Left Lung Neoplasms and Bilateral Pleural Effusion Combined Elevated Carcinoembryonic Antigen in Pleural Effusion with Negative Result of Thoracoscopy Pleural Biopsy Misdiagnosed as Lung Carcinoma Ultimately Confirmed Pulmonary Sarcomatoid Carcinoma by CT-guided Percutaneous Lung Biopsy: a Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Detection of carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) in pleural effusion has good clinical application value in differentiating benign and malignant pleural effusion, but sometimes CEA provides limited help. We report a case of a patient with left lung neoplasms combined with bilateral pleural effusion with increased CEA in the pleural effusion whose thoracoscopy pleural biopsy pathology was negative, mimicking lung carcinoma and ultimately confirmed as pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma by CT-guided percutaneous lung biopsy. METHODS: The chest computed tomography (CT) scan, thoracoscopy pleu

Stereotactic body radiotherapy with helical TomoTherapy for medically inoperable early stage primary and second-primary non-small-cell lung neoplasm: 1-year outcome and toxicity analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effectiveness of stereotactic body radiotherapy with helical TomoTherapy (T-SBRT) for treating medically inoperable primary and second-primary early stage non-small-cell lung neoplasm (SPLN) and evaluated whether the movement of organizing pneumonia (OP) within the irradiation field (IF) can be detected via analysis of radiological changes. METHODS: Patients (n = 16) treated for 1 year (2011-12) at our hospital by T-SBRT at a total dose of 60 Gy in five fractions were examined retrospectively. Outcome and toxicity were recorded and were separately descri

Standardized incidence ratios of malignant neoplasms among patients with pneumoconiosis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with pneumoconiosis, such as silicosis and asbestosis, have a high risk of lung cancer. However, whether these patients are at high risk for neoplasms other than lung cancer and mesothelioma remains inconclusive. AIMS: To examine whether patients with pneumoconiosis have a higher incidence of malignant neoplasms other than lung cancer. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study using the medical records of patients with pneumoconiosis who visited our two hospitals from 1 January 1991 through 31 December 2017. We identified the occurrence of malignant neoplasms and calculated t

[Mortality due to neoplasms in Brazil (1980/1983/1985): grouping by states, behavior and trends].

Mortality caused by neoplasms in Brazil was examined by means of official Ministry of Health data covering 26 of the Federal Units and 13 different tumoral sites and referring to the years 1980, 1983 and 1985. Both cluster analyses and those of principal components have shown heterogeneous behaviour as between the different regions of the country in relation to the 13 variants studied. The main discriminatory elements are the trachea/bronchus/lung malign neoplasms followed by those of stomach, pancreas, colon and larynx. Complementary analyses have demonstrated a tendency to an increase in the

Is long-term screening for lung cancer justified in patients with head and neck carcinoma?

OBJECTIVE: Patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) have a higher risk of second lung neoplasms than the general population. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the long-term incidence of second lung malignancies after the diagnosis of a HNSCC and to consider the convenience of the screening for lung cancer in these patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study performed on 4954 patients with an index tumor located in the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, or larynx during the period 1985-2017. RESULTS: During the follow-up period 469 patien

Lung tumors derived from ectopic tissues.

Ectopic tissues rarely occur in the lung. They include endometriosis, neurological tissue, thyroid, pancreas, and adrenal. Choristomas are very rare developmental anomalies derived from these ectopic tissues. They develop as a mass composed of histologically normal tissues that are heterotopic in the lung. Various intrapulmonary neoplasms also rarely develop from ectopic tissues. They include malignant melanoma, thymoma, meningioma, glomus tumor, germ cell neoplasms (choriocarcinoma and teratoma), and ependymoma. The clinicopathological features of these unusual pulmonary neoplasms are discuss

TRPS1 expression in neuroendocrine neoplasms of breast and other organs.

BACKGROUND: Primary neuroendocrine (NE) neoplasms of the breast are rare. In the absence of in situ carcinoma, metastasis from other organs needs to be ruled out first. TRPS1 is a recently identified marker for breast origin. In the current study, we investigated TRPS1 expression in breast neuroendocrine neoplasms, including well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumour (NET) and poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC), and compared its expression with neuroendocrine neoplasms from other organs, such as lung, gastrointestinal tract and pancreas. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 105 ca

[A patient with lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and adenocarcinoma in the same tumor of the lung].

A 60-year-old woman with no symptoms was found to have a mass shadow in the left lower lobe of the lung on chest radiography. Open lung biopsy and left lower lobectomy were performed. Histopathological study of the specimen revealed two distinct neoplasms. One tumor was a low grade B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) of the lung, while the other was an adenocarcinoma. The two neoplasms were admixed to form a composite tumor.

Problems in pathologic staging of lung cancer.

CONTEXT: Tumor stage is the most important prognostic and predictive factor for patients with lung cancer, the most lethal neoplasm in the United States. It is used by thoracic surgeons, radiation therapists, and oncologists to determine whether patients with these neoplasms will be treated surgically with curative intent or with palliative radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. OBJECTIVE: To review the variety of practical problems that can arise during the assessment of the pathologic stage and other prognostic/predictive factors included in the College of American Pathologist checklist for

Application of flow cytometry in the analysis of lymphoid disease in the lung and pleural space.

Various types of lymphoid neoplasms can occur in the lung. Lung parenchyma, the pleura or the pleural cavity can be the primary site of a lymphoid neoplasm or can be involved secondarily as a result of systemic dissemination from a separate primary site. Recognition of pulmonary lymphoid neoplasms (PLN) has increased secondary to technological advances in the medical field. Multiparameter flow cytometry (FC) is a one of the diagnostic tools that serves an essential role in the detecting and categorizing PLNs. FC allows for rapid identification and immunophenotypic characterization of PLN. In t

Pulmonary carcinoid presenting with persistent pneumothorax.

Lung neuroendocrine tumours (Lung NETs) are a rare group of pulmonary neoplasms often characterised by insidious clinical behaviour. Lung NET account for ~1%-2% of all lung malignancies in adults and 30% of all NETs. Incidence ranges from 0.2 to 2/100 000 population per year. While some patients may be asymptomatic, others may present with obstructive symptoms due to mass effect. Incidence of spontaneous pneumothorax as a complication of lung neoplasms is rare (0.05%-1.4% of all pneumothoraces). In this report, we present a case of recurrent pneumothorax due to Lung NET that was refractory to

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Patients With Thoracic Neoplasms: An Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Registry Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used in the management of severe cardiopulmonary failure, but the indication in the oncologic population has not been clearly established. Among malignant neoplasms, thoracic neoplasms are unique in their potential direct impact on cardiopulmonary function. This study aimed to better define the role of ECMO for thoracic neoplasms. METHODS: The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization registry was queried for patients older than 18 years with an International Classification of Diseases code of thoracic neoplasm during the past 2 decades

AIDS-related bronchogenic carcinoma: fact or fiction?

OBJECTIVE: Case reviews and retrospective analyses have raised the possibility of an increased frequency of primary lung carcinoma in HIV- and AIDS-infected patients. Conclusions have often been controversial and conflicting. We conducted a population-based epidemiologic study to assess the incidence of lung neoplasms in an HIV/AIDS cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Texas Department of Health generated descriptive data on lung neoplasms in HIV-AIDS patients whose conditions were diagnosed between 1990 and 1995. The cancer registry matched against all patients whose conditions were diagnosed

Oral contraceptives and neoplasms other than breast and female genital tract.

We reviewed epidemiological data on oral contraceptive (OC) use and colorectal, liver, lung and other nonfemale neoplasms. The data for colorectal cancer are suggestive of a favourable effect of OC, in the absence, however, of any duration-risk relation. Current, but not past, OC use is associated with excess risk of benign liver tumours, and a modest excess risk of liver cancer. The association with liver cancer was smaller for recent, low-dose OC. There was no evidence of an association between OC use and lung, digestive tract neoplasms other than colorectum, cutaneous malignant melanoma, th

Somatic mutations in the chromatin remodeling gene ARID1A occur in several tumor types.

Mutations in the chromatin remodeling gene ARID1A have recently been identified in the majority of ovarian clear cell carcinomas (OCCCs). To determine the prevalence of mutations in other tumor types, we evaluated 759 malignant neoplasms including those of the pancreas, breast, colon, stomach, lung, prostate, brain, and blood (leukemias). We identified truncating mutations in 6% of the neoplasms studied; nontruncating somatic mutations were identified in an additional 0.4% of neoplasms. Mutations were most commonly found in gastrointestinal samples with 12 of 119 (10%) colorectal and 10 of 100

Histomorphological and Immunohistochemical Analysis of Pleural Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Primary pleural neoplasms are rare entities compared with the pleural involvement by metastatic carcinoma. The current study aimed at investigating the complete spectrum of pleural neoplasms and differentiating between them with the aid of immunohistochemistry (IHC). METHODS: Consecutive pleural biopsy specimens positive for a neoplasm, both primary and metastatic, were included in the study. Diagnosis or a differential diagnosis was suggested on histopathology confirmed by a panel of IHC markers such ascytokeratin(AE1/AE3), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA),vimentin, c
