Asperger syndrome: a proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study of brain.

BACKGROUND: Asperger syndrome (AS; an autistic disorder) is associated with impaired social skills and obsessional/repetitive behavior. Patients with autism have significant abnormalities in the frontal lobe and frontoparietal connectivity. Nobody has examined the relationship between abnormalities in the frontal and parietal lobes and clinical symptoms in people with AS. METHODS: We used in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy to examine neuronal integrity of the medial prefrontal and parietal lobes in 14 non-learning-disabled adults with AS and 18 control subjects (of similar sex, ag

Quantitative 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy and MRI of Parkinson's disease.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and (1)H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of the substantia nigra, basal ganglia, and cerebral cortex were performed on 10 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 13 age-matched, healthy control subjects. Compared to controls, PD patients had approximately 24% lower creatine in the region of the substantia nigra and smaller volumes of the putamen (11%), globus pallidus (16%), and prefrontal cortex (6%; all P < 0.05). No other significant between-group differences were found in nine regions examined. Thus, quantitative MRI may show regional neurodegenera

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy study of glycine pathways in nonketotic hyperglycinemia.

Nonketotic hyperglycinemia is a life-threatening disorder in neonates characterized by a deficiency of the glycine cleavage system. We report on four cases of the neonatal form of the disease, which were investigated by in vitro(1)H magnetic resonance spectroscopy of blood and cerebrospinal fluid, and in vivo(1)H magnetic resonance spectroscopy of brain. The existence of glycine disposal pathways leading to an increase in lactate in fluids and creatine in fluids and brain was demonstrated. This is the first observation of elevated creatine in brain in nonketotic hyperglycinemia. A recurrent de

31Phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy in late-onset Tay-Sachs disease.

The late-onset form of GM2 gangliosidosis (Tay-Sachs disease) is an autosomal-recessive disorder with progressive neurologic disease, mainly characterized by motor neuron and spinocerebellar dysfunction. The majority of patients are of Ashkenazi Jewish origin. 31Phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the brain was performed to study the metabolic changes of a 16-year-old patient with late-onset Tay-Sachs disease who had a heterozygous Gly269-->Ser mutation in the hexosaminidase A encoding gene in compound heterozygosity with another, yet unidentified mutation. Severe changes in phosphor

Liver transplantation: current and potential applications of magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) allows the noninvasive measurement of whole organ metabolism due to the presence of the MR-sensitive nucleus phosphorus 31 in adenosine triphosphate (ATP), its precursors, and break-down products. In small animal liver transplant studies it has been used to analyze the metabolic effects of cold and warm ischemia, hypothermic reperfusion, and the relative efficacy of different organ preservation solutions. In recent large animal studies MRS has been developed to provide continuous dynamic information on ATP metabolism during graft reperfusion and the bioene

[1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy in intracranial tumors and cerebral ischemia].

Image-guided localized proton magnetic resonance can now increasingly be used with clinical 1.5T MR systems. To fuel the discussion on whether spectroscopy will become a routine modality or whether it will remain a research tool, we report on our experience with a stimulated echo sequence in 60 patients harboring intracranial tumors and 79 patients suffering from various forms of cerebral ischemia. Spectroscopy was incorporated into a routine imaging protocol, and the parameters of TR = 1500 ms, TE = 270 ms were kept constant over a 3-year period. Relative changes in the metabolite concentrati

Investigation of human mitochondrial myopathies by phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Abnormal mitochondria are an increasingly recognized cause of neuromuscular disease. We have used phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy to monitor noninvasively the metabolism of high-energy phosphates and the intracellular pH of human skeletal muscle in vivo in 12 patients with mitochondrial myopathy. At rest, an abnormality could be demonstrated in 11 of 12 patients. Ten patients had evidence of a reduced muscle energy state with at least one of the following abnormalities: low phosphorylation potential, low phosphocreatine concentration, high adenosine diphosphate concentration, or hig

Hypophosphataemic osteomalacia and myopathy: studies with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

A patient with familial adult-onset hypophosphataemia, whose myopathy was closely related to the plasma phosphate concentration, was investigated by phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P n.m.r.) in vivo of the right flexor digitorum superficialis muscle. During hypophosphataemia induced by stopping oral phosphate a significant reduction in measured muscle strength occurred, but the ratios of the intramyocellular levels of phosphocreatine (PCr), adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and inorganic phosphate (Pi) remained unchanged at rest. During exercise these levels changed, as did th
