Cystoid macular edema associated with the use of latanoprost.

BACKGROUND: Cystoid macular edema is a common clinical finding following intraocular surgery. Certain medications have been associated with an increased incidence of cystoid macular edema. This article describes the clinical findings in two eyes of two patients in whom cystoid macular edema developed directly following treatment with the anti-glaucoma medication latanoprost, and assesses the possible causal relationship. CASE REPORTS: Clinical correlative and angiographic studies of two patients in a referral practice are presented. The main outcome measurement was visual acuity and fundus ex

Cystoid macular edema as the primary sign of neurosyphilis.

A 34-year-old man had a six-month history of bilateral visual loss that was secondary to cystoid macular edema, which was assumed to be secondary to neurosyphilis on the basis of cerebrospinal fluid serology, cell count, and protein. Good visual acuity was recovered with systemic corticosteroids only after they were used in combination with antitreponemal therapy. This is the first report, to the best of our knowledge, of cystoid macular edema as the primary sign of neurosyphilis documented by fluorescein angiography.

A successful treatment for aphakic cystoid macular edema.

Twenty-eight consecutive cases of aphakic cystoid macular edema in 16 patients were treated with corticosteroid drops. Enough medication was used in each occurrence to achieve intraocular pressure elevation. This increases the hydrostatic pressure on the retina thereby decreasing retinal swelling pressure and reversing the cystoid macular edema. Visual acuity improved in each instance after resolution of the cystoid macular edema.

Cystoid macular edema occurring after intracameral bimatoprost implantation.

PURPOSE: This case report aims to report the development of cystoid macular edema (CME) unilaterally following the administration of bimatoprost implant (Durysta) injections in both eyes for the treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). OBSERVATIONS: An 84-year-old female patient, previously diagnosed with POAG, underwent bimatoprost implant (Durysta) injections in both eyes, spaced one month apart. Subsequently, the patient experienced a gradual decline in visual acuity in her left eye attributed to the development of CME. The condition resolved following a treatment regimen involving

Intravitreal acetazolamide implant for pseudophakic cystoid macular edema.

BACKGROUND: Pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (PCME) is the most common cause of visual acuity deterioration after uncomplicated cataract surgery. There is no consensus regarding how to manage recurrent or refractory cases. REPORT: A 54-year-old woman complained of decreased vision and central metamorphopsia in the right eye (OD) 3 months after uneventful cataract surgery. Visual acuity was 0.3 logMAR (20/40) OD and 0.1 logMAR (20/25) OS. Reduced macular brightness was seen OD on funduscopy associated with increased macular thickness on optical coherence tomography (OCT). Pseudophakic cystoi

Fingolimod-associated macular edema: incidence, detection, and management.

Fingolimod (FTY-720), a sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor modulator, is the first US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved oral agent for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Two recent phase III clinical studies (TRANSFORMS [Trial Assessing Injectable Interferon vs FTY720 Oral in RRMS] and FREEDOMS [FTY720 Research Evaluating Effects of Daily Oral Therapy in MS]) demonstrated a significant reduction in the annualized relapse rate in patients with relapsing-remitting MS, compared to once weekly interferon β-1a and placebo. Macular edema was a prominent adverse even

Pars plana vitrectomy for aphakic cystoid macular edema.

The authors used a combined limbal and pars plana vitrectomy approach to treat 17 consecutive eyes (16 patients) with chronic aphakic cystoid macular edema associated with vitreous incarceration in the cataract wound. Criteria for surgery included: decreased visual acuity to 20/50 or worse; cystoid macular edema confirmed by fluorescein angiography; persistent edema of 6 months or longer; and visible vitreous incarceration in the limbal wound. The vitreous was successfully removed from the limbal wound in 16 of 17 eyes. Postoperatively, vision improved by two lines or more in 11 eyes (65%). Th

Anterior vitrectomy for chronic aphakic cystoid macular edema.

This report describes a series of 13 patients who underwent anterior vitrectomies for chronic aphakic cystoid macular edema (CME). All eyes had formed vitreous adherent to the intracapsular wound, vision of 20/50 or worse, and fluorescein angiographically documented CME for six months or more. Following the presentation of the results (success rate of 69%) and a discussion of this form of treatment, the beginning of a national, randomized, prospective study designed to evaluate the effectiveness of this treatment is described.
