallowing. This study aims to investigate the potential impact of medication lubricants on drug release and examine the
