Molluscicidal potential of Heterorhabditis baujardi (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae), strain LPP7, on Lymnaea columella (Gastropoda: Pulmonata): An alternative for biological control of fasciolosis.

This study elucidated for the first time, under laboratory conditions, the susceptibility of Lymnaea columella to infective juveniles of Heterorhabditis baujardi LPP7. Exposure to the nematodes induced an average mortality rate of 66.66% in the population of L. columella, with the highest values attained from the second week after exposure onward. In addition, all the reproductive parameters analyzed (total number of eggs, number of egg masses, number of eggs laid/snail, embryo hatching rate and content of galactogen stored in the albumen gland) changed as a result of the infection. The result

Fasciola gigantica and F hepatica: a comparative study of some characteristics of Fasciola infection in Lymnaea truncatula infected by either of the two trematodes.

Experimental infections were carried out using three Lymnaea truncatula populations and two Fasciola species in order to determine the trematode influence on six parameters of snail infection by either of the two trematodes. All experiments were performed using snails 4 mm long, two miracidia for each L truncatula, and a constant temperature of 20 degrees C. No significant influence of trematode species was detected in the following parameters: snail survival at day 30, the life span of infected snails (from miracidial exposure to snail death), the increase in shell length throughout the exper

Functional morphology of the neuroendocrine sodium influx-stimulating peptide system of the pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis, studied by in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry.

The functional morphology of the neuroendocrine system producing sodium influx-stimulating (SIS) peptide in the pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis, was studied by in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry. The SIS-peptide, which is 76 amino acids long, stimulates sodium uptake from the ambient medium. Two synthetic DNA probes were used for in situ hybridization. The nucleotide sequences were chosen from the cDNA structure; they encode amino acids 8-17 and 64-73, respectively. SIS-peptide sequences 10-20 and 67-76 were synthesized and antibodies were raised to them and affinity-purified. In addi

Cholinergic interneurons in the feeding system of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis. II. N1 interneurons make cholinergic synapses with feeding motoneurons.

The N1 neurons are a population of interneurons active during the protraction phase of the feeding rhythm. All the N1 neurons are coupled by electrical synapses which persist in a high Mg/low Ca saline which blocks chemical synapses. Individual N1 spikes produce discrete electrotonic postsynaptic potentials (PSPS) in other N1 cells, but the coupling is not strong enough to ensure 1:1 firing. Bursts of N1 spikes generate compound PSPS in the feeding motoneurons. The sign (excitation or inhibition) of the N1 input corresponds with the synaptic barrage recorded during the protraction phase. Comparative studies on the productivity of Fasciola gigantica and F. hepatica sporocysts in Lymnaea tomentosa that died after a cercarial shedding or without emission.

A histology study was performed on Fasciola gigantica- or F. hepatica-infected Lymnaea tomentosa that died after a cercarial shedding or without emission to compare the parasite productivity of each trematode. Degenerated rediae increased in number throughout the experiment. Their number rose rapidly after day 79 in snails that died after shedding in the F. gigantica group; they increased more slowly in snails that died without shedding. In the F. hepatica group the number rose after day 63 in the former snails and after day 79 in the latter. The contents of normal rediae evolved inversely. Th

Elimination of Biomphalaria pfeifferi, Bulinus tropicus and Lymnaea natalensis by the ampullarid snail, Marisa cornuarietis, in a man-made dam in northern Tanzania.

Marisa cornuarietis is a well known ampullarid competitor/predator of Biomphalaria glabrata in Puerto Rico. For the first time in Africa a flourishing population of Marisa has been established in a small, permanent, man-made dam at Kisangara, near Moshi, Tanzania. Prior to the release of M. cornuarietis in June 1977, this dam supported thriving populations of the pulmonate snail hosts Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Lymnaea natalensis; Bulinus tropicus and the melaniid Melanoides tuberculata were also common. Some 24 months after the establishment of Marisa the three pulmonate species had been elim

Molecular phylogenetic relationships in the aquatic snail genus Lymnaea, the intermediate host of the causative agent of fascioliasis: insights from broader taxon sampling.

Phylogenetic analyses were performed on partial mitochondrial (16S) gene sequences that included new 16S data for 23 exemplars of the freshwater pulmonate snail genus Lymnaea sensu lato and putative outgroup species. This procedure yielded relatively congruent patterns of evolutionary divergence and phylogenetic affinities, and greater resolution and support for many lineages at different levels of divergence than from a previous work based on fewer samples. It has also clarified the relationships between key taxa. Molecular differentiation was evident among genera. Lymnaeids with n=16 chromos

Identification of a novel UDP-Gal:GalNAc beta 1-4GlcNAc-R beta 1-3-galactosyltransferase in the connective tissue of the snail Lymnaea stagnalis.

Connective tissue of the freshwater pulmonate Lymnaea stagnalis was shown to contain galactosyltransferase activity capable of transferring Gal from UDP-Gal in beta 1-3 linkage to terminal GalNAc of GalNAc beta 1-4GlcNAc-R [R = beta 1-2Man alpha 1-O(CH2)8COOMe, beta 1-OMe, or alpha, beta 1-OH]. Using GalNAc beta 1-4GlcNAc beta 1-2Man alpha-1-O(CH2)8COOMe as substrate, the enzyme showed an absolute requirement for Mn2+ with an optimum Mn2+ concentration between 12.5 mM and 25 mM. The divalent cations Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2+ and Cd2+ at 12.5 mM could not substitute for Mn2+. The galactosyltransferase ac

Isolation of neurosecretory granules from the neurohaemal areas of peptidergic systems of Lymnaea stagnalis, with special reference to the ovulation hormone-producing caudodorsal cells.

Neurosecretory granules (NSG) were isolated by density-gradient centrifugation from homogenates of the intercerebral commissure (COM) and the median lip nerves (LN) of the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis. COM and LN are rich in axon terminals of the ovulation hormone-producing caudodorsal cells (CDC) and of the growth hormone-producing light green cells (LGC), respectively. Electron microscopy of COM isolates showed that a single fraction contained large numbers of NSG, which were identical to NSG of CDC axon terminals of the intact COM. High ovulation hormone activity was associated with t

Effects of chronic waterborne nickel exposure on growth, ion homeostasis, acid-base balance, and nickel uptake in the freshwater pulmonate snail, Lymnaea stagnalis.

The freshwater pulmonate snail, Lymnaea stagnalis, is the most sensitive aquatic organism tested to date for Ni. We undertook a series of experiments to investigate the underlying mechanism(s) for this observed hypersensitivity. Consistent with previous experiments, juvenile snail growth in a 21-day exposure was reduced by 48% relative to the control when exposed to 1.3 μg l(-1) Ni (EC20 less than the lowest concentration tested). Ca(2+) homeostasis was significantly disrupted by Ni exposure as demonstrated by reductions in net Ca(2+) uptake, and reductions in Ca(2+) concentrations in the hemo

Progestogen-induced alterations and their ecological relevance in different embryonic and adult behaviours of an invertebrate model species, the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis).

The presence of oral contraceptives (basically applying estrogens and/or progestogens) poses a challenge to animals living in aquatic ecosystems and reflects a rapidly growing concern worldwide. However, there is still a lack in knowledge about the behavioural effects induced by progestogens on the non-target species including molluscs. In the present study, environmental progestogen concentrations were summarised. Knowing this data, we exposed a well-established invertebrate model species, the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) to relevant equi-concentrations (1, 10, 100, and 500 ng L-1) of

Assessment of the molluscicidal impact of extracted chlorophyllin on some biochemical parameters in the nervous tissue and histological changes in Biomphalaria alexandrina and Lymnaea natalensis snails.

Biomphalaria alexandrina and Lymnaea natalensis snails are the intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis and fasciolosis. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the molluscicidal activity of chlorophyll extract as a photodynamic substance against these snails and how it affected its tissues and the biological system. Chlorophyllin was extracted from deep-frozen Moringa oleifera leaves, and then it was transformed into water-soluble chlorophyllin. The present results showed that it had a molluscicidal activity on B. alexandrina snails (LC50 17.6 mg/l; LC90 20.9 mg/l) and L. natalensis snails (

Immune responses in the aquatic gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis under short-term exposure to pharmaceuticals of concern for immune systems: Diclofenac, cyclophosphamide and cyclosporine A.

This is a pioneering study in the ecotoxicological assessment of immunotoxic effects of the three selected drugs of concern to a freshwater gastropod species. Lymnaea stagnalis was exposed in the laboratory for 3 days to three drugs used for immune systems: diclofenac (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug), cyclophosphamide (anti-cancer immunosuppressive drug) or cyclosporine A (anti-xenograft immunosuppressive drug). Exposure ranges included environmental realistic (1-10μgL-1) and therapeutic concentrations (100-1000μgL-1). At the end of exposure times, the immune parameters of individual snai

Molecular characterisation of Galba truncatula, Lymnaea neotropica and L. schirazensis from Cajamarca, Peru and their potential role in transmission of human and animal fascioliasis.

BACKGROUND: Human and animal fascioliasis is emerging in many world regions, among which Andean countries constitute the largest regional hot spot and Peru the country presenting more human endemic areas. A survey was undertaken on the lymnaeid snails inhabiting the hyperendemic area of Cajamarca, where human prevalences are the highest known among the areas presenting a "valley transmission pattern", to establish which species are present, genetically characterise their populations by comparison with other human endemic areas, and discuss which ones have transmission capacity and their potent

Tissue distribution and subcellular localization of trace metals in the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis with special reference to the role of lysosomal granules in metal sequestration.

The present study was undertaken to elucidate the cellular mechanisms, which govern metal sequestration and detoxification in gastropods. For this purpose the pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis was exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of three species of metals (Al, Zn and Cd) for 30 days and the localization and fate of these metals were followed in different tissues of the snails. The measurement of relative distribution of metals between tissues revealed that the digestive gland and kidney account for most of the accumulated metals. Al and Cd (non-essential metals) were redistribut

Fasciola hepatica and Paramphistomum daubneyi: changes in prevalences of natural infections in cattle and in Lymnaea truncatula from central France over the past 12 years.

A retrospective study was carried out over a 10- to 12-year period to analyse the changes in prevalences of natural fasciolosis and paramphistomosis among cattle and snails in central France, and to determine the causes which had induced these changes. The prevalences of natural fasciolosis in cattle increased from 1990 to 1993 (13.6% to 25.2%) and diminished afterwards up to 1999 (at 12.6%). Those of natural paramphistomosis showed a progressive increase between 1990 and 1999 (from 5.2 to 44.7%). The prevalences of natural infections and the numbers of free rediae counted in the snails (Lymna

Aptitude of Lymnaea palustris and L. stagnalis to Fasciola hepatica larval development through the infection of several successive generations of 4-mm-high snails.

Bimiracidial infections of Lymnaea palustris and Lymnaea stagnalis (shell height at exposure, 4 mm) with Fasciola hepatica were carried out during six successive snail generations to determine if prevalence and intensity of snail infection increased over time through descendants issuing from eggs laid by parents already exposed to this digenean. Controls were constituted by a French population of Galba truncatula (a single generation) infected according to the same protocol. In a first experiment performed with the F1 to F5 generations of L. palustris, the prevalence and intensity of F. hepati
