The effect of electric field, magnetic field, and infrared ray combination to reduce HOMA-IR index and GLUT 4 in diabetic model of Mus musculus.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose level (hyperglycemia). Type 2 diabetes mellitus is mainly featured by low cell sensitivity towards insulin stimulation, caused by ectopic fat storage. Insulin resistance can be quantified from high number of HOMA-IR index and observed from glucose transporter 4 (GLUT-4) translocation on membrane of skeletal muscle cells. Combined treatment of electric field, magnetic field, and infrared ray have potential to reduce insulin resistance due to improving blood circulation and increasing intracellular Ca2+ level. The

The Effect of Electroconvulsive and Magnetic Seizure Therapy (MST) on Cortical Thickness in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Identifying ways to conduct brain stimulation that match the clinical efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) without the side effects of ECT is an important goal in schizophrenia (SCS). Magnetic seizure therapy (MST) is a potential alternative, which has shown considerable efficacy but with mild cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the clinical efficacy and cognitive side effects of ECT and MST. In addition, we also investigated the possible contribution of cortical thickness changes to treatment response. METHODS: Thirty-four confirmed schizophrenia patients

The alternating 50 Hz magnetic field depending on the hydrophobicity of the strain affects the viability, filamentation and sensitivity to drugs of Candida albicans.

In recent decades, Candida albicans have been the main etiological agent of life-threatening invasive infections, characterized by various mechanisms of resistance to commonly used antifungals. One of the strategies to fight Candida infections may be the use of an electromagnetic field. In this study, we examined the influence of the alternating magnetic field of 50 Hz on the cells of C. albicans. We checked the impact of the alternating magnetic field of 50 Hz on the viability, filamentation and sensitivity to fluconazole and amphotericin B of two, differing in hydrophobicity, strains of C. a

Magnetic Field-Driven Electrogenic Scaffold Enhances the Nerve Regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Neural conduits (NGCs) are widely used for peripheral nerve regeneration but have shown limited therapeutic effects. Electrical stimulation combined with NGCs is becoming a new treatment paradigm. Conventional electrical stimulation approaches for nerve regeneration are typically hindered by inconvenience, infection, and may cause secondary damage. METHODS: This study developed a non-contact electrical stimulation platform using a magnetic field-coupled polycaprolactone/conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/black phosphorus nerve conduit. This composite nerve conduit

Therapeutic application of light and electromagnetic fields to reduce hyper-inflammation triggered by COVID-19.

COVID-19 - related morbidity is associated with exaggerated inflammation and cytokine production in the lungs, leading to acute respiratory failure. The cellular mechanisms underlying these so-called 'cytokine storms' are regulated through the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathway and by ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species). Both light (Photobiomodulation) and magnetic fields (e.g., Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field) stimulation are noninvasive therapies known to confer anti-inflammatory effects and regulate ROS signaling pathways. Here we show that daily exposure to two 10-minute intervals of mo

Technical note: Experimental dosimetric characterization of proton pencil beam distortion in a perpendicular magnetic field of an in-beam MR scanner.

BACKGROUND: As it promises more precise and conformal radiation treatments, magnetic resonance imaging-integrated proton therapy (MRiPT) is seen as a next step in image guidance for proton therapy. The Lorentz force, which affects the course of the proton pencil beams, presents a problem for beam delivery in the presence of a magnetic field. PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of the 0.32-T perpendicular magnetic field of an MR scanner on the delivery of proton pencil beams inside an MRiPT prototype system. METHODS: An MRiPT prototype comprising of a horizontal pencil beam scanning beam li

Variable spatial magnetic field influences peripheral nerves regeneration in rats.

Generator of spatial magnetic field is one of most recent achievements among the magnetostimulators. This apparatus allows to obtain the rotating magnetic field. This new method may be more effective than other widely used techniques of magnetostimulation and magnetotherapy. We investigated the influence of alternating, spatial magnetic field on the regeneration of the crushed rat sciatic nerves. Functional and morphological evaluations were used. After crush injury of the right sciatic nerve, Wistar C rats (n = 80) were randomly divided into four groups (control and three experimental). The e

[Extracorporeal magnetotransduction therapy in juvenile Perthes' disease : A case report].

Morbus Perthes is an aseptical osteonecrosis in childhood that has great variablity in theextent, course and healing results. A spontaneous resolution is possible, which, however, mandates high patience for both the affected child and the caring parents. Regarding the lack of conservative treatment methods, a new non-invasive therapy approach using novel extracorporeal magnetotransduction therapy (EMTT) was performed on a 4-year-old patient with Perthes disease. A significant pain reduction was achieved within 6 weeks in line with MRI improvements with a total of 9 EMTT sessions. EMTT represen

Developing Antitumor Magnetic Hyperthermia: Principles, Materials and Devices.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Methods of local or loco-regional anticancer treatment are of the utmost importance because the therapeutic 'power' is applied directly to the disease site. Consequently, general toxicity is minimized. Hyperthermia, that is, a sustained increase of intratumoral temperature up to 45oC, has been investigated as a perspective treatment modality alone and/or in combination with ionizing radiation or chemotherapy. Still, the surrounding tissues can be damaged by the external heat. METHOD: Development of new materials and devices gave rise to methods of inducing hypertherm

Aptamer conjugated magnetic nanoparticles as nanosurgeons.

Magnetic nanoparticles have shown promise in the fields of targeted drug delivery, hyperthermia and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in cancer therapy. The ability of magnetic nanoparticles to undergo surface modification and the effect of external magnetic field in the dynamics of their movement make them an excellent nanoplatform for cancer destruction. Surgical removal of cancerous or unwanted cells selectively from the interior of an organ or tissue without any collateral damage is a serious problem due to the highly infiltrative nature of cancer. To address this problem in surgery, we hav

Spatiotemporally Controlled Formation and Rotation of Magnetic Nanochains In Vivo for Precise Mechanotherapy of Tumors.

Systemic cancer therapy is always accompanied with toxicity to normal tissue, which has prompted concerted efforts to develop precise treatment strategies. Herein, we firstly develop an approach that enables spatiotemporally controlled formation and rotation of magnetic nanochains in vivo, allowing for precise mechanotherapy of tumor. The nanochain comprised nanocomposites of pheophorbide-A (PP) modified iron oxide nanoparticle (IONP) and lanthanide-doped down-conversion NP (DCNP). In a permanent magnetic field, the nanocomposites would be aligned to form nanochain. Next, MnO2 NPs were subsequ

Synergistic role of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy to prevent bone loss in rats following exposure to simulated microgravity.

The purpose of the present study was to use capacitive coupling of pulsed electromagnetic field (CC-PEMF) and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAp) as a countermeasure to prevent osteoporosis induced by simulated microgravity. We used the hind-limb suspension (HLS) rat model to simulate microgravity-induced bone losses for 45 days. In order to compare the resulting changes, mineralogical (bone mineral density [BMD], calcium [Ca], and phosphorus [P]), biochemical (osteocalcin, alkaline phosphatase [ALP], and type I collagen), and histological (scanning electron microscopy) parameters were adopted.
