Spectroscopic and Magnetic Studies of Co(II) Scorpionate Complexes: Is There a Halide Effect on Magnetic Anisotropy?

The observation of single-molecule magnetism in transition-metal complexes relies on the phenomenon of zero-field splitting (ZFS), which arises from the interplay of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) with ligand-field-induced symmetry lowering. Previous studies have demonstrated that the magnitude of ZFS in complexes with 3d metal ions is sometimes enhanced through coordination with heavy halide ligands (Br and I) that possess large free-atom SOC constants. In this study, we systematically probe this "heavy-atom effect" in high-spin cobalt(II)-halide complexes supported by substituted hydrotris(pyrazo

Untethered small-scale magnetic soft robot with programmable magnetization and integrated multifunctional modules.

Intelligent magnetic soft robots capable of programmable structural changes and multifunctionality modalities depend on material architectures and methods for controlling magnetization profiles. While some efforts have been made, there are still key challenges in achieving programmable magnetization profile and creating heterogeneous architectures. Here, we directly embed programmed magnetization patterns (magnetization modules) into the adhesive sticker layers to construct soft robots with programmable magnetization profiles and geometries and then integrate spatially distributed functional m

Cardiac magnetic resonance in cocaine-induced myocardial damage: cocaine, heart, and magnetic resonance.

The use of cocaine constitutes a major health problem. Cocaine use is associated with acute and chronic complications that might involve any system, the most common being the cardiovascular system. The precise incidence of cocaine-induced cardiomyopathy remains mysterious and probably underreported. Cocaine use should be considered in young patients presenting with chest pain or heart failure without other underlying risk factors. Cocaine-related cardiovascular complications can be acute or chronic and include ischemic and non-ischemic events. Frequent cocaine users have a seven-fold higher ri

Design and Analysis of a 6-DOF Magnetic Suspension Platform with an Improved Permanent Magnetic Array.

For ultra-precision, large stroke, and high start/stop acceleration, a novel 6-DOF magnetic suspension platform with a novel structure of the permanent array is proposed. The structure and the working principle of the novel platform are introduced. An accurate model of the novel structure was established to calculate the magnetic density distribution for obtaining the parameters and performance of the magnetic suspension platform. The analytical model's results were verified by the finite element method. The driving force model of the magnetic suspension platform was established based on the L

Micromagnetic Simulations of Fe and Ni Nanodot Arrays Surrounded by Magnetic or Non-Magnetic Matrices.

Combining clusters of magnetic materials with a matrix of other magnetic materials is very interesting for basic research because new, possibly technologically applicable magnetic properties or magnetization reversal processes may be found. Here we report on different arrays combining iron and nickel, for example, by surrounding circular nanodots of one material with a matrix of the other or by combining iron and nickel nanodots in air. Micromagnetic simulations were performed using the OOMMF (Object Oriented MicroMagnetic Framework). Our results show that magnetization reversal processes are

Effect of Magnet Position on Tipping and Bodily Tooth Movement in Magnetic Force-Driven Orthodontics.

The goal of our study is to launch magnetic force-driven orthodontics. This continuous study investigated the influence of magnet position on tipping and bodily tooth movement, using 3D printing technology and digital analysis. Orthodontic typodont models (TMs) for space-closure were 3D printed to mimic maxillary central incisors. Nd-Fe-B magnets were placed in the middle third (Model-M), and the cervical third (Model-C), of the tooth. TMs, before and after movement, were digitally scanned and superimposed. The 3D digital coordinates (X, Y, and Z axes), and rotations (yaw, pitch, and roll) of

Magnetic targeting and cellular uptake of polymer microcapsules simultaneously functionalized with magnetic and luminescent nanocrystals.

By using a flow channel system for modeling the bloodstream in the circulatory system and by locally creating a magnetic field gradient caused by a permanent magnet, we demonstrate specific trapping of polymer capsules simultaneously functionalized with two types of nanoparticles--magnetic and luminescent nanocrystals. In the regions where the capsules were trapped by the magnetic field, drastically increased uptake of capsules by cells has been observed. The uptake of capsules by cells could be conveniently monitored with a fluorescence microscope by the luminescence of CdTe nanocrystals that

Correlations between magnetization transfer metrics and other magnetic resonance abnormalities in multiple sclerosis.

Magnetization transfer imaging (MTI) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique that is now used in multiple sclerosis (MS) studies, and is thought to have a higher pathological specificity than conventional T2-weighted imaging. This review outlines the correlations between magnetization transfer (MT) metrics and other MRI abnormalities in the study of individual MS lesions and in the assessment of MS disease burden. MTI studies of individual MS lesions confirm the pathological heterogeneity of T2-weighted MRI abnormalities and the potential role of unenhanced T1-weighted hypointensities

Magnetic resonance imaging of rat head with a high-strength (4.7 T) magnetic field.

This study was designed to seek the appropriate scanning parameters for T1 and T2 weighted images of rat head by use of a high (4.7 T) magnetic field strength magnetic resonance imaging unit. The optimum values of variables for T1 weighted images were considered to be a time of repetition of 1,000 msec, and for T2 weighted images, 8 echoes. When the sagittal images of a healthy rat head were scanned using these optimum values, the cerebrum, cerebellum, olfactory bulb, pituitary gland, pineal gland, spinal cord, tongue, nasopharynx, nasal conchae, vermis and cerebrospinal fluid were clearly obs

Use of magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography in diagnosis of sigmoid sinus thrombosis.

Magnetic resonance angiography is an established radiologic technique which is rapidly becoming useful in imaging the head and neck. Currently, this imaging modality is important in the diagnosis of sigmoid sinus thrombosis caused by otologic disease. Since the introduction of antibiotic therapy, the percentage of deaths attributed to intracranial complications from otitic disease has decreased from 2.5 to approximately 0.25% of documented deaths. Also, the incidence of sinus thrombosis within this group has decreased, but it is still a serious and potentially lethal condition. Sinus thrombosi

[A case of cavernous angioma--usefulness of magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography in diagnosis].

We reported a case of cavernous angioma in the middle cranial fossa, which was diagnosed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). The patient was a 56-year-old female, who presented with sudden onset right-sided headache with nausea. Her neurological findings were normal. On CT scan a high density area with a surrounding thin low density area was shown in the right posterior temporal region without contrast enhancement. Cerebral angiography of the left vertebral artery revealed only a small stain at the end of the right posterior temporal artery. On T2-we

A Rapid and Uniform Magnetization Method for Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Assisted by Rotating Magnetic Fields for Microrobots.

Micro/nanorobots have garnered significant attention due to their potential applications in biomedical fields such as minimally invasive surgery, targeted drug delivery, and cell manipulation. Magnetic field actuation, as a non-invasive and highly biocompatible driving method, has become a research hotspot. However, traditional magnetic functionalization methods like magnetron sputtering suffer from complex processes, high costs, and poor biocompatibility. Meanwhile, the mixture method combining magnetic particles with photoresist is constrained by particle dispersion and molding quality. To a
